Ok, so this may seem a little nerdy-I mean eggheadish, but I personally love the vocab that is used on MLP. The first time I noticed was when I was watching "A Bird in the Hoof" and Princess Celestia commented on the pheonix cycle as being melodramatic. I was a little taken aback that a word like melodramatic would be used. Later I was listening to the Flim-Flam brother's song and I saw that someone in the comments mentioned how they use the word nonpareil. That was even more amazing to me because I actually had to look it up. It's a strange day when your outsmarted by a cartoon show. So now I'm on the hunt for the best words used in the show, and I wondered what other people have found.

They certainly have an interesting intermingling of intriguingly incongruous vocation that remains perfectly inconspicuous despite its intrinsic infantile aim of audience.

The balance between complete word simplicity and the choice selection of meaty words always tickles the mind..

Well, I haven't noticed anything like that in my first few watch throughs of the series, though it does give me something to look for on my next pass. Then again, you can always count on Pinkie to have an interesting vocabulary.

and Rarity dropped a "Et tu, Brutus?" reference on us this weekend. Pretty smart dialogue for a show originally designed for 5-10 year olds.

You usually don't hear that outside of Shakespeare... And anything higher than TV-Y or older than that... Sad part is that I can't remember where exactly...

I'm surprised they brought up Tartarus, for that matter. It probably would've been easier to have her refer to it as 'the underworld' or 'the other side' or something.

...though can you say 'underworld' on children's cartoon show, though?

Kids has no idea what Tartarus is. (Unless they prefer Mythology over Comic) The very first thing popped up in my mind after reading underworld is "Place where dead lives".

Tartarus is a mythological term, less kid should know what it means when compared to The underworld or something. :)

Please don't be alarmed with me changing names often, I did it for roleplaying purpose.

I do like how the show uses proper English and doesn't feel the need to dumb things down for kids. When I'm forced watch the last bit of Strawberry Shortcake before MLP airs, it feels like they're talking down to kids, like they need to talk slower and simpler. MLP doesn't do that because they understand that kids arn't stupid and can understand speech normal dialogue. And even the references that kids might not get (Tartarus, Et tu, Brutus?) kids would probably just look up online. I remember when I was 5-10, if I didn't get something from I show I liked I'd look it up online.

Crap. The clip isn't on YouTube, so I have to supply the transcript:

King George: It had to rhyme. Do not question the King's grammar!

From Veggie Tales: King George and the Ducky.

Someone put that clip on YouTube already! I need to call upon that clip on demand.

Crap, somepony else likes Veggie Tales. Loved that stuff when i was little.

I love the show's vocabulary. I was expecting terrible dialogue when watching it, instead my brain exploded with awesome. I was surprised at how Twilight pronounced "Tartarus", is her emphasis correct? Or have I been reading wrong my entire life?

I loved that quote.

One thing that gives this show such a great following is the fact they do not dumb it down. Children are either are going to hop on or they will stay dumb.... That may sound extreme, but older shows never used to play as if children were complete idiots.

It's like Disney (The man not the company) said "You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway"

It's the truth. Heck, I'm 24, and I still haven't grown up inside. Granted, I don't like half the shows on Disney anymore, but tht's beside the point.

There are plenty of great classical references in FiM. Icarus, John Henry, Shakespeare, accurate Dragon mythology. I'm not sure, but Twilight and the elements could be slightly inspired by the Arthur legend.

The language of the show is great. Why dumb it down? This way it is both entertaining and educational. Now thanks to Fluttershy, I know more about fashion.

The examples above remind me of how SpongeBob was like. There were a lot of dialogue that made me stratch mah head when I was a kid. The best example I can remember is when Patrick says "The inner macinations of my mind are an enigma *cuts to spilled milk*). It took me 7 years to finally figure out what that meant

What do you exactly mean by the language? Like the terminology replaced to represent the pony community... Or do you mean the their vocabulary skill in general. Don't feel bad if you are "outsmarted" by the show, it just gives you a heads up that you should try harder, no shame in that!

I'm not sure if this counts, but other than the examples of nonpareil given, Luna's Royal Canterlot Speech caught me off-guard. Apparently, real royals in the past DID used to address themselves using the second-person to represent their countries. I had no idea and was extremely impressed that this much detail to history was given on a children's show.

Thank you for pointing out the canterlot speech being compared to the past, as a archaeologist i found that bit funny

Yeah, I was pretty surprised with Fluttershys knowledge (and questionable taste in it as well) in fashion, and completely compelled to impersonate Rarity s reaction at the same time of that scene. I mean, god, Fluttershy REALLY was putting Rarity in a bind in that whole episode and her want for haute couture (higher class of custom sewn dress), and ending up with a mishap of a finished product that she micromanaged sure did back fire on her parade though...I mean, will the Egg nest hair-dress work in the future? maybe, but is considerably in poor taste for my opinion and standards...as well as Rarity s

But we do know she has potential to be an modiste, as well as being an accomplished seamstress.
