How do you feel about converts? (MLP wise)

I happen to use be one of the "DEAR LORD WTFITS" crowd.

I'm making the thread to remind people not to long ago it wasn't an uncommon that many of our brothers and sisters here wouldn't have touched MLP with a 10 ft pole outside to look down at it.

It shouldn't be surprising when a politician, or someone on the radio kicks MLP, alot of us did at one point.

but lets not to far of topic.

Are you fine with the "Reformed" hater?  Does it amuse you?

and just how much of the brony populace do you feel are "converts" so to speak.

People who went in kicking and screaming  so to speak.

While I never considered myself a hater, if you told me a year ago that I will be a big fan of this series I wouldn't have believed you. One of my friends became a Brony and I found it extremely strange. I listened to what he had to say about it but  I just couldn't understand why he would watch a show like MLP.  Then, early this summer he convinced me to watch Equestria Girls with him and it was a lot better than what I was expecting. Made me curious to check out the show and the rest is history. I don't know how many Bronies are converts but I think I am one and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other people here were too. Hearing about this show and observing the Brony Fandom from the outside is a very strange experience but once people give it a chance I think most people will at least understand why we enjoy this to such a high degree even if they don't like it as much themselves.

I'll be the first person to say EG isn't nearly that bad...

that being said, he used that as the bait to draw you in?  As a gambler i would gone for better odds lol.

I'm trying to imagine starting with equistra girls that would set me back months LOL i would imagine.

HEY!

I'm a convert actually. I was never a hater, I don't hate any people for anything. Anyhow, my ex-girlfriend was adamant that I watched it and I refused to watch it time and time again and thought it was terrible personally.

One day, I got extremely bored and decided to humour her wishes so I downloaded all 3 seasons and I fell in love after the second episode. I sat and watched every episode there and then (obviously with sleeping and restroom breaks) and I am now a proud brony who owns a bit of merch and has all the music on my iPhone.

Equestria Girls is also my favourite cartoon film and is my second favourite film of all time. The music, the animation and the story line are all amazing and I still think the ending is really sweet in that they forgive Sunset Shimmer!

So yeah! PROUD TO BE A CONVERT <3

He dared me to watch it actually :D. I was like "sure why, not? I'll rip the movie apart Rifftrax style". I was gonna watch it like I would a Twilight movie. My plan was to laugh at how bad it is and make fun of it. His intention was not to draw me to the series just to watch a movie with me. But as we were watching I found myself actually (and not ironically as I expected) enjoying the movie. I was laughing at some jokes and genuinely became curious. Then when we finished I told him how surprised I was and he jokingly said that next thing I'll know I'll be watching the three seasons. And since I had nothing better to do at the time I thought I'd give it a chance. I don't think Equestria Girls is bad, but I don't like it that much. However, I expected it to be really dumb and bad and I think a combination of surprise ,new found curiosity and having nothing better to do managed to convince me to watch a few episodes. It was a slim chance and a lot of circumstances had to be right but things turned out a lot better than either of us expected before watching Equestria Girls I think :D.

Honestly, though I have zero evidence to back this up I'm willing to wager that half of this forum's population are converts. Perhaps all of us are, if you stretch the meaning of convert from "former hater" to "people who used to think this whole thing was a little strange." Therefore I have no issues whatsoever with them. It doesn't really matter how they came into it, their love for the show is no less real.

Reformed haters are fine in my booked. They understand how wrong they were for bashing something they knew nothing about. I myself have never bashed MLP. I just saw it and moved on. When FiM aired, I loved it. I think a good number of bronies are converts.

I never bashed the show or hated it, I was just one of the people who thought it was weird for guys in eighth grade to like a kid's show about colorful pastel ponies. One of my friends wore a Derpy muffins shirt and even attended an afterschool Brony club they had set up that year. They had posters for it and everything in the cafeteria. I was just like OOOK weird.

Then another friend during freshmen year made me listen to music from the show on the bus with him one morning and I thought Hey this stuff is pretty good for a kid's show. Pinkie's songs were my favorite so I looked her up on Youtube, watched a couple clips then resigned to watching the first episode. Let me just say I've been hooked since, and I'M PROUD TO BE A BRONY! So I guess I'm a half convert, I didn't hate the show before, but I thought it was strange how many people liked it

But as for how I feel about ex haters joining the fandom WELCOME TO THE HERD  It's always great for newbies to join the fandom regardless if they were haters or not ;) We still love y'all.  At least they acknowledge that all their thoughts and stereotypes about the show were wrong and that because they gave it a chance, they love it now

stereotypical hater (though, i didn't really hate, but i thought it was weird that straight guys would like something so girly)

was told it was a good show for anyone

laughed

after weeks of asking me to, they bribed me into watching the pilot

watched pilot and was mildly intrigued

due to the cliffhanger, i watched ep 2

aside from rarity herself and the sea serpent, i enjoyed it

so i wanted to see what the rest of the show would be about

watched the first half of the third episode (unknowingly)

was confused at the break

decided to watch the 4th

aaand the 5th

up until the 7th

it was then that i realized

  • the show was better than expected
  • aside from rarity and the serpent, it wasn't that girly
  • i...freakin...love...fluttershy
  • and that i am a brony

A fan is a fan the way I see it whether they found it by themselves or someone else "converted" them. In my case I am a convert because a friend of mine did recommend I watch it which I eventually did once my curiosity about Discord got the better of me. I am find with reformed haters because lets face it we all screw up and do stupid stuff every now and then and fessing up to it and changing the behavior is a sign of character. I have heard a lot of stories of former haters becoming bronies and I am inclined to give most of them the benefit of the doubt.

Very well said :)!

But I have to disagree with you about the "all" of us are haters :P. I got into MLP  because I was looking for a new anime to watch, I had never seen any opinions on it before I watched it!

TBH I don't really have an issue with straight haters, its not like there effecting me, just wasting there own time!

I used to be a hater. I wouldn't have used the term, but that's what I was. I have a brony friend, and I thought he was off his rocker. He is normally a bit...out there, and I assumed MLP was just a bit of eccentricity. Everyone reading this is going to be unhappy about these next few words, I became a brony through Cupcakes (the MisterDavie video). The song was awesome (Ready to Die, Andrew W.K.) and I got a kick out of one pony mutilating another pony. You could say I was a definite hater. Half a year ago, I was bored and had nothing better to do. I decided to give MLP: FiM a try, I was hooked in 10 seconds flat.

Seeing as I went from serious hater to pony lover, I have nothing wrong with people who decide late that they love the show.

First, I am in no way shape or form a convert of any kind. I started watching the show after I stumbled upon the "Flutterguy" clip on YouTub. I thought it was funny and started to watch the show. I watched a few episodes before I ever heard of Bronies.

Second, after I did learn about bronies, this concept of "converting" people really started to annoy me. I see it as one of the main reasons non-fans see bronies as bothersome at the least, or utter whack-jobs at the worst. A lot of non-fans actually see it as nut-jobs treating a kiddy-cartoon as a religion they are compelled to find converts for. To be totally blunt, it's an absolute embarrassment.

There is no other TV show in existence that's fan base consistently tries to ram the show down non-viewers throats. That's where the "Mods are asleep, post ponies" meme came from. People would hijack say, a site devoted to Japanese science fiction anime, and post pictures and links for MLP all over it. Of course it annoyed the other site users.

How many times do we see threads with titles like "How can I make my best friend/cousin/brother/sister/whatever a Brony"?

WHY?

Why is it so important to try to force every person you know to watch a show, just because you watch it? Frankly, out of the two I prefer the BBC's Doctor Who, but I don't run around insisting everyone else watch it too. Frankly, I don't care what shows my friends watch! Why do so many bronies think it's important for everyone to drop everything and only watch the things they want them to watch? Like I said, I find the "Convert" concept to be an embarrassment. It just makes Bronies look like asses.

I really do love misplace hatred and rage,

but generally it's when i'm trying to generate it LOL.

I've never really pimped the show on anyone.  (Okay i send annnoying links to online people but i do that with alot crap LOL).

I would genuily engauge your rage, but it seems so out of left field,

I swear I don't even know where to begin?

I actaully have religion myself.  So no watching MLP isn't full filling some spirtual hole in my soul.

As for being an absolute embarrassment, I never said it wasn't LOL.  I think you totally mis read me madam or sir.

I would sooner get caught watching porn than MLP LOL.

I read the thread on here someone made "I came out to my dad that I'm a broney."

you coulnd't pay me enough LOL.  Oh hell no.

oh some what of topic if your a dr who fan you might love this http://edowaado.deviantart.com/art/Doctor-Whooves-From-another-world-Pt-1-297393335?q=gallery%3Aedowaado&qo=0

So cindy, i'm guessing your annoyed that we've choosen to jump on board with those of us who use to hate the show?

cause if your answer is "no that's not what I meant."  that's kinda what I orginally asked LOL and you hijacked the thread into some far off galaxy.  Don't feel bad I've done it myself.

Your ego is showing.

You asked for opinions on "converts" and I gave you mine. It wasn't expressing hate. Just honest confusion. My comment was directed at the fandom in general, not at you. What I was driving at is very simple. The whole concept of being converted, or converting someone into a fan of a cartoon is downright stupid. Like I said, it NEVER happens with any other show. Why do people (And that doesn't mean just you, by the way) think they need to force others to watch what they watch? It's a bit on the pathetic side.

Tut this is me on my absoulute 100 percent best behaviour.  My knee jerk reaction would be to react poorly, and over react.  But really again I didn't get what you were driving at.

Your confusion is infectious ^^, i wonder what confusion would look like as a cutie mark?  (no seriously if anyone has suggestions I would like to hear them).

And nonsense.  I've had people try and convert me to

True blood (i've peeked at it,)

Weeds (My short attention span never let me watch it for long)

Supernatural (i've caught half a show that wasn't to bad)

Hanibal (but that was mostly forums, and I already was open to the conversation, the episode i saw was good)

I literally had 3 cubs fans (all girls back in college I BULL SHIT YOU NOT) hi jack me on the way back from the bar to the dorm to their aparntment to watch the game, this was the same year the cubs got with in striking distance of winning the world series.

It's kinda funny cause I know buck all about baseball.

and by the by you said "Not just you." implying you included me ^^.  Ego nothing, your own statement collaberates my assumption.

And again to many of those shows when asked to watch glee or american idol, you know the default answer?

"That sounds gay no."

You see, i think Bronies take that

"that sounds gay." extra personal because well, some of them probrably started out thinking that way to begin with.

But lets get back to your question, and to be totally clear you feel converts are stupid,

Cause MLP Is so incredably girly,

that it is so many things I hate as a default,

singing,

happiness,

childish, etc, etc, etc liking it is well.... a change of mind frame.  IE it's a converstion.  To like the show because I am such a misserable ass,

i feel like to some degree something clearly has to have changed, because the king of cold (IE myself) would never have touched this frilly, fru, fru nonsense to begin with.

And to be honest I did have to take a good hard look at the show, to "get it."  I mean besides discord, and a few golden moments.

As you (yes) lumped me in as pathetic for liking it, as I've clearly stated I don't  try and convert others.

and game of thrones, people will SHOVE THAT GOD DAMN SHOW DOWN YOUR THroat (i kinda like it, i disliked it at first but I've peaked long enough to know I don't hate it).

It's not a faith for me.  Even though i feel the shows designed Celestial to be God, (Example thank Celestial, and no one ever thanks Luna EVER), and not just a god, but thee numero uno supreme being with a greek, roman esk twists here and there.

that could be your problem if you suggesting Other people that are not my self (which you did not you included me)

are faithless and in fact are missing a spiritual center.

They saw a show that won them over in spite of them selves, that has lessons, a deity, a fallowing,

and maybe that's your answer.  Blame Celestail.  She's good for it ^ ~.

How many shows have the writers interpretation of God guiding the main cast?

I think there are two questions here; What do you think of converts, and what do you think of converters. For converts, a fan of the show is a fan of the show, no matter how they started.

As for converters, I couldn't have said it better myself. There is nothing wrong with recommending the show and encouraging people to watch it, everyone who enjoys a show will do as much. The line needs to be drawn when people are actively pushing the show on others. Just as haters derogate bronies, we often derogate haters in equal recompense. The show teaches love, kindness, and tolerance, yet we often forget these virtues when dealing with non-bronies.

Most of us wouldn't have become "converts" if we were never encouraged to watch the show. We should welcome in converts, but not rope 'em up and drag them in kickin' and screamin'.

I don't really see the difference between someone who went in "kicking and screaming" and someone else who just decided to give the show a shot off the top of their head.  If someone likes MLP, then they're a bonified brony in my book and that's cool by me, and if they don't like MLP, well, that's cool by me too.  :)

I can give you an in show example.

Remember pinkie keen?

And how dismissive twilight is on pinkie's tail spidey sence.

She changed her mind, but it was kicking and screaming LOL.  To quote pinkie "that was the doozey."

it's just something of note.

I always found it funny they cast Celestials main student as the doubter for that show.

Oh no, you misunderstand, I know what you're talking about when you say someone who goes in "kicking and screaming", I just don't see why I'd feel any different about them liking the show now than I would about, well, someone who just on a whim decided to check out the show and ended up liking it.  If they like the show, no matter the circumstances that led to their watching it, it's all the same to me.  :)

Depending on what kind of convert really. When someone is a hater and becomes a brony because he gives the show a chance, that's pretty cool and sweet. But I don't really get why some people need some kind of incentive to watch the show. What I mean by this is people who don't understand the show and don't feel like watching the show, suddenly give the show a chance because one aspect of the fandom seems attractive.

Like, how can your opinion change so fast because of one aspect? I know a few people who would've never given the show a second glance if it weren't for other people posting pony music. How can music, entirely seperate from the show, suddenly give you the urge to watch the show when you obviously weren't going to like it and watch it if you hadn't encountered fan-made music? It feels more like a delusion they force themselves into because they feel obligated to like the show, else they aren't "allowed" to like the music for some reason unknown to me.

I'm always skeptical about their love for the show or the fandom. Are they just in it for the music (aka, are you just riding along the hypetrain?) or are you really in it because you like the show and the fandom?

I first encountered ponies on 4chan and when I watched the show, I joined the fandom because I like the show and the fandom, not because I just happen to like a few songs or one piece of decal.

But that's just my own opinion. As long as you're in it for the show and the ponies, I'm fine with it.

well I feel fairly positive toward converts XD it'd be pretty hypocritical to be against them. I was you're massive typical a-hole hater who would go out of his way to tell a brony how stupid the fandom was  *coughs nervously* funny how things change I guess

I can't really say that I was ever a convert. I never bashed the show to begin with. In my mind, logic dictated that if there was such a large number of adults that loved the show then it must be good. People don't just flock to these kinds of things for no reason. I'll admit that once I saw Lauren Faust's name on it I knew I had to at least give it a fair shot. It was no guarantee that I would like it, but it did improve the odd that I would.

I personally like converts. Nothing says "I told you so" quite like getting a person to come around to your perspective. ^_^ It's subtle and they might not admit it, but it will always be in the back of their mind that you were right and they were wrong.
