What i mean is they had some spiritual feeling which i liked, the atmosphere not just hype or general ooze but just generally made its way of atmospheric experience, just relaxing, looking at the roof and it just emerges well.

Like each individual of era, music transcended and was able to change over time with every new emergence of new talent. Some succeded and others vanished into obscurity, but the 70s, 80s, and 90s are still popular to this day.

When it comes to the popular mainstream music, yes I prefer older music.

 

There is plenty of music the comes out now days that I love, though. It's just not "mainstream".

 

I don't think music in general is any worse or better than it used to be, but I don't like modern mainstream stuff (most of the time. Up Town Funk is an awesome song)

For the most part yeah. 70s' were the start of heavy music, the pinnacle of music evolution, blending the dark atmospheres and emotions of blues, the speed of classical and the complexity of jazz, through the filter of Rock n' roll, producing an unrivaled live experience.

Yes, I think that those decades were the greatest for music, even if I think that the 2000's has some great music if you search hard enough. The 80's  has some of the greatest Thrash/Speed/Heavy Metal music of all time and Extreme Metal was just starting up and in the 90's Extreme Metal was at it's best while Thrash Metal was not at it's greatest shape for the bands that helped the genre in the 80's.

If you know what i play in my room, you would know that i adore the past, especially the 70s and 80s.

 

My favorite genre is progressive rock and there are is not a wide variety of bands, that play this genre anymore. In the 70s and 80s, you had Rush, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, etc.

 

These days, it's not about what which music sells good and more about what body sells good.

I like music from the 60s and 70s the best. I like music mostly for instrumentation, and the 60s and 70s were the best with all of the brass/saxophone sections, hammond organ, strings, etc. Plus, all of that British Folk revival, Progressive Rock, Motown... Those two decades were the best.

 

The 80s went and ruined it all with synthesizers, drum machines, and overall cheesiness. Even 80s songs without synthesizers/drum machines still don't sound right. The 'feel' of the music that decade just wasn't right. I do not like.

 

The 90s..um... I can't name many songs or artists from that decade. It was "my childhood" technically, but the decade just wasn't memorable. I listen to MUCH more music from the 00s than I do the 90s.

 

So, as far as non-classical music goes, my favorite decades are the 60s/70s, with the 80s being abysmal, the 90s forgettable, the 00s very good in spots (not so good in others), and the 10s, I don't know yet. I'd definitely put the 00s before the 80s and 90s.

There were some pretty good bands and songs from every era, but also some bad ones.  In my honest opinion, the music industry hasn't changed at all.  Popular taste is what dictates what'll fail and what'll succeed, regardless of whether or not they're good.
 
But I can't deny that I wish I lived in the same era when this song played on the radio XP

My absolutely favourite decade in music has to be the 1980s when electronic instruments grew up, became quite powerful and then increasingly affordable, but before the temptation of music based on a few looped patterns wasn't all over the place yet, and when songwriting and pop arrangement were still common for synthesiser-based music. Also, over-the-top campy hair metal.

 

Then come the 1970s and — surprise — the 1960s. At a bit of distance, the 1990s follow. In fact, I'm almost just as likely to listen to something from the 1950s.

A lot of my favorite music came about in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. From the 70s, I enjoy old school progressive rock like the music of Rush. Some of my favorite classic rock from Led Zeppelin and The Who came out of the 70s. From the 80s, I enjoy some early alternative rock like They Might Be Giants, Jane's Addiction, and R.E.M. Metallica and early Iron Maiden are really the only metal that I care about, and they both happened to come out of the 80s. As for the 90s, I can't get enough of the grunge explosion, the alternative rock of U2, and the more experimental rock of Radiohead.

I would say the late 80's early 90's had the best music out of these particular eras, mostly because of the birth of aggro-tech during that time. I personally think though that modern music is better. By that I mean the metal and aggro-tech genres.

I don't listen to a lot of music from the 70s, more so from the 80s and 90s. I don't really think one decade was better in one sense or another, I'd say they all had their ups and downs across genres.

I don't. Generally speaking I prefer music from the last fifteen years and current stuff most often. Most of what past decades did I feel is done much better now, or at the very least it's the same quality but much more widespread.

 

Not that I can't find music I like from any era but almost none of it will ever end up in my favorites.

I think it's incredibly ignorant to say that music from the past decades was the best. Sure nowadays music you hear on the radio is mostly crap, but honestly if you just take the time to dig up a little, you'll find good music.

 

I was convinced for a while that no rapper nowadays could top The Notorious B.I.G, Gang Starr, Tupac, DJ Quik... And then I listened to the "good kid, m.A.A.d city" album from Kendrick Lamar. And it's one of the best rap albums I've ever listened to.

 

It's fine to like music from the 70s, 80s or 90s, I too listen to some songs from those times, but it is just wrong to say music has gotten worse, because it hasn't. There are so many artists able to share their songs with the internet now, YouTube is crawling under channels that share music almost daily, you've got SoundCloud, 8tracks, Bandcamp... I honestly hardly believe you cannot find a single song that suits your musical tastes in here.

 

tl;dr Music from the 70s, 80s or 90s wasn't the best. You perhaps simply prefer that kind of music over today's music, but take the time to seek some good songs and you'll find, I'm sure of it.

To me, no. There's no scientific answer to what music is better, it's all subjective. I think what you grow up with has a major effect on your taste in music.

I like music from all different periods, There is tons of good music today, always has been. Just got to look past the surface. I find myself loving 80's stuff quite a bit.

I like pretty much everything I didn't grow up with. I'll take anything from the turn of the (20th) century all the way up to about the mid 1960s. After that it degenerated too much into styles I don't care for (namely anything Rock, Metal or Rap). Granted, there are always a few exceptions, and I can think of a few things that I do like from the '70s and '80s, but overall, these decades aren't my era in music.
