List of "You know, for kids!" Moments - Brainstorming

Kids aren't fragile beings that easily breaks, they can handle complex emotions and thoughts earlier than you think, they are mostly just bad a communicating it.

I believe that's supposed to be the joke.

"You know, for kids!" is a jab at people who still linger in the "Animation Age Ghetto", at least from my perspective. People say, "Oh, I don't watch cartoons. I'm an adult." And then you show them a "You know, for kids!!" moment and say, "THIS is what the 'non-adults' are watching!!"

It shows off stuff the animation age ghetto crowd wouldn't think is in "kids" media.

My definition is (was?) that it meant that this doesn't suit a children's show.

So you mean that the phrase is meant as a wake up call to others, that these themes are suitable for a broader audience?

If so, then it adds up, and I agree with you. Pretty heavy topics can be dealt with by kids given the right framing (typical a happy ending).

However, I'm not sure your definition is how most people define it. But I can't prove that, and I'd love to hear what others think about this

Edit: My text was a bit unclear so tl;dr

You mean the phrase is inclusive of grown ups, rather than exclusive of children.  :pinkie:

Yeah, this is a much better definition of what I had in mind.

Anyway, I got 21 potential things here, (Not all from here) any mas?

From today's episode as well:

Rarity using her powers of...ah, "female persuasion" to convince a stallion to do her a favour...for kids!

That's something I'd expect Rarity to do, considering she also did that to a passerby in "Putting Your Hoof Down".

Rarity's interrogation techniques on the 3 guards

From today's episode as well:

Rarity using her powers of...ah, "female persuasion" to convince a stallion to do her a favour...for kids!

Rarity's seductive nature in "Rarity Investigates" on the poor Mail Stallion and Royal Guards...

You know....for kids!

That's something I'd expect Rarity to do, considering she also did that to a passerby in "Putting Your Hoof Down".

Was just about to say this

This isn't the first time. In Putting Your Hoof Down, Rarity manipulates that poor geeky stallion into giving Fluttershy the asparagus.

Still haven't seen anything out of the ordinary that I would consider adult themed yet.

I think the "You know, for kids!" meme is stupid. It's such a desperate attempt trying to justify the content of MLP.

Just think about Lion King which is for all ages. Death, deceit and evil are themes, yet they are presented in a good way.

Another example people reference this meme is the "violence". Think about Tom & Jerry, a comedy purely about human like animals getting hurt.

Kids aren't fragile beings that easily breaks, they can handle complex emotions and thoughts earlier than you think, they are mostly just bad a communicating it.

The only thing that deserves "You know, for kids!", are references to old movies, and themes that are too complex for kids to grasp. I couldn't find any good examples of the latter in MLP.

I couldn't find a clip including the part where he says: "Kill him" to the hyenas. That just adds that extra little flavor of evil.

Yeah it just seems like bronies are desperate to justify MLP has adult themes. There is no kids cartoon that hasn't gone over risque themes, no doubt animators always wants to go over the kiddy proof restrictions and have always been putting hints of it everywhere. The only full on kiddy proof show I could think of is Teletubbies and Dora the Explorer.

Yes, I would definitely agree there was a lot of fanservice in Rarity investigates. I mean,

every shot of her on the couch and her sprawled out over that guards' table is basically pin-up material!  :pout:

For the kids, right?

I would have to say that Twilight's mental breakdown in Lesson Zero and the Cutie Map come to mind when talking about this.

The obvious references to real-world communism I'll give you, but children would usually interpret Twilight's freakout in Lesson Zero as just goofy behavior that would fit in a cartoonish world. I can attest to this as I have nieces that agree with that statement.

I think for the most part, while MLP has its share of darker/disturbing moments (brainwashing in The Cutie Map, Pinkie's freakout in Party of One, Discord's corruption of the mane 6 in The Return of Harmony), they all seem like pretty typical cartoon stuff and there's not much I'd see as being particularly more "adult" than most cartoons. I mean, MLP is barely allowed to even hint at death, while, say, Steven Universe has an episode where the main character dies like 50 times, so yeah :P

I think a lot of the references are clearly aimed at the older audience, however: some kids might get Doctor Whooves, but they probably wouldn't the Big Lebowski bowling ponies, for example! Also The Shining pony, the Metal Gear Solid reference (Discord eps in general are good for this), Twilight saying "Winter is coming"...there's probably a ton more I'm forgetting. Again not unusual for cartoons, but probably closer to not being "for kids" :P

If Equestria Girls counts, you could maaaaybe say The Dazzlings are pushing it...they're probably the most overtly ~sexy~ characters MLP has ever done, what with being sirens and all?

Teach girls at a young age to manipulate boys! That's a good ideal!

Friendship games ahead

Twilight's transformation was very dark

Also I think her skirt went a bit too high

Oh yes, there was plenty of potential upskirt shots that were swiftly edited to add the missing pieces

...or else the reason we don't see anything despite the fact the skirts tended to blow high was the fact panties are completely optional at Crystal Prep

...for kids!
