Just curious, if you're going for a retro effect, why aren't you limiting your palette to a specific retro console's gamut? It'll surprisingly give a much better retro effect that way. Some recommen

Well Oryx, I'm curious to see if you have done any ponies in this style to start with. 8x8 is pretty difficult to work with. The smallest pony I ever sprited was 16x16.

The Amstrad CPC has a beautiful palette, despite only having 27 colors:

A lot of pixel artists love the C64's palette as well; I'm not as huge of a fan of it, but it's certainly recognizeable:

And, finally, while it's a terrible palette, it's very retro and simplistic: the ZX Spectrum.

Instead of my OC could you just do Red as a pony? Just look at the pony in my avatar.

 

EDIT:

ok never mind I don't want Red as a Pony I want my OC Flare Blitz.

If you have a flying pegasus sprite then the flames could be trailing behind him.
