What would you say are banned arts of magic?

What would you say are banned arts of magic? Types of magic that's considered evil. 

 

Necromancy, summoning of the dead or raising of the dead. Obviously, this type of magic would be banned. 

 

Conjuration, well certain types of conjuration summoning magic, like summoning a monster from Tartarus. 

 

Mind control magic. Need I say more?

Dark magic, as a whole, seems to be something either discouraged or outlawed to normal ponies. Sombra, an evil tyrant, is the only one shown to be a master of it, and Celestia only used it in order to make a point to her student about what would happen if he was allowed to take over again. Twilight then admitted that she 'learned' it from Celestia when she used it later on in the Crystal Empire. A to-be princess who's specialty is magic, who has access to absolutely everything in the Canterlot library, including Starswirl's wing, not knowing this type of magic? Yeah, I'd say that's outlawed and probably kept secret by the princesses, as to keep unicorns from potentially getting corrupted by it.

 

Outside that, I would agree that things that deal with messing with sacred, against the laws of nature type things such as death (necromancy as you mentioned) are probably banned.

The forbidden arts:

Necromancy, the study of bringing the dead back to life.
Summoning of dark creatures, those likely to bring harm to others.
Curses, the common way of inflicting suffering on an adversary, all the way up to spells that cause mortal wounds.
émouvoir modification, or the forcible modification of another's feelings for someone's benefit. (Forced love, etc.)
Thought reading, the ability to violate the sacred privacy of one's lifespan and lay it bare in front of the world.
Thought modification, or changing one's perception of their own past.
Thought control, the power to forcibly control another body.
Time skipping, the ability to alter the course of history.

In Equestria, the list would probably expand to include those spells which could potentially harm the user in the process; not something inherently "wrong", but something extremely dangerous.

 

There are probably more, but I'm starting to lose steam. This was a good thinking exercise; I had never thought of this before.

well just thinking about it since we have no basis in show on whats would be banned other then the dark magic used by Sombra or the complete mind control used by Chrysalis my guess would be magic that cause harm and destruction at all. Necromancy would be shuned on it seems, only seen Twilight use summoning so far i think(she summoned a parasprite in the magic duel) so that might not be shunned but we dunno maybe is you summon a dragon to fight fo you that would probably be banned. theres 2 sides to most magics so it's hard to say like transformation would be tough to tell if would be banned or not

Necromancy would be banned for sure. That's a type of magic that I'd imagine is looked down by others. Mind control is another magic that I think is banned. Manipulating others for your own benefits and all that good stuff.

Ah, allow me to make a slight adjustment to this descripion. Necromancy is not just magic that is for the purpose of raising the dead. It is actually Death Magic period. Meaning that through the sacrifice of life or blood, magic can be performed of a great consequence. It just so happens most consider it to be just that of rasing the dead.

Well, modt unicorns don't seem to have have a grasp on magic beyond levitation so there might not be much need for laws as such.

I imagine the education at Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns does include ethics, to ensure it doesn't turn into a villain factory (along with a strict restriction system for the library).

Beyond the already mentioned necromancy and mind control, I would say magic that alters free will. You dot need to access a ponies mind to control them, you can take command of their body against their will. I would also say that spells, if they should exist, that are equivalent to the other 2 of the three Unforgivable Curses from the Harry Potter universe. A spell such as these that we have seen is that one in Magic Duel which Trixie intended to torture Rainbow Dash with. The other, which I doubt we'll see, would be a spell that causes death.

The idea of kind control spells are very scary actually. I'm surprised Twilight actually had a spell of it in her book. I guess that type of magic is actually aallowed because it's how she fixed everyone in Return of Harmony.

 

Also Transfiguration spells are most likely banned but.Twilight uses it multiple times.

I'm not sure whether or not it could be considered banned.  It was in Twilight's spell book, but Celestia never asked her to use a spell for reforming Discord.  This, I believe, was for good reason.

A reforming spell seems that it would end up being mind control.  This is unfair.  They should never control a pony to change to the good side even if it helps them.  This must be achieved through the pony's own free will.  I thought it was very cruel of Twilight to even think of using the spell.

Sometimes I think Twilight thinks everything can be solved with magic.  This will lead to problems xD

 

Or maybe I just like Discord too much.

Alight, alright, I'll be serious! Being a dark mage myself, I thought of a few ideas that escaped your notice:

• Magic that messes with other ponies' souls: This can be anywhere from ripping the soul out of them to simply tweaking it a bit.
• Magic that drains the user's life force: So pretty much blood magic.
• Magic that drains the life force of others: What all the cool blood mages do.
• Magic that corrupts the very essence of magic: This one is a personal favorite of mine. Basically what you do is slowly taint all the magic in the world so that anyone using any magic at all slowly becomes corrupted.
• Magic that alters reality: Well, at least until you alter reality to make altering reality perfectly legal.
• Magic that unnaturally prolongs life: This one is debatable.

Anywho to answer the question I am going Harry Potter and say curses that kill, torture, or mind control ponies is forbidden.

 

Mind ALTERING on the other hoof (C wat I didz ther :3) is disturbingly NOT forbidden as twilight had no issue going to her books to try and force discord to change. And considering he made a point to eat the pages they could of done the trick.

Spells for the sole purpose of killing would likely be outlawed. If it came to morale choice imprisonment, transfiguration, and brainwashing are still better than straight out killing.
