Spike was quite a nuisance in season 3 and has proved more bad things and less spotlight time in season 4.

Twilight doesn't treat him as a pet however. That's owlicious's job

Spike has caused two problems in Season 4, one of which he was the main person who resolved it. He contributed to the resolution of Princess Twilight Sparkle, Power Ponies, and Simple Ways.

He also has two episodes coming up this season with him as the focus, so yea lack of screentime is not going to be an issue at the end of the season.

Oh....uh, sorry. I'll edit it in.

He's just not a very strong character and seems to do everything wrong. Like, the show is about learning from mistakes and I get that but every time Spike is on screen he does stuff wrong and quite often doesn't make up for it. Besides the timberwolf episode and the supermare one, when has he actually stepped up to the plate? Season 3 He was just god awful and this season he just seems to wonder in and out of frame for comic relief or just to screw something up that the mane six fix. I personally don't like spike, but I'm just stating the reasons I don't.

Fair enough, but it doesn't help or hurt my point. I don't care if you don't like him, I understand. I don't understand why this is a thing still.

It appears to me that the pets on MLP do not talk.  Spike however was hatched from an egg when Twilight was already grown and although he is her assistant he is still very young.  The fact that he continuously tries to find his place in the world and questions his worth seems to me that he is like a young person growing up.

He messes up and he comes through.  Sounds normal to me.

As for his being a dog in Equestria girls, he couldn't be human and still hang around them because they were in high school.  I'm not sure what else they could have portrayed him as and still kept him in the story.

I shouldn't have made this poll, I'm an asshole.

Of course not. he is a sapient, thanks @Andaasonsan, being, who shares a sibling-esqe bond with Twilight.

What makes it a bit more complex is that at the same time Spike also functions as her assistant and, to a degree, servant.

So, while the two probably consider themselves to be equals, she is technically his superior.

This makes for a more interesting relationship than you usually get to see in the genre. Unfortunately, some people on the internet are bit...simplistic in their way of viewing things, hence the Spike's a pet/slave crowd.

He's just not a very strong character and seems to do everything wrong.

I only ever got that impression from season 3 Spike, especially in Spike at your Service, and I would chalk that up to lazy writing; SE 1&2 has been shown to be extremely competent.

No need. to beat yourself up, it's called a Discussion Board after all ;) .

No.

There's a clear distinction between sentient and non-sentient in MLP:FIM.

Actually I think there's not. What about Angel? He's far more sapient than a normal rabbit but he can't talk and he's conidered a pet. Same with the other pets to a lesser extent.

No, I don't view him as a pet. I've always thought of him as Twilight's assistant. Also, in a way she's his mom. I mean, he has been with her since he was hatched, right?

Maybe, but this poll was created out of frustration with the whole "Spike is a pet" thing. It was kinda asinine for me to do this over an opinion.

Almost everyone knows spike is not a pet, but in the first few episodes he is treated like a bag of potatoes.

At least now in the show he isn't slammed against the floor, only sometimes by accident.

I'm not sure...

He seemed to be more of a friend or adoptive younger brother to Twilight than an actual slave or a pet and the 'Crystal Empire' seems to reiterate this with the door of fear and again with 'Spike At Your Service' where both he and Twi are visibly distraught at him leaving as well as the fact that he was allowed the task of looking after the Mane Six's pets while they returned to the Crystal Empire to meet Miss Harshwhinny.

I REALLY want to say 'no' but, in Equestria Girls he is turned into a dog (which in the human world is a pet) which is confusing because its the exact opposite of what we've been lead to believe up until this point.

In Season 4, 'The Power Ponies' claims that he isn't a pet and more of a sidekick character-so it feels like the writers can't really make up their minds on what they want him to be.

I said I'm not sure.

The show wants me to believe that he is being well treated, like a person should be.

But it's not what I see on screen.

But it's difficult to really say because it varies from writer to writer and from episode toepisode.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

He's obviously slave labor, DUH!

I kinda see him more like Twilight's little brother really.

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.
