Did you see Princess Twilight Sparkle coming?

(I know this is a controversial topic here, but i think that i can trust this forum, that we can talk about it with respect for each other. Just because you disagree with anothers opinion, dosen't mean that you're a better person)

Yeah, what the title pretty much says. I am not talking about if she deserved it, if she ruined the show, if she is a different character, or all this other stuff, because i am sick and tired of it. I would rather ask the guys, who watched previous seasons, if they actually saw this coming?

I actually kind of did. Maybe not from a story perspective, but from some other symbolic stuff. When i watched the first episode, i asked myself "why is she the only with a "big crown thingy?"" When it went on to Cutie Mark Chronicles, where Twilight said how she pretty much went rampage with her magic and that Celestia said that she has the most raw magical abilities she had ever seen, i thought to myself "watch out guys. She's gonna turn into an Alicorn one day."

When MMC came around the corner and the pics of her wings where shown, i thought to myself "i am not surprised one bit." I am probably one of the few guys at january 28th 2013, who remained calm as buck.

I wouldn't say that i saw it 100% coming, but atleast 85%.

So, what about you guys? Did you see it coming or not?

This isn't something I have thought about myself. The first time I had heard of the notion of Twilight becoming a princess was shortly after season 3 began. At the time there was a certain post that made claim that Twilight was planned to become an alicorn princess by the end of the season. At the time many thought poster was just troll, but eventually we learned that it indeed was to be true.

I was expecting her to be one. since a lot of talk was around her becoming one. honestly I thought it was gonna be at the end of MLP FIM... or maybe around there...but I didn't expect it at all when she became a princess at the end of season 3

I can't honestly say I was expecting it to happen, because the truth is the thought never even occurred to me until it actually did happen. But as @ mentioned, when it did I thought "that would have made a great series finale idea".

On the other hand, I wasn't really surprised by it either. Royal Wedding introduced us to Cadence, so the whole "Luna/Celestia are only Alicorns" thing wasn't a thing anymore. And if there was going to be another Alicorn Princess, the series protagonist was a logical choice.

I honestly wasn't expecting it at all; at least I wasn't until the debut of season 3. While it was kinda obvious she was destined for greatness; it didn't dawn upon that the possibility of alicorn-ship was there.

And no; that commercial blatantly showing her wings doesn't count. :P

Eh, it got spoiled for me.  Back when I was starting season 3, I just happened to catch glimpse of an MLP toy commercial showing an animated Twilight as an alicorn.

I didn't really flip out about it, though, and actually thought it was a good thing. However, that was before I knew just how much less I would end up liking Twilight after it happened.

Yes but not in the season 3 finale and I certainly didn't see it being handled so poorly with a rushed episode that made no fragging sense. What is done is done though it pissed me off to no end but I eventually became neutral and am still in wait and see mode but it is probably going to take a while before I am completely sold on it, that is if I ever get completely sold on it.

Not really.  I didn't see the singularity of the "big crown thingy" as that much significant on Twilight's part (for one thing, it represents the Element of Magic, which is the most important element in itself and therefore was not necessarily tailored toward Twilight).  And of course, powerful magic is just powerful magic.

Also, I think it is helpful if we distinguish between becoming a princess and becoming an alicorn.  It is not immediately apparent that all alicorns are royalty (although it is empirically so), and if Prince Blueblood is any indication, the converse is plainly false (unless only females can be royalty in the fullest sense).  (It is also useful to note that Cadence was originally supposed to be only a unicorn until Hasbro decided that her character needed to sell more toys.)  So maybe the "big crown thingy" might have been a foreshadowing of Twilight becoming a princess, but not necessarily an alicorn.  I sometimes think that the backlash against the change might have been blunted a bit if she became only one of the two, but not both.

To be fair, it's been implied that season 3 was going to be the last season, but you know, still popular = more money  :P

Well, yes, I expected something big was going to happen with Twily, but not that soon to be honest

No I did not see this coming, there was just no reason for it, it was just out of the blue and was pretty much a pointless character (in the sense it changed nothing).

it was kinda obvious... she was is the protege of Celestia.... and she did a lot of things for Celestia.... weather it be saving Equestria or smaller things.... there is also a few other reasons I can't think of off the top of my head

I still remember the day the fandom went bat shit crazy over that.... people leaving the fandom, people in raged, people accepting what happened, and then there were those like myself who saw it coming

Same here, I thought she would have become an alicorn in (one of) the last episode(s) of the show.

Yeah, I've seen it coming since the beginning of the show. It was a bit obvious that her friendship lessons were leading to her accession. It was her destiny, or what would happen at the final act of her story in the show. Kind of how everyone expects Rainbow Dash to become a Wonderbolt.

As others are saying, yeah. I was sorta surprised they did it on the season 3 finale. (I say sorta because I was super into spoilers and it was already confirmed way back in the beginning of season 3).

I never thought that Twilight would become an alicorn. I knew from the start Celestia had something special in mind for her, but I never knew she would become a legit princess.

When I saw the spoilers for the season finale, I didn't freak out like the rest of the fandom did. I was like "She's a princess now? Eh, whatever".

I feel as though from the very inception of the series, Twilight was always destined to become "something more". At least that's the vibe I got; she has had a special connection with Princess Celestia since before she came to Ponyville, and when compared to the other five of the Mane 6, she's almost always been far more level-headed and calm, allowing her to be the de-facto "leader: of the group.

I can't say that I "knew" she was going to be a princess, but all the evidence has always been pointing in that general direction if you think about it.

I didnt see it coming but in retrospect, I probably should have. Let's see the evidence:

  1. Her friends treat her like a queen.
  2. She usually knows everything with her 'all knowing wisdom'.
  3. Her cutie mark is a star which would fit perfectly with Celestia and her sun and Luna with her moon.
  4. Her element of harmony is A FREAKING CROWN!!!!!!

I don't know how I didn't see it when I watched the series. I bet if the idea was planted before, though, I would believe it until the end of time.

I can say I didn't see Twilight becoming a princess coming. When it was first hinted at in promotional material before the ultimate reveal, I was actually dreading it because of the sheer number of "Twilight-becomes-an-alicorn-princess" stories that were written long before Season 2 even ended. Now I don't have as much of an issue with it, it's just that I can't remember seeing any potential build-up or foreshadowing besides Twilight calling her Element a "Big crown thingy" in anger.

Not really but in retrospect I am surprised that I didn't.

For starters Twilight's special talent is magic and was the strongest magical unicorn since Star Swirl the Bearded which already puts her on a whole other level

Then the show had built her up as the personal student of Princess Celestia the ruler of Equestria for over a thousand years which also puts her on a level most ponies wouldn't be on.

There is also Winter Wrap Up where Twilight ended up getting the job to organize the tasks of Ponyville to clear up winter putting ehr in a position of power that foreshadowed her becoming a princess.

Then there is the fact that Twilight was the element of magic which was the strongest element of harmony and was a tiara which also helped foreshadow her inevitable coronation.

There also is the Cutie Mark Chronicles episode where she went into the avatar state and hatched Spike and made him grow huge in a sheer displace of powerful magic that ended up getting her accepted into Celestia's prestigious magical academy.  Personally after seeing what Twilight was capable of even as a filly I like to believe that because of that Celestia saw the potential of Twilight to become a princess and eventually groomed her to become one.

Then there was the Crystal Empire where Celestia and Luna discussed the next level of Twilight's studies and how like Celestia and Luna had their cutie marks behind them during the speech Twilight also had her cutie mark behind her as well as the subtle foreshadowing of Star Swirl's unfinished spell during the episode.

I didn't see it coming necessary, but I'm really glad it happened. I always felt that something was coming, but I didn't know what it was. Twilight Sparkle and her friends are on a path of continual growth, and Twilight reached a stage in her spiritual evolution in which her inner essence transformed her into an alicorn.

I've always felt this was very relatable, from a variety of different points of view. You could view it as an allegory for various things in our lives, such as adulthood. Not legal adulthood, but the point at which one has reached a higher state of wisdom. Or, from a more spiritual perspective, one could view it as an example of the overall notion of spiritual growth and development: when we, as humans reach a higher point of spiritual growth, we may turn into something different as well, whether or not it includes any physical changes.
