I think his crush will subside, but their friendship will continue to grow. As my feelings toward some of my friends appear stronger that many romantic relationships I am aware of, I think 'getting over it' may be the wrong way to phrase it.

Spike's crush on Rarity has been shown to mellow out over the course of the show, and if I recall correctly, he also got a little weird with Applejewel.

 

That's because both Rarity and Applejewel are related to gemstones. I think Spike doesn't really have a crush on Rarity - he has a crush on gemstones, and any sufficiently pretty lady who provides him access to them or reminds him of them will likely be a subject of his affections.

 

It just so happens that Rarity is his most intimate and flirtatious connection to them, so she enjoys the affections of a prepubescent boy for the time being. =/

 

I don't know about within the span of the show, but theoretically, once Spike is old enough he'll likely get over his kiddy crush.

That's a really good observation, I can't believe I never thought of that. I definitely think he'll get over it now. Spike hasn't hit puberty yet so he doesn't really know what lust or romantic love for another person is. Since he's projecting his love of gems onto Rarity, he'll get over it just as soon as he starts to feel real crushy feelings for someone he is actually attracted to. That person will probably be a dragon since so far in this universe it seems that the characters mate exclusively within their own species.

 

Edit: I don't know if he'll get over her within the course of the show though, since the characters don't seem to age.

Well, his crush has been a lot less obvious than during the first few sessons. Especially in Simple Ways last season, he took it like a champ when Rarity was talking about Trenderhoof.

 

But I want an episode where Prince Blueblood and Spike compete for Rarity's affection before anything else.
