Humans could live to 500 years old, according to new research.

But the basics are that through studying a mutated molecule in a worm scientists could discover a way to extend human life by 30%, which when combined with insulin-signalling mutations would double the time they live. Or something like that.

So, what are your opinions on this? Would you want life to be extended by that much? Do you think this method will really work as well as they say? And, if so, when do you think this will be available for human testing? Discuss.

I'm actually curious on the effects towards body development that it would have. In addition, to answer your first I probably would like to see the world change around me for an extended period, as long as my body didn't age at the normal rate otherwise I would be nothing more than a withered husk by 500.

I'll want to live only to see the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl. Once they do, I can finally rest in peace.

I'd rather Die than live to be 101 years old.

This^

Theres no reason at all to live that long, not for anyone.

We've already a HUGE problem with over population, and all this life extension crap is only going to make it far worse.. oh wait, it already is making it worse...

I'm content with the idea of being dead before 40, I've already had a good life, done what I wanted, and gone where I wanted.

Not much left at all. Terribly boring now that my goals are all complete, and fearing death is hardly a way to live.

Hmm.... interesting, but I seriously hope this won't be available for humans. I mean... after 100 years, it hurts to live! Seriously; life is boring, your bones hurt, you see everyone you love die, etc. It's the necromancy thing, where you live forever, being a crawling piece of flesh.

Oh well, only the rich and famous could buy this anyway. Nope for this thing, death is too beautiful.

Inconceivable. Scientists for decades have talked about increasing the lifespan of humans, all without success. Our lifespan seems to be maxed out as is, and frankly, that's good. Our population is already too large, and really, I wouldn't want to work until I was 130 to retire.

I'd rather not live to 500 years old. You know, 80 seems like a ripe, old age to go.

1. Being that old would cost my family a lot of time and a lot of money

2. Having lifespans like that would be a much larger burden on our already heavily burdened planet.

3. Living that much longer far increases the likelihood that someone could develop certain diseases that come with age like Alzheimer's. Not to mention that by the time you reach 60 to 70 years, you've lost a lot of your sensory capabilities. By the time you reach 200 years of age, you'll probably be both deaf and blind.

4. Our bodies end up in pretty rough shape by the time we get old. Imagine how much worse they'd be if we could live twice the normal age? 500 years? Yeah.

So all in all, I'd rather die at 75 to 80 years old. If I live to be 100, then that's great. But not much older than that. People have no business living to be 500 years old.

This is a very good point!

So let's say retirement age is 65 years. So if you live to 500, you're talking about possibly living 435 years off your retirement? That's not happening. Let's go off percentages here. If someone retires at 65 years and lives to 80, then they will have to work for 81.25% of their total lifespan. So let's take that 81.25% and multiply it by 500.

Your new retirement age is now 407 years old. That's pretty ludicrous. I'm not going to be working at 407 years old! I hope to be a rotting corpse six feet under for at least 300 years by the time my body hits 407 years of age!

Heh, well this thread got rather depressing.

The thing is, since most of our lives revolve around making money as well as being restricted depending on how much money there is, it really is no wonder that many people, in both mind and body, end up rotting in the prison that is their own home. But at least, depending on their income, they can make it a comfy little cell. Way more comfy than the ones who step out of line get.

Yeah, seems like living in a society running on this economic system makes life seem pretty demanding, unrelenting and of course; boring. Honestly, who in their right mind would want to endure living in this system for five centuries?

Man 500 years thats a long time! :o

It's kind of scary to think where all this could lead up, who knows in the future they could find away to make the human body go on for even longer ! 0_o

I read something similar about extending human life by 3D printing hearts.

Personally, I'd despise living for 500 years. 90 would be the longest I'd ever want to live to, after that, all you can do is sit around in pain watching the ruins of the world and everyone you love die.

That would depend on a number of factors.

Would this new study increase aging? If I turn 200, how will I look? Will I just look like a boney old man?

Also, how would this be placed inside of me? Surgery? Injection?

oh hey cool. I love to read stuff like this, it makes me very interested :P

Though about this particular thing... eh. I doubt it will happen. If we will ever be able to extend lives, I don't see it happening earlier than...hm.. 86 years from now (I took a guess ok :3 ). At least.

If it was me, yeah! Sure! I'd live 500 years if I could. I love life! Life is great :)I mean I could always kill myself if it sucks after 150 years, right? Haha.

am I the only one who would live for so long? :o

It's sometimes amusing to see people act so superior that they don't need or even want to live a long life. I could never be satisfied with the amount of knowledge I have now. I always want to learn and know more. To go to different and new places and if I could live for thousands of years and travel the stars then I would. Who needs death? No one. Age and dying is a technical problem which can be solved one day.

The ultimate goal of technology's advancement is an end to mortality so I'm all for any step in that direction.

Anyone who says "Ugh, I'd get so bored!" is just uncreative and already incredibly boring. :P
