If You Could Go Back In Time Where Would You Go?

If you could travel back to any time period in human history (as yourself) which would you choose? I went to a community junkyard looking for parts for my car. And i found a ton of awesome 1950's style appliances. They were almost mint. You know those huge refrigerators and ovens they had back then. It got me thinking about the 50's for some reason. Every thing was dipped in chrome and everyone wore a suit .. even when relaxing at home. It got me thinking "hmm i'd love to see the '50's" but then i realized.. I'd probably be arrested and killed. Firstly because of my sexual orientation ... I've never found myself to be attracted to men.. Second .. not exactly sure my political beliefs would fly in 1950's America heh.. Third, sad to say but racially i'd be an oddity. Not sure how many African-American/Japanese/Korean people were around then. I think that's something we don't like to acknowledge anymore. Love the Cartoons from the Era but there is no denying that there are racist elements to them. Just watch the 1940's Bug Bunny cartoons. I actually have relatives living in Canada who fled Japanese internment.

I've been day dreaming all day long about various time periods i'd like to see. My mom joked that I wouldn't like the 70's because there was no internet and the clothes looked awful.

Most people I ask this question to seem to want to go to WWII and actually see it. One person said they'd want to go to Rome during its Height to see a real Gladiator fight. That'd be cool too.

So when and where would you go?

I want to fight in the American Revolution, and show those redcoats whose boss! Plus, I would want to talk to Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Plus, I could radically change America in the present from that time...

Can't go to the future and can't go before human history? Not going anywhere then. When I look back on human history, except on the topic of science and technology, I can only feel disgust. From a social perspective, we've been nothing but an abomination to ourselves. In a world where you're in constant danger of disease, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes... The fact is that despite all of that put together, we still manage to be the bigger threat to ourselves both as individuals and as a species and for me, that's quite the embarrassment. I'm convinced that this insanity is not far from extinction; it's only a question of who goes down with the ship.

If I could go back in time, I would back to 2002. To see basically how the whole year advances, I think it would be really good to see my favorite shows and movies in that time period. Especially, Spider-Man the Movie.

Frankly I like the internet,  flush toilets and Burger Kings....so I'd just find a way to abuse my time travel to make the most money possible via gambling/stock market,  go back a few weeks,  get enough cash to never have to work again and continue to enjoy my Burger Kings, Flush Toilets, and internet.

I like now. I don't know what will happen in the future - and I like the internet too much to go back to the past. I would prefer to just stay here.

As cool as it might be to think of going to back to a time period before I was born, if I really had the opportunity to go back, I would instead divert my attention to finding a way to make this work so I could change my life. Because where it is, and where it is headed is not so happy. I would be a fool to miss an opportunity to change it all.

Also, as much as we like to glorify past times, I don't think we should. As you said, the 50s were messed up. Now is messed up in several ways as well, but at least we've made some progress. Or in our own society, that is...

Still, I'd love to see past time periods. But I wouldn't want to actually be there, because it could be very dangerous. Especially going back really far into the past like BCE times where everything would be completely foreign, and the people quite a bit more savage. I'd just love to see all of the great Greek and Roman architectural structures before they were messed up. Of course, I'd also love to see history before my own eyes, as opposed to how we have it now where it's just pieced together reports and archaeology.

My inner GLaDoS is telling me to go back in time and test the grandfather paradox.

and other than that... I suppose there really is no time like the present! I don't think I would like to visit anywhere before the age of reason and the 1800s,1900s weren't that great either. The only other thing I can think of is going back to the Jurrasic period and riding / taming a Brachiosaurus.

Although on second thought... here's an idea. I would go back to the 1700's and introduce a highly efficient steam engine and create a steampunk future in England!

I'm thinking either ancient Rome, or Feudal Japan. Ancient Rome so I could see them at the height of their power and to see a Gladiator game. Feudal Japan because I've always been interested in Japanese culture and the Samurai. I would like to see the ancient Samurai, villages and cities before America started trading with them. There are other places I would like to go if I could travel back in time, but Rome and Japan are the two I would most like to visit.

I would not want to go to the past at all

Why? Because you could mess things up completely

And cause something to mess around with the present and the future

If you even made one small tiny little slip up

But if I were able to go into the future

Then that would be completely different

I'd probably just check on how my life is in the future

And then if it's a terrible life that I live

Then I'd go back to the present time

And I'll have a chance to fix it all up

I want to brohoof this 10x....

I thought pretty much the same thing...   though the ONLY part in human history I would even care about going back to is the time before the settlers came to America... I would like to see the American Indian's days right before that.

I prefer to go back to the Jurassic or Cretaceous ...   screw human era's besides the one I mentioned..... What you wrote is so true and many don't see that.

6,000 years ago when Earth was called Arda and the Elves, Dwarves, and Hobbits inhabited it.

I'm fine with this current time period. I like it. There's not really any time period I'd like to visit. I like living in the '10s.

For me, I want to travel back to the 80's time period. I was born in 1990, and most of my older friends were born in the 80's. They always tell me that the 80's were the shiz. It was the time period where most of my favorite movies like Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and The Breakfast Club debuted. I want to be someone to experience those movies the first time they came out.

Most of all, the majority of the rock bands I like nowadays were popular in the 80's too. Like Bon Jovi and KISS.

I'd go back in time. Tell my future self to eff off the computer now and then, get good grades, be more friendly and try not to be forever alone. Yeah. That and tell me to get better at art. Besides that, go to medieval Ireland for a while and make a castle, give it to someone who will give it back to me when i get back to this time.

I'd probably travel back to sometime in between the late 1960s and the first half of the 1980s, mainly so I can go to Disneyland and experience several of their long-extinct rides/attractions, like the PeopleMover and Adventure Thru Inner Space.

If personally going back in time meant reversing your past to a certain moment in your life, then maybe I'd rewind back to the moment at EquestriaLA, when I greeted Tara Strong while she was leaving the convention center. She was going down the escalator at the time she noticed me and said hi to me, and I missed the perfect opportunity to make a quick Fairly Odd-Parents joke right in front of her, by referencing this scene from that show:

You might possibly get the idea.

I have no idea why Escalator Land didn't cross my mind when I saw her leaving. Hopefully, she'll be at the next EQLA this May, but too bad there aren't any escalators inside the Anaheim Marriott.

If I could go back into time. The 1960s would be nice. I can acctually hearnothing but decent music on the radio aqnd my hair would fit the theme. Besides those were timesfor music change and revoloution. I wouldprobly visit the 1980s and make start clubbing in the 1990s.

I'd go back and convince Leonardo to rustle up six more Mona Lisa's and then I brick them up in a basement in a manor house in France. Then I'd steal the real Mona Lisa and sell all seven to finance my time travel experiments.

Huh, that sounds familiar!

I'd go back to my birth. From there, I would raise myself up, prevent almost all the mistakes I have made, and learn from my first life and fix it with my second.

I would wait for a massive lottery to appear, make a note of the numbers the moment they come up, then travel one day back in time to buy a lottery ticket with the same numbers. I could just live straight on from there with a fortune. :)

On the historical learning side of things, there is a Stephen King novel about time travel (called 11/22/63, great book) that makes me want to travel to 1958's New England. The food would be better due to preservatives not being used back then, the public was like one giant family, the music and brand names made life seem really great. I'd love to see it for myself.

  • 8 months later...

I'd pick one of these epic rally escorts, then I would go back in time, in the 1500's. Then I'll just blaze through the roads in my car and scare everyone. Then I would be a legend (literally). xD

Or I'd like to go back in 1969, so I can buy a bunch of muscle cars and watch live shows from my favorite groups.

Aside from abusing the timeline in every-way I can think of for my own benefit. I'd love to go back to the 70's and meet Hunter S. Thompson. in person or the 1920's and visit New York just to have a look around.

Probably some point during my childhood. This modern era is nice and far less threatening than the past, so there we go. The big reason however is that I was most happy during my childhood. I did have the self hatred and depression problems that I do now and it was much easier to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, which are my favorite pleasures. I would love to live it again and even do a couple of things differently.
