I was gonna say Winston Churchill. But it seems someone has already beat me too it.

No real reason, i just sorta like him. A WW2 hero in my book.

And i don't know if this counts. Since i have no clue on the historical William Wallace. But i did quite enjoy that Freedom speech before going to battle in the Braveheart movie by Mel Gibson, that was so inspiring. To fight for. I was actually really hoping for Scotland to be independent last year in a vote poll election. But that's up to scots though

Oh man how much time do I have? I have a lot. There are so many unknown heroes in history that never got the respect they deserved. If I had to choose one man as an outstanding human being, it would this man; Chiune Sugihara.

sugihara_sidebar_01.jpg

Sugihara was serving a diplomat and informant on Nazi movement on behalf of Japan in Lithuania during World War II. Part of his job was issuing visas to people traveling to Japan, granting them safe passage until they reach the island nation.

After Russia occupied Lithuania, putting both fleeing Polish Jews and Lithuanian Jews in danger, Sugihara realized he had to do something. He contacted his higher ups in Japan, asking for permission three times to issue visas to save these people. They told him no, he was not to issue any visas all three times.

With little options and encouragement from his wife to do the right thing, Sugihara disobeyed his orders and began to issue visas to Jews to grant them access to Japan. He not only knew his job was finished, but he had just broken serious Japanese social and business rules. You do not disobey orders from a senior, that's completely out of the question. But Sugihara did, and he spent the next month signing as many visas as he could, spending up to 20 hours a day doing so. It was a race against time, as the Russian occupancy was set to close the consulate.

When the consulate finally closed, he boarded his train with his wife, desperate Jews banging on the train begging for visas. Sugihara began throwing blank visas with just his signature on them out the windows as the train pulled away, saving more lives in this final act.

When he returned to Japan, Sugihara resigned (his wife claimed he was forced to due to the visas) and worked menial jobs. In Israel, Sugihara is a celebrated hero, but back in his native Japan most people didn't even know what he had done. Even Sugihara didn't know how many people he had saved.

It's estimated that Chiune Sugihara's incredible act of defiance saved 6,000 Jews.

Abraham Lincoln because I grew up with my dad telling me all about him. I know quite a bit about him, but it's not like I can name everything right off the back though. *shrug*

Also, I'm not sure if she counts but...

Aya Kito:

She was diagnosed with something called Spinocerebellar disease (or something). She started writing this journal about life with this condition. She is one of my inspirations because she kept writing and writing and writing no matter how hard the condition tried to take away this ability for her.

Here's a video from the drama that they based off her journal. It'll tell you more about the condition she had.

Sadly, she died before I was born at the age of 25. I was born in 1988, so go figure.

My favourite person from the past would have to be Leonardo da Vinci. He was/is the one who painted the Mona Lisa, for those of you whom don't know his work.

He was born and raised in Florence, Italy, back in the Renaissance days. (Which happens to be one of my favourite periods of time. :3 )

One of his quotes I just adore the most is "Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master.

Leonardo just adored learning, and doing everything. He didn't just want to sick to one thing, he did, and was amazing at virtually everything. It is for that reason I admire him.

I too also admire Emilie du Châtele for her amazing works in mathematics. Her and Einstein are up there in my top historians of all time. :3

-Fluttershy :3

(Sorry for the rambling!)

Actually, i have many favorites.....

Maria Montessori - changed school in what we know today. (I developed the love for biographies after reading her when young).

Isaac Asimov - science fiction writer.

Voltaire - philosopher.

Jacques Costeau - cientist.

Joan Dar'c - now, thats a funny one. I like her when young because i thought of her as the saint of people who got "screwed up"  because helped others, later in life i find out she's the saint of people who study and work (does this makes her a "nerd" saint?).

and so many others, like Hellen Keller, Piet Mondrian, etc...

Now that i stop to think about, Asimov, Keller and Mondrian are not historical figure but culture personalities.... is this still valid?

Also, there's Walt Disney and Osamu Tesuka...

Historical figures would be more around political/economical/religious/scientific areas, i think...

Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He implemented the New Deal, established Social Security, led the United States through WWII and helped found the United Nations. I'm not quite sure if I'd be willing to go as far as to call him my favorite historical figure of all time, but he's certainly up there. Some other favorites of mine include:

US Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Eugene Debs

UK Winston Churchill, Clement Attlee, George Orwell

Russia and the USSR Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Leon Trotsky, Georgy Zhukov, Mikhail Gorbachev

Germany Otto von Bismarck, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Konrad Adenauer

France Louis XIV, Voltaire, Charles de Gaulle

Italy Giuseppe Garibaldi

Spain Enrique Lister, Juan Carlos I

Mexico Benito Juarez, Lazaro Cardenas

Ghana Kwame Nkrumah

Kenya Jomo Kenyatta

South Africa Nelson Mandela

India Mahatma Gandhi

Some of my favorite historic figures have been named above, but i'll throw in my two cents anyway;

1) Miyamoto Musashi. A great strategist and swordsman, winning his first duel in the age of 13, since then winning every duel (obviously, since duels would be determined by death back then) with a surviving discipline and powerful art combining practical martial knowledge and philosophy. One of his works in particular, the book of five rings, a text attribute to him on kenjutsu (swordsmanship), is considered a great martial masterpiece to this day.

2) Nikola Tesla, A true man of science who devoted his entire life to his works, considered by many a deranged lunatic by the time he was old. His works on electromagnetism and innovations paved the way for modern electronic appliances, most notably is his contribution of inventing the AC (alternating current) delivery of power method.

3) Alan Turing, You may know this name from the movie featuring Benedict Cumberbatch portraying him, but either way this misunderstood genius is considered among the founding fathers of computer science. One of the most renowned modern models for representing the algorithmic approach to solvable problems (the Turing Machine) is named after him.

As a big English nerd I gotta give a shout-out to my homie Shakespeare. Drama has come a long way from disguises and overly-elaborate tragedies, but you gotta appreciate all the universal musings that his works explore.

There are many historical figures I admire. It's very difficult to choose one. I could go on forever listing people I admire. Winston Churchill, FDR, MLK, Robert the Bruce (Braveheart depicts him as a traitor, but in reality he was one of Scotlands greatest heros and leaders of all time), William Shakespeare, etc...

I guess I tend to lean more towards the artistic side when I have to choose. Maybe Vincent Van Gogh, who I think is one of the greatest artists of all time. Or maybe Richard Wagner, who pioneered modern music through his operas and symphonies.

This man, George S. Patton, Jr.

He was a massive badass in almost every respect, tough as nails and always ready to kick butt. Absolutely unafraid to say whatever he wanted to say whenever he wanted to say it, and he paid for that on more than one occasion.

I've been reading his memoirs recently and I like him more and more with every word.

While I don't keep much track of him lately, the 14th Dalai Lama always came across as an inspirational person to me... I appreciate his down-to-earth adherence to peace and his value in happiness, as well as his humility about Buddhism :3

My favourite historical figure is Franz Stigler: a German fighter pilot from WWII

Who instead of shooting down, escorted a heavily damaged American B17 out of German airspace and became best friend with the B17 pilot after the war ^^
