Which one would you prefer? Which one do you feel will help you in the long run? Any advanced users here? Tell me what you think, PC, MAC, or Linux.

I would prefer to dualboot between Windows and Linux. However, if you do go Linux, I would recommend trying out Linux Mint (with the Cinnamon desktop environment). Unfortunately, you are very likely to still need Windows depending on what you want to do with your computer, but dualbooting is worth it for now, and Linux is slowly improving. I don't have enough experience with OS X to say wheater or not I'd actually recommend it.

Linux all the way. OSX is nice, but only when running on non-Apple hardware.

Windows:

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Compatible with 90% of software and games
  • Very stable

Cons:

  • Looks like shit
  • Software, including OS, can be expensive
  • Malware if not careful

OS X:

Pros:

  • Beautiful UI and animations
  • Lots of great software for free and in general
  • Very stable
  • Very secure
  • Fast

Cons:

  • Expensive as balls
  • Good, but not great compatibility
  • VERY VERY EXPENSIVE!!

Linux:

Pros:

  • Geek status
  • Can look slick and beautiful
  • Extremely customizable
  • Fast
  • And the list goes on( see cons )

Cons:

  • Has the compatibility of a rock
  • Has many great features, but 90% of users can't / don't / has no reason to use
  • Over rated( because, as stated, most of which what makes Linux stand out, user don't ever use or simply can't use. )
  • Can be difficult to use if new
  • Can halt / freeze / crash / panic / die / BSOD-ish if not used correctly

Just my humble opinion

Im a big Linux guy. Where I think Linux excels as a desktop is in its customizability. There isnt one desktop to rule them all, each offers a different taste on what they think a desktop should be. Its cool looking and trying all the different distros and seeing what their opinion is. Theres also the package manager component in a lot of distros, which is basically like an app store filled with nothing but free software you can download from a secure source. Hundreds of thousands of developer libraries and applications at your fingertips.

At any rate, thats why I like it. That and there are some really awesome pieces of software without a windows or mac client I like using.

Even though I use a Mac right now, I still prefer Windows. I only own a Mac cause I needed to buy one for school.

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro and I really like both of them.  I started out using Windows but I never really liked it so I made the switch and haven't looked back since.

"[enter pc magazine here] RECOMMENDS WINDOWS"

I swear, if I got a dime every time I saw that ^

I'll take windows any day. First reason, I'm against all things Apple. Sure, it looks kinda cool, but in the end, it's just a company trying to milk more money out of the next iPhone.

Linux is okay, but it's got a lot of problems. I tried it out for a good week or so, but I got tired of it really quickly. There were problems with x86 and whatnot; UGH, it was all over the place.

I prefer windows, because its compatible with the most games. Also, many people use windows. Linux deserves a shoutout too. Linux is a fast growing and popular OS with programmers. Its also very customisible and have many distros to choose from, but windows is easier, but i've used all 3

1. windows

2. linux

3.mac

Between Windows and OSX, I prefer the latter. OSX has been much more user-friendly, stable, and all-around more enjoyable to use. The only real downsides are cost and lack of compatibility with games, but considering many older games have issues on modern Windows, that's a wash for me.

As for Linux, it's something I never really used, but as customization is never a big selling-point with me and just adds to the over complication of things, I'm in no rush to try it.

Linux.

The compatibility/alternatives for Windows-based apps is getting a LOT better (Steam for Linux, LibreOffice, etc), as well as Microsoft's growing support for Linux (as of November, they are now a Platinum member of the Linux Foundation, something that would be unheard of 15 years ago), but some things aren't supported still. For example, Overwatch doesn't run on Linux or on the WINE Windows compatibility layer due to DirectX 12.

So therefore, I'll use Windows until it gets somewhat near Windows-level of compatibility.

WINE is never going to be a permanent solution. It will always be behind. The real solution is to kill DirectX and replace it with a universal API that works on Windows, OSX, and Linux.

Indeed. Isn't there something for that now? Vulkan, or something like that?

Considering I use it for productivity and in general - Mac. I never got my head round Linux due to it's complexity & I only use Windows when I'm gaming. Which is pretty much rare now.

My main OS is Windows. Everything exists for Windows, it's easy to customize if you know what you're doing, you can change some pretty fundamental stuff through the registry, and all in all it just works smoothly, occasional crashes notwithstanding.

I like Linux a lot because you can do pretty much anything with it. The terminal is amazing and I used it almost exclusively when I worked with it despite the fact it has a regular file browser as well. I love that it runs on pretty much anything and that it doesn't have the overhead that can make Windows slow. For advanced stuff I think Linux is the most powerful, simply because the OS doesn't restrict you if you use 'sudo', while Administrator mode in Windows still has a number of restrictions.

Lastly, MacOS. I used to like it, because my very first computer, which I got when I was 7, was an old Mac. A Performa 630 or something like it. In its entire existence, it crashed once, and never worked again afterwards. In its defense, that was because I did the equivalent (I suspect) of removing system32 on Windows. Nowadays, I just don't like it. If you're a basic user who doesn't really want much, or who does graphical work or something, then MacOS might be good for you. It's basic usage has been made extremely simplistic, which I heavily dislike but which some people might find desirable. I don't like how closed the system is to the user, because it means you cannot change certain files without a lot of difficulty, although this does give it a lot of security. From what I've seen and heard, it connects well with other Apple devices, so if you have a lot of those maybe this is the OS for you.

Bottom line, I'd pick Windows or Linux and leave Apple stuff well alone.

Stuck with windows and their clunky ugly software indefinetly cause I play games fairly regularly (most software works on linux for me, but not all of it, namely most my games)

really like MacOS, but the main problem with it is that I'd need to learn to use the US layout keyboard, as I'm more used to the UK layout
(like I can buy a used mac, I can't be arsed having to relearn how to type all special symbols and shit like that)

I also like linux (my favorite distros being Elementary OS, and xubuntu),
it's so much more slick and reliable than windows, and even mac,
while it's so customizable, you can make it do and look like anything, you can make it look like windows 7 or mac, or if you really enjoy pain you can make it look like windows 10

also, forgot some linux distros can be really great for beginner use

Out of these I generally prefer Linux. I feel the customizability is easily the best of any OS and you have the most choices when it comes to distros, DEs and whatnot. Plus most Linux distros I’ve used (including Mint, my personal favorite) tend to feel less bloated and more polished than Windows, and not to mention I like the concept of open source software in general. Only problem is even with compatibility getting better I still have to use Windows for my animation software and certain games.
