Friend says I'm too old to watch kids cartoons

That's probably the problem. He needs to mature a bit if he's judging people older than him like he knows better.

As posted before, C.S. Lewis says it well. The fear of childishness is a childish thing itself. As Picasso puts it, a bit more abstractly, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."

(Anyway, if you want to do something to secretly get back at him, try describing awesome/funny things about MLP, but without telling him it's MLP or a kids cartoon. Turn all the characters into live action humans and put them in a dangerous fantasy setting or something. Worked for me.)

Actually I showed him MLP at one point, he liked it and then his mom says he couldn't watch it (something about her hearing about the bad parts of the fandom)

I;d say challenge him on it.  Ask him why it's a bad thing.  And you know what, there is no good answer to that question.

People need to grow up, true- but that's when it comes to life.  When it comes to entertainment, who cares?

To me, dismissing something because it's for kids and "childish" is actually a mark of immaturity.  Only kids are obsessed with the idea of trying to appear mature and adult.  Actual adults don't care; they do what they want.

Well it’s nothing new to have a kid’s cartoon that adults also enjoy: I wouldn’t worry about your friends comments on being apparently too old for MLP, because that’s obviously nonsense.

If the topic comes up again ask him to give his reasons for saying your too old for them, and then you can refute them and tell him it’s not just you who enjoys it.

Tell them it's not a kid's cartoon anymore.

If they keep bothering you, ask them what is their actual problem?

If they do have problem, well, there you go, it's their bucking problem.

You could even lie about certain features. If they don't care for the show, you can totally make up the story lines to something that doesn't sound like MLP at all, but something epically awesome. If they don't intend to watch it, well, lie all you like! If they change their mind and do seek ponies, well, I don't think they'll be irked, they'll thank you for it.. ;)

Plus, no offence to your friend or anyone but, no one has the right to tell someone what they can and can't do. Whether they're too old or too young for something that entertains them. I know what I just said means that a 16 year old can go out and get drunk and get pregnant because it's what they enjoy... But it's their life. If they want to wreck it, they can, but what's wrecking about watching MLP?

Basically, I suppose all you can do is ignore them, until they either give up or turn into a Brony themselves.

To be honest my parents would find it odd for me to enjoy MLP... But then again I personally think if an adult or even a teenager has the capacity to watch and enjoy a children's show... that shows two things... they haven't lost touch with their inner child... and they'd make awesome parents... If a parent enjoys a kids show, they can watch it with their kids... family bonding time... You probably don't have children... but in enjoying the children's show that it is, it shows that you have the potential to spend time with your kids instead of letting them sit in front of the tv alone...

Who cares if adults like kid shows it doesn't matter. If your friend makes fun of u for liking mlp let him/her be. I watch Spongebob and My Little Pony. Yes I've been made fun of at school sometimes but that doesn't mean that I stop liking it. Don't let them talk $hit about u behind ur back

Don't sweat it.  When I was a teen, I tried giving up on cartoons.  But the Chipmunks, Transformers, and GI Joe were way too cool to ever walk away from.  And, I admit it, I even watched a few episodes of G1 My Little Pony.  :)

Your friend is entitled to his opinion but it's only an opinion.  There is no logical, reason based purpose why anybody has to stop watching cartoons due to their age.

My brother has the same mindset and to that I say "Who cares?" Who care if the cartoon you are watching is made for younger or more mature audiences, if it's good and you enjoy it then it shouldn't matter. Hell, I'll still probably watch cartoons no matter how old I get. The C.S.Lewis quote has already been said, but another one I think fits was:

You’re dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up anyway.

I remember many years ago when I read this one letter posted in this issue of Nintendo Power (I miss that magazine so much) it was written by this one kid whose grandmother passed away recently. In this letter he describes alot of the good times he and "Nintendo Granny" as he called her and his (I don't remember if it was his brother or sister) used to have fun playing video games together. "Nintendo Granny" could have easily decided that video games were for kids and they might not have had those memories, but instead of listening to the arbitrary double standards of a society with very screwed up priorities she just decided to enjoy playing video games with her grandkids. So many kids try to "grow up" but what they are really doing is acting childish and selfish by lying to themselves to conform to some arbitrary standard of what a grown up should be. I pay my bills, I take care of my responsibilities and I deal with a lot of depressing soul crushing bullshit that comes with being an adult so I don't see why I shouldn't for at least a little while have the ability to forget all that and just do what I want to do even if it is something aimed toward children.

Okay, for starters, Friendship is Magic is a family cartoon, not a kid's cartoon. There's more of a difference between the two than people like to think.

And no, there's no reason anyone should be restricted from watching a show simply due to the projected target demographic. There are grown men who still watch the likes of Dora the Explorer and Barner and Bob the Builder, and you know what? There's nothing wrong with that at all. It's entirely based on personal preference and the interests of the individual not the demographic the show is "required" to have.

Tell him that firstly, Tosh.0 is a shitty attempt at humor, and secondly, shows put little adult jokes in cartoons all the time.

Its all about what society expect of you. added to that we have gen 1 to 3 as the popular image of my little pony in the popular mind. That show was definitely a kids show gen 3 on the other hand is very much a family show. why else would the show put in nods to the old shows that I doubt ten year old little girls would not get.

You're definitely not too old to watch kids cartoons, you never grow up from watching cartoons. Cartoons are enjoyable for all ages, those who don't realize that must have never watched cartoons when they were younger. I watch a lot of cartoons and don't plan on ever stopping watching cartoons.

Things like this make me a bit angry. I'm a teenager. The only thing I watch are kids/family shows (not any of the ones on now aside from MLP:FIM; shows these days are really bad in my opinion -_-) Does that make me dumb? Does that make me immature? No. Ask him why he has a problem with it. Maturity has nothing to do with entertainment preferences. Watching adult shows does not make you anymore mature, and watching kids shows does not make you immature. Maturity has to do with how you handle things. Just because its made for kids/families doesn't mean you can't enjoy it too.

You made sure to point out that all kids cartoons are made by adults right?

EDIT: Also, adults are supposed to be secure enough in themselves that "kids shows" don't threaten their status as "grown-ups".

Age is irrelevant in entertainment. If I want to watch My Little Pony, than I'm going to. I don't care if it wasn't intended for my age, or gender. Hell, my nearly 50 year old dad and I still watch (kid) cartoons. Why not watch them? There are a lot of good ones out there. My dad, and I saw Frozen the other day, and it was an awesome movie. Was the movie meant for kids? More than likely, but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by everbody. If you want to watch Cartoons, I say go for it! :D

Personality, nor taste in media and hobbies make a person mature or adult. What makes a person mature is the ability to be responsible when it's called for. I'd argue that having such a shallow view of what it means to be an adult as your friend is itself immature and insecure.

On the topic of toons' being kiddie, let me tell you about a Courage the Cowardly Dog episode that actually aired. There was literally a episode(with was surprisingly good) that is essentially about Courage helping a girl save her friend from a abusive boyfriend(who seems to be a gang-banger if I remember right). TVtropes dredged up even more about it I missed when  I watched it as a kid:

Kitty and Bunny in the episode "The Mask" are heavily implied to be lesbians, Kitty being the kind who is a lesbian because she thinks men are scum. All you have to do is substitute the word 'dog' with 'men' and suddenly it makes sense. Kitty claims that "all dogs are evil" and hates Courage just for being a dog because of her experience with Bunny and her boyfriend Mad Dog. When eating dinner Eustace comments on the mask and asks Kitty what she's trying to hide to which she responds by pointing out his various shortcomings as a husband. Mad Dog is the paradigm of abusive boyfriends and makes it obvious that he is representing the negative aspects of dogs (men). Yet after Courage saves Bunny and she is reunited with Kitty, Kitty admits that not all 'dogs' are bad. Besides this, there's the obvious use of lesbian slang. Hell, there was a scene where it sounded like Bunny was actually having an orgasm when she was thinking about Kitty.

So, yeah. That aired on a kids show. I'd link the episode but I can't find it on Youtube without commentary.
