Rainbow Rocks Short #9 "Perfect Day For Fun"
Spinelspike replied to Allen's topic in Equestria Girls
It's very awkward to see MLP be both this generic and stereotypical. I love MLP mainly for the fact that it isn't stereotypical and has six very strong independent female characters that are both entertaining and good role models for girls watching them. I'm still sceptical about this movie. But...on the bright side, hey, at least Spike is confirmed to be back -
gaming The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Thread
Spinelspike replied to Adorkable's topic in Media Discussion
Sonic has always been my favourite video game character, and just one of my favourite fictional characters in general. Not only are his games a fun escape from reality, but the optimistic attitude of Sonic himself just inspires me to not always feel down and to have faith in myself. Ever since my childhood he has been there for me, and he still is today. I know that his track record of games hasn't been perfect in terms of reception (personally I enjoy all of them. I'm just acknowledging how the general public have received some of them), but I am still loyal to the franchise and find something to enjoy in every game, comic book, show or film to come out of it. Even though the Sonic fan base can be rude, loud, and ignorant, there is a strange sort of charm to it, and it's developed it's own very unique sense of humour. Given all of the wonderful fan works that have been made as well, I am still very glad to be part of the fandom. As for my favourite sonic game, I'd actually have to say "Sonic Heroes". I know many will disagree with me, but to this day I pride myself in defending it, as I think it's far more brilliant then people realise, and has the exact kind of things that people have been wanting in a sonic game. It technically wasn't the first sonic game I played, but it was the first one I owned. I'd be here forever if I discussed my top sonic games, but as for characters, besides sonic himself, I really like Espio, and wish he would have more to do in the recent games. Mike Pollock is by far the best and most hilarious voice actor. I know it's not perfect, but I did actually enjoy a substantial part of Sonic X. Favourite song? Live Life from Sonic and the Black Knight (also a very underrated title) I don't have any least favourites in the sonic franchise But as for Sonic Boom. Well, I'm very mixed. It really could go either way, and so far the gameplay footage hasn't done enough to make completely optimistic or pessimistic about it. I want it to do well. It'd be great if it did. But so far, while I like some of what I see, it does look a bit generic and repetitive. I know it's harking back to the classic PS2 platformers, but they are dated for a reason. Sonic made a big impact because his games were new and fresh. Yes, inspired by other gaming icons, but it had it's own unique-ness to it. If sonic wants to maintain his place in the gaming community, then he really needs a game that's fresh and original and of very high quality. If it doesn't turn out that way, then of course Sonic will get back on his feet again like he always does, but it would still de-moralise the fanbase. But all in all, I still love the blue blur and always will remain a loyal fan. -
I guess G5 will come around whenever Hasbro wants to start a completely new toy-line. But....as long as the new toy line doesn't look too drastically different to G4 and the characters remain the same, FiM could theoretically continue the same way. Even now, the toys themselves don't look exactly look their cartoon counterparts. The toy's are a little stouter, more chubby around the muzzle and just well....more chibi? But the essential look and character is still intact in the show, so even if a new style of toy line is released, as long as the characters are the same and keep the same colours and don't look too un-recognisably different to the cartoon, then the show could still carry over more or less the same into G5. Hasbro is aware of how popular the show is, so they may consider letting the show go on even if the toyline evolves somewhat. It's only a theory, and only a possibility, but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Does anyone ELSE hate the term Pegasister?
Spinelspike replied to Sweets's topic in Sugarcube Corner
Honestly I usually dislike any made up term used to describe a certain collective group of fans for something. I'm only okay with Bronies because it's short and sweet and an easy way of identifying our specific social group, though it annoys me when it is over-saturated, especially on sites dedicated to our social group. Yes, we are all Bronies here, we know, there is no longer any need to say the term while we are on here. Pegasister can be an innocent mere alteration of Brony, though really, there is no need for the gender separation, and again, it shouldn't be over saturated. -
I first saw the first few minutes of "Sweet and Elite" but had to abruptly stop watching because of an outside interference. I couldn't remember what the episode was called when I went back onto youtube, so the first full episode I ever saw was "Bridle Gossip", and despite what certain people may say about that episode, it's what got me hooked into the show and fandom.

Should Princess Cadance take in an apprentice?
Spinelspike replied to ManaMinori's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
We aren't really sure what Cadance's exact origins are, and we aren't completely sure on how strong her connection is to the crystal empire, so it would be nice to see maybe a true crystal pony become an apprentice to Cadence. I think Luna has already started to become a bit of an apprentice to the CMC, as she seems to show strong fondness and connections to the younglings of Equestria, and has already helped Scootaloo and Sweetiebelle overcome their fears and nightmares. I'm pretty sure she will end up doing the same for Apple Bloom next season, so I'm perfectly okay with the CMC becoming sort of apprentices of Luna, as children are more prone and vulnerable to insecurity and nightmares, so Luna clearly shows a stronger connection and understanding towards them. As far Twilight, she already is sort of a tutor and mentor to her friends. After all, she is the Princess of Friendship now, so it makes sense that she becomes a tutor towards her closest friends. Honestly, I'd like Spike to take a more apprentice like role, either more seriously towards Twilight, or perhaps more towards Celestia, or even Discord (to give Discord something to do I guess). His origins are mysterious, so I think he was brought to be hatched by Twilight for a reason, and that he has yet to fulfil a bigger purpose. -
that would never ever happen on a show targeted for a young girl demographic, and besides, it would be a waste of a great character and great character development. I think he does honestly appreciate friendship now, especially now he knows that there are beings out there besides the ponies that can defeat him.

I certainly hope not, at least not for the current generation. There is something so charming about the 2D animation they have now that also allows them to better execute slapstick, which just can't be replicated as well in 3D. If they must in future generations, then they must, but I wouldn't like that they do it now at all.
-
Ehhhhh, I don't have many high hopes. There was stuff to enjoy about the first one, but it just fell too far into the US high school teenage drama formula, filled with cliches that just did not mix well with mlp's characters, and this new one seems to be even more of that. I'm sorry, but I just find it cringeworthy to watch the promo clips where they all suddenly become master musicians and turn into pony hybrids through the power of rock and roll. It's just.....ehhhh..... If people are excited for it, then I have no problem with that, and despite what I say, I am probably going to watch it regardless, but like I said, my expectations aren't very high at all.

It was the PS1 for me too. So many great times. That intro screen will forever be embedded in my mind. Crash and disney license games were my childhood, and I'll love them forever. -
Unpopular Opinions Regarding the Show
Spinelspike replied to DITR's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Hmmm, it really depends here on what you would consider "unpopular opinions". For instance, I've seen some people on here already that have stated that they dislike Spike episodes, assuming that it's already 'popular' amongst the fanbase that they are all liked, whereas I personally would actually defend some Spike episodes as an unpopular opinion because I believe a large section of the fanbase is heavily against Spike episodes. The same goes with Chrysalis, and whether it is popular or not to consider her a better or weaker villain than others, so it's hard to determine whether thinking she's a great villain or not is unpopular or not. It can be hard to determine whats popular to think or not, since a heavily repeated opinion on the internet may not represent the opinion of the majority. Although, overall, I'd say that for the most part, opinions that are negative against the show tend to be the unpopular ones, because I think that as a fanbase, we do dearly love the show, and try not to be negative about it when we can.- 1,378 replies

mega thread Why did you choose your avatar/profile pic?
Spinelspike replied to ~Rule 63~ Lyeco's topic in General Discussion
Spike's my favourite character, and I felt I had opinions about him that hadn't been expressed much anywhere else, so why not? Also, I guess it just gives off the impression of someone with a lot of work and ideas (as scrolls) trying to share them with everyone else. -
In this thread, I am talking about character pairings that we have not yet seen on the show that would be interesting to explore in the new season. In the past, we have had both episodes starring all of the main characters as well as episodes focussing on just one character, but we have also had episodes that prominently feature the combination of two characters that interact frequently throughout the episode. Thus far, common pairings seem to be that of Applejack and Rarity in episodes like "Look before you sleep" and "Simple ways", and Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash in episodes like "Hurricane Fluttershy" and "May the best pet win", but we have also had quite a number of other combinations over the past 4 seasons including Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Fluttershy, Applejack and Twilight, and Spike and the CMC. Yet, there still seem to be some possible combinations that have yet to happen on the show, or at least pairings that have not been capitalised much upon as of yet. I think it's interesting to discuss these because I believe there to be characters that haven't really interacted together much, and would be great to see their relationships develop. For one, I don't think we've really ever had a proper episode focusing purely on just Rarity and Pinkie Pie together, nor have we seen Spike really interact much with anyone outside of Twilight and Rarity for a whole episode (Applejack as well I suppose, but I still think that could be developed more). All of the main cast have had at least one episode where they get to interact with the CMC, but I think Pinkie Pie has yet to have an episode with them. What about characters outside of the main cast, like Discord and Luna, or Cadence and Shining Armour? It's here where I actually have to applaud the comic series for showcasing a few of these pairings such as Spike and Celestia and Discord and the CMC, all of which have been thoroughly entertaining. But in terms of the actual show and it's future in season 5, what pairings and combinations would you like to see? Which ones have already happened but you would like to see more of? Which ones would work? Do some have more potential than others? Feel free to express you ideas to your hearts content!

I agree that it is the show's core innocence that allows it to be universally likeable and accessible, and also, like you said, G rated content from the fan community is inevitable. I agree that it is a shame that stuff like that exists, but we don't have to view it. Sometimes I understand that things such as the image you used as an example can sometimes worm their way onto our message boards when we don't really want it, and for that, I do think that we need to be stricter on where we allow images and creative works like that to be shown. They should exist certainly, because a lot of work and dedication can be shown to be put into them, and as odd as may be, there are a large number of people who like that sort of thing, and they are entitled to, but they need to find their own space to put it all together, and allow the rest of us to appreciate the show for the innocent haven it is. That being said, I will admit that I have actually enjoyed the odd fan-fiction here and there, even when it contains some, well "hardcore" content at times, but honestly, I don't actually mind that so long as the writer makes it seem natural and still purely innocent at heart in that it is happening because it feels genuine and natural for the characters, not because it exists for the sake of it existing. Now here, I am really only specifying fics that take place in the future, where all the characters have grown up a bit, so naturally, a more adult and mature atmosphere is appropriate, and for that I think it's fine, so long as the heart of the show's innocence is still identifiable somewhere, and for the few fics I've read, I'd say it is still there. I don't mind it because I could imagine those scenarios taking place had the show ever received a slightly more adult sequel series (certainly never going to happen I know, but the consistency of innocence and character present still makes it tangible all the same) But in terms of sexualising and objectifying aspects of the show in it's original context...well, yes, I think that is weird, and going a bit far in terms of degrading the amount of innocence that made the show so enjoyable in the first place. But I also accept the fact that there are those who enjoy it, and they should be allowed to make and appreciate it. So yes, I agree, the show's innocence is one of it's greatest aspects, and I'd like it to be maintained in fanwork, with exceptions being placed in a specified and confined space for only those who enjoy it, or being more appropriate when created in believable 'what if' contexts that do differ from that of the shows, and can still contain that aspect of innocence somewhere within it's core. But other more adult content certainly shouldn't be completely objected it to, because a lot of it can be genuinely well made and enjoyable, and we are entitled to ignore it if we want to.

Both Season 3 and 4 brought some big changes to the show, so now my expectations have only grown and I hope to see even more big changes for season 5. The last couple of seasons have been developing specifically Twilight, so now I would like to see some big changes amongst the other main characters: . For one, I'd like to see Rainbow Dash finally get into the Wonderbolts or at least get an alternative occupation of similar authority. . I'd like to see Apple Jack explore more aspects of her past and other family roots, and maybe let Apple Bloom develop more on her own independently. . It would be nice to see Rarity start an official chain brand or some form of partnership or line in Canterlot so that her fame will actually become widely known throughout Equestria. It would be interesting to see how she would take such sudden worldwide fame, and how willing she would still be to maintain her generosity, or whether she would actually ever get bored of high-class life. . Pinkie Pie has had some great episodes that show her ability to be mature, so honestly, just more of that please. I guess an insight into how the pound cakes are doing would be nice too. . Fluttershy....hmmm.....that's a tricky one. They had some great ideas for her in Season 4, so anything else of that ilk would be welcome I suppose. Hmm, well, seeing as the Everfree forest has been less of a threat as of late, maybe Fluttershy will finally overcome her fears and actually start to take in some of the creatures and convert them. Oh, and of course, more Fluttershy and Discord is always appreciated. . Well, Twilight has a castle now......really, they could do anything with that. It would be nice to see the Mane 6 and Spike have regular meetings and conferences to discuss the goings on of Ponyville. They'd all be proper guardians....yeah, I think the writers could have some fun with that. . Really, any development with Discord would be worth seeing. He's finally accepted the importance of friendship, so now it would be interesting to see him interact with other characters more. I don't know why, but for some reason, I kind of like the idea of Discord being either/or a partner to Celestia or a father figure to someone like Spike. . There needs to be major development to the CMC. If not at least one of them gets their cutie mark by the end of season 5, I'll be disappointed. . There needs to be major development for Spike. I don't think he was butchered in season 4, just under-used. But the few stories he had were good ones in my book, but I still think there's so much more for him. We've seen how Celestia's plans for Twilight turned out, but did she ever have any plans or intentions for Spike? I'd love to see more development between Spike and Rarity, but also I'd love to see Spike interact with independent members of the Mane 6 more in general. We rarely see him on his own with someone like Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy, so I think that there is some potential there. His dragon nature and maturity, his skills, his sense of purpose, and his potential capabilities as a weapon are all very interesting aspects of his character, and it would just be great to see more from him in general.

She is personally my favourite pony. I find her incredibly entertaining and complex, but I think the reason why some people may not like her as much is because she does seem the most obviously contradictory towards her element. Personally, I think they are wrong and that all of the Mane 6 have been equally contradictory towards their own elements, but I guess it's just more noticeable with Rarity since by nature she can be somewhat greedy and prides herself in looking glamorous, and doesn't have to sacrifice a whole lot in order to show her generosity. I guess for some, her personality contrasts too much with her element of generosity. I would write an essay arguing against them on that, but I think that is the reason why some people don't liker her as much.

DigiBrony wanting to die out of the Fandom
Spinelspike replied to notten1's topic in Sugarcube Corner
He did what he had to do, and I respect him for that. I enjoyed his analysis, and it has done it's duty by both entertaining fans, but also inspiring others to take his place as MLP analysts. It may be sad that he is departing, but let us not forget that there are still many other great mlp analysts out there that we can watch instead, many of them having been inspired or influenced by digibrony. -
Most likely because: 1) It seems to be the best access point to all other significant areas in Equestria. A train ride can take you from Ponyville to both Canterlot, Rainbow Falls, and the Crystal Empire. A balloon ride takes you to Cloudsdale, and the Everfree forest is on Ponyville's doorstep. 2) It seems to be an area with a seemingly equal amount of all different pony races. It seems to be a sort of 1:1:1 ratio of earth ponies, pegasuses, and unicorns, so I guess Celestia wanted Twilight to have a variety of different kinds of ponies as friends. It also seems to be a very friendly and community driven environment which is ideal for Twilight's studies into friendship.
