Who should young girls look up to these days?

Look up to cooking mama. Get back in the kitchen.

I really don't know. There aren't many good people out there to look up to. A lot of people would have bad influences.

There aren't really many role models for girls to look up to since, their lives have changed and instead they give out bad influences. Since all of the role models that girls used to look up to, really threw their lives away and instead turned into something that can not be explained at all. So, nobody is left to have as role models.

Does it have to be a "real" person?

The problem is that most potential role models these days are "cultural" celebrities. Like the ones you mentioned. The media is full of them. There are a few political ones, who are very good paragons. Like Malala Yousafzai who is also not too old to be not relatable and does something really impressive.

And I think it don't necessarily have to be women. You know, gender equality.

Hey, wait! Twilight's a political person now and admired by many male fans! Victory for equality!

(Maybe just kidding with Twilight, but to be honest, she's a better role model than Hannah Montana or Britney Spears.)

They should look up to there older siblings, parents, friends, and find the good in all the people they meet in there day-to day lives instead of worrying about people you'll never meet.

I was sitting around wondering who preteen girls could look up to these days. Please help me figure out.

Maybe Britanny Spe-oh.

Maybe Hannah Mont-Damnit

Maybe Amanda Byn-you've got to be kidding me.

I give up.

Please help me out here.

Hmmmm, well, it can't be us. To tell you the truth, the kids should look up to the responsible, well, at least the more responsible figures, like Obama or someone.

Depends on the girl and what her aspirations are.  While one girl might look up to some famous celebrity, another might look up to some important researcher or something of the like.  Personally, I found fictional characters(like from Star Trek) to be good role models.  B)   If that's not a decent pot of tea there are plenty of good female role models like: Nana Visitor, Tina Fey, Ellen Degeneres, Claudia Black, Rachel Brice,  Zoe Jakes, Dita Von Teese, Kat Von D, Rose McGowan, Michelle Pfeiffer, Manal al-Sharif, Sarah Chang, Gail Carriger, etc....

There's not that many people you can look up to now days, maybe when the celebrities were younger but now...

I kinda look up to Jennifer Lawrence. People call her fat and chubby, but she says that she likes the way that she looks, and is not going to change. I can respect that.

The women I can think of that I think would fit the bill are to obscure or crazy. Shirly Walker, first major female film composer. Hilary Clinton, too crazy and married to Bill. We need a girl who is cool and respectable. Too bad our society doesn't nurture that kind of person. Dang this is hard.

Tabitha St Germain, that's what I'm going with.

Why should we pick out role models for the kids? Let them do that for themselfs, did your parents tell you who you should have looked up to when you were small?

No?

Well, mine didn't at least, I found my own role models, people I could look up to and I turned out fine. I don't really see the problem here..

Okay, I understand that some of the "old role models" are not good role models anymore, but why would a kid pick like Miley Cyrus as a role model nowadays? She doesn't do anything kid related since she left Disney. :P

Well I hear a lot of people say Jennifer Lawrence is a really awesome person, so she would probably be a good role model.

People call her fat and chubby, but she says that she likes the way that she looks, and is not going to change. I can respect that.

What?!?!?! She's not even fat at all, I think she's really pretty!!!!

I honestly think that pretty much all of the Mane 6 would be good role models. What we need is some real-world Elements of Harmony. Everywhere. Because let's face it, there ain't many people these days who are kind, loyal, generous, honest AND funny.

Ponies. Preteen girls should look up to ponies. They represent all that is good and holy in life.

I'm kidding. Totally kidding. (Although ponies do make good role models. ^_^ )

Uuuummmm... This is a really hard question. Um. I personally look up to actors, and not only the actors, but most of the time, the characters they play. It's hard to look up to many actors anymore, but one of the ones I respect is Jennifer Lawrence. She's just a really nice person. I hope she doesn't go bad from the stardom like so many others before her.

We all know how they will turn out if they DON'T have a good role model to look up, don't we?

Inevitably they will turn out something like this:

chavette.jpg

Act now, before we have another generation of... chavs and chavettes.

Wow its like you took a picture of me or something. but for serious, this is way too accurate about half of the girls I know. brilliant

I can't believe nobody has said this yet, but I think little girls should look up to Lauren Faust.

220px-LaurenFaust.jpg

She created once a very sterotipical girls show, into a shows that shows strong, hard working girl ponies that are not just shopping and dating boys. She changed a whole the story of a once old brand called My Little Pony from girl prissy jane like actions, into actions that little girls can look up to and say" I'm gonna run my own business like Rarity, or I'm gonna support my family like AJ does"

She should be what girls look up to now a days.

Their parents or teachers.

Seriously. Entertainment is for entertainment and people involved in the entertainment industry shouldn't have their lives scrutinized to prove if they can or can't be good role models. The same go for characters. Let the authors tell their stories and teach children that they are supposed to behave as civilized beings, regardless of what their favorite hero or whatever does.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

Florence Nightingale

Marie Curie

Harriet Tubman

Fanny Crosby

Rosa Parks

Mother Teresa

Certainly better than all of the damn celebrities, musicians, and Disney princesses. Ugh. Why not just look up to ordinary women who did so much for their people in humble ways. Nightingale was a nurse for the British army. Tubman lead the Underground Railroad. Curie discovered many of the elements we know today.

I know, right? Honestly, good role models are few and far between now-a-days. I have a VERY huge beef with Cosmopolitan magazine, actually. Everywhere I go, this magazine is eye level to most 5/6 year olds. Most topics on the cover have "sex" somewhere in it, or at least implies it. And these girls are growing up in a world where the goal is getting the guy, and not being the best for YOURSELF first. It's all really backwards.

/sigh I'm glad I have a bunny.

What?!?!?! She's not even fat at all, I think she's really pretty!!!!

Exactly! People say that just because she's not as thin as everybody else in Hollywood. I've heard somewhere that she doesn't deserve to be the main actress for the hunger games, and I call that bullpoop. She got awards, for goodness sake!

Veering off topic here. I do think Jennifer Lawrence would be a great role model for pre-teens and stuff.

Yes, Jennifer Lawrence is a great role model, have you guys seen that interview were they asked her what diet she was on? (Because they think every celebrity is on a diet)

She replied something like this: "Diet? What's a diet? I just like to eat" xD

Wonder Woman.

2555515-wonder_woman_by_alex_ross_57.jpg

No, seriously.  There's a fascinating documentary I saw about Wonder Woman and other female heroes in media and how they reflect or impact society's views on gender and how they affect the progress of women in society today and what "girl power" really means.  Basically it's these fantasy ideals that allow young girls to believe that they can be as powerful as boys.

Here's the documentary:
