Eh, I think it's just okay, but then again I only really use it for text chat with friends. The best thing about I think is just that everyone has it really, a very useful internet-phone hybrid thingy I guess for those who have use for it.

I don't even use Skype except to talk to people on this site.

 

And even then, I use this site to talk to people on here more than I do Skype.

 

It's whatever to me. I only use it because some people seem to prefer it to talk

I love Skype - I can call phones with it, I can talk to my friends for hours on it, I can easily send me people stuff on it.

Skype does everything!

 

And as for security, apart from your profile information, all data is send P2P (Peer to peer) - so when you send a message to someone, rather than going to a Skype server, it goes directly to that person - no where else, just hope you don't have a virus. Same with calls and files. Status updates, profile pictures and other profile info is stored on Skype servers however.

 

I don't know what I'd do without Skype.

It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's pretty good. And free.

Free calling with or without video option, text IM as good as any included, both can be done with pretty much any number of people you wish, everything very easy to get, install and use. Good sound quality, also.

Downside definitely is relatively higher strain on the connection of the users, but with half-decent connection, it's hardly ever noticeable.

 

As for security and NSA and such... Well, I wouldn't use it for super-important talks or planning of assassination, but other than that, I don't really think it's any more insecure than majority of of programs of this kind.

 

You can also call actual phone numbers for very low costs, but haven't tried that personally.

Skype can be great, but I don't like talking to people in person, so talking to someone on a camera is just as bad and I just hate it so much.

I don't like Skype. I prefer stuff like Teamspeak or even Kik (cause pony smilies, though they aren't free.)

Skype isn't terrible, I just prefer other methods of communication. I prefer texting over calling, any day of the week, and text chat over voice chat.

It's pretty much passable for anyone looking to chat and talk to friends at any time.

 

However, it's not that reliable, as there are a lot of glitches and problems with it, so I don't fully recommend it if your planning on doing let's plays with commentary.

Skype is a great communication tool, its free and doesn't force anything on you.  currently better the that old MSN messager which well merged with skype so i guess that is relevant

Firstly, I don't understand what you mean with secretive owners, Skype is owned by Microsoft. It used to be owned by some random Swedes.

 

The program works just fine, I don't see why anyone would hate on it. It's great for text, voice and video chats though I mostly use text chats. There are a lot of other programs that works great but atm Skype is the thing everyone's using so I don't see why you'd use something else for computers. The Skype app for mobile devices is derping sometimes though, so for my phone I prefer to use kik instead (but I have skype too).

 

About security I don't really give a shit if there's some random people over at Microsoft's looking through my smexy conversations or looking at all totally-not-nsfw pictures I send to people.

It's better because it's lightweight. No need to install anything. Just keep your browser open and you're ready to go. It also has some very nice features, like screen sharing. So if you're working with vectors with someone else, it might be a good idea.

I assume you mean Google Hangouts. @@BlinkZ, I don't really understand all this hate at Google+. Google+ is great, it's just ridiculously annoying how Google is almost forcing people to use it.

Skype is definitely far from perfect and has its bugs, but for me it's best way to contact people from all around the world (yes, I am talking about forums here ^^) so I still say it's a good thing. I only wish it was more popular in Poland, I hate the fact that my polish friends stick to facebook.

Guess it's convenient, I guess I'm just a bit old fashioned since I prefer just using text and luckily skype has that but sometimes the message doesn't send right away and it kind of messes it up. When it comes to video calls, there are no complaints other then that I just prefer not to use it. So I guess overall I like skype, though I don't really use it.

Skype has its fair share of glitches and other issues, and I am not sure how safe or secure it is, but I like it for its convenience. I've added many of my forum friends to Skype so I could communicate with them in an easier and more efficient way, as it's definitely a lot quicker and easier to send messages via Skype than to send private messages over the forum.
