Telling your parents you're a brony

I told my mom about it, and she was concerned I was insecure about it. :P Yeah, she was really cool about it, but she's used to my insanity.

However, I wil haven't told my father. He ridiculed me in front of the family for asking for one of the newer Pokemon games for Christmas because he found it too immature. I asked him if he'd rather have me play violent games, and he said, "Yeah, you need to grow up."

Needless to say, that ended my internal debate about telling him I was a brony.

However, I will test the waters. Probably tell him about brownies and ask him what he thinks. That's what I did for my mom, and after I was able to convince her we weren't all gay pedophiles, I told her I was a bring.

I can't stop laughing I know it's kinda immature to bring this up if someone hasn't already pointed it out but I'm gonna reference solrac here " NO NOT BROWNIES! " have a nice day!

Darn it, I just now realized how much the Nexus 7's autocorrect butchered my post... It's even worse on Google products than Apple products!

So, my parents are divorced, I live with my mom. When I told my mom this is pretty much how it went:

Mom: Hey can you come here for a minute.

(I was in my room watching the show.)

Me: Hold on, I am watching a show.

Mom: What show are you watching

Me: uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh...

*Mom enters room*: oh, um... *awkward silence*

Me: Um, I was actually watching My Little Pony...

Mom: Why?

Me: Goes on to explain that it has good morals and all that stuff.

Mom: Are you... Gay?

Me: No, there is actually a rather large male fanbase for it, and how it was actually a really good show.

Mom: Are you sure?

Me: *Gets up and slowly closing the door and pushing her out of the room at the same time.

She questions my sexuality all the time now, even though I have a girlfriend.

The End

  • 3 weeks later...

Parents should for all intents and purposes not even know what my little pony: friendship is magic is, or if their son/daughter likes it. It's just a silly little show! It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Well, I told my mum after I watched a couple of episodes. She teased me for a while after that, but I managed to convert her, too. :P

I haven't told my dad yet, but that's because I've had a really awkward relationship with him since my parents got divorced. I only see him every two weeks anyway, so I don't really need to tell him.

I have some bad news people, my parents are gonna take me to a psycologeist for being a brony sad.png

They think something is wrong with me

WHAT! This is utter bulls**t on your parents behalf. Here's a handy spot the difference guide for them:

In need of psychologist: Has a problem with the mind

Brony: Watches a TV show.

They are nothing alike. It's stuff like this that got me scared about telling people. Here's hoping that your parents finally see that watchinga TV show and mental illness are two very different things.

Just because it's your parents doesn't mean it's acceptable, passively or not. Them being your parents doesn't mean you unconditionally tolerate cowardly "logic" thrown at you from them. The fact that they reacted the way you described is deplorable to say the least.

You accepting their reaction means nothing except admitting defeat. They're showing cowardice by displaying such backwards logic and homophobia. If anything, ask them questions. Ask them why they think of this. Show us what we bronies are. Show them an episode that certainly isn't so "catered to little girls" like Lesson Zero. Show them the music, fanart, and fandom animations like Snowdrop and Double Rainboom. Retain your boundaries by not going too far and throwing fallacies and ad hominem insults as well, but don't be afraid to challenge their backwards opinions. Don't be a doormat!

Pfff...what makes you think I told my parents? They found out about it when they got my uncle (who works with our ISP before I moved off to college--now I pay for my own internet) told them about it based on my browsing history. My whole family is conservative. I'm pretty conservative myself, although I believe I'm the most open-minded individual in my family. So yeah, suffice to say, they weren't exactly pleased with me when they found out. They didn't disown me or anything. But I did get a good lesson as to why some of the things I did at the time were "childish."

I don't know if they know I'm still a brony. I go out of my way to make sure they don't know if they come for a surprise visit. And I stay super organized because my mom is type A. So now they think I'm all about taking care of business and they're super proud of me. I do take care of many things to some extent but I get the feeling that once finals are done and grades come in, it's going to be a little different. Let's just hope I ace all my finals now...

good idea, im gonna go out and do this.

But i think they still gonna find me weird, i used to be a furry and i showed them the furry fandom inside out and they still regected me as a furry, but best of luck i guess

Eh. I told them pretty much flat out that I'm into it and they rather don't care. I mean, I get the occasonal joke from my dad but, besides the poking at me from time to time about it, they seem rather cool with it.

Then again they probably wouldn't care if I told them something rather extreme about myself that I do, or at least they'd pay little mind to it. Yeah, I like having parents that don't mind what I do. Though I would like it if my dad stopped trying to look at what I do on the computer.

I'm sorry, but that's one of the most immature things I've ever heard in my life. Violence equals maturity? That makes zero sense. We're taught at a young age that violence is wrong. I understand that violent video games are fun, I enjoy them myself, but not inherently because they're violent. Finding violence mature is just stupid in my opinion...

Oh well, mini-rant there. Go on with your day. And my parents certainly don't know. I'd rather they not. They know what Bronies are and, while I don't think they'd have a problem with it, they'd probably tease me or something. I dunno. Probably wouldn't be all that bad.

I did the exact same thing with my best friend but I couldn't get him to be even a little open minded, I got him to watch one episode but he didn't watch it with an open mind or even tried to focus on the episode he did somthing different while watching it and then he told me it has a bad plot and is boring...

And now everytime he sees me doing something pony-related like changing my Minecraft skin to RD he rages like a little kid and doesn't even try to understand that it's just a show wich I happen to like angry.png

I know how u feel guys, being awkward around your parents of My Little Pony, don't worry they will come to their senses and accept it. everyone is different! Just be yourself that's all you can be ;). Btw my parents both know I'm a pegasister and not to boast or anything but my mum thinks its cool! I know I was shocked but she was really nice, she got me snacks and pony toys whenever a season premiere or finale came up. :D also she made rainbow cake for the Canterlot Wedding episodes!

Damn dude :/ They're seriously overreacting. What do they think a psychologist will say?

Go along with it, they'll be told there's nothing wrong with you, but they'll have to pay up for the session. Let them lose the money, it'll be their own fault and they'll realise how stupid that decision was.

I really don't care what my parents think about me. I'm pretty sure they already know I have all kinds of hobbies that would seem "alien" and "weird" to them, perhaps even "bad".

They've already caught me with MLP, I left my desktop unprotected and they with their annoying obsessive mind wanted to figure out with what kind of "criminals and outcasts" I was socializing when they found tons  of Pony related stuff loitering around on my desktop. They asked what it was so I told them. Sure they gave me the "I hope you're not serious."-look and walk away like they always do but I don't care. So I'm pretty much completely freed from that whole hiding stuff. Which is wonderful ^^

Wow...talk about supportive! laugh.png

I don't think I'm going to tell my parents point-blank, considering I recently sat through them having a conversation about how "weird" the whole brony thing is to them...and hey, maybe it is a little weird, but I'm weird, and they know that. So I don't think think they'd have a problem with it, though they might crack jokes about it every now and then, which I don't mind. Still, I'd rather "let it slip" to them than actually lay it on them as if I were coming out of the closet, you know?

Not sure how my sisters would take it. I think my eldest and youngest sisters would be most supportive of it, since my eldest is kind of a hippie pothead who might like the show herself, and my lil' one is endlessly supportive of me just as I am of her. The middle one, though...she might raise an eyebrow, I think. huh.png
