My opinion is yes, many bronies count as furries.

However, many of the bronies who joined the fandom early on (like around 2010-2011) are NOT furries. From what I have seen, the more "furry-ish" members joined at a later date. This is of course not to say that there exist no furry-esque bronies who joined from the start; they are merely outliers :o

If you have a ponysona then you are definitely a "furry-ish" brony >.>

Furries are fans of the anthropomorphic animals. Bronies are fans of the specific show. The fandoms are essentially different. But surely there are a lot of furries in the community.

Not exactly. As previously stated, Furries are fans of anthropomorphic animal stuff, and bronies are fans of My Little Pony (of course that are outside of the target demographic).

Gonna hit yes and say Bronies are more of a subdivision of furries so technically not exactly.

Well, if liking anthropomorphic animals alone makes you a furry, then you could consider bronies to be a subset of furries. But I think that's too liberal of a way to define furies. You could probably put Sonic fans and most cartoon enthusiasts in general under the furry banner if you defined furies that way. Rather than define a collection of unrelated fandoms by something as vague as an interest in talking animals, it's better to define fandoms in terms of their interests, culture and habits.

Furries can be distinguished from furries in that they typically create all of their own content and characters, while bronies follow a specific TV series and create content based around that. Interests like cosplay and conventions are prominent in both fandoms, but there's still also some pronounced differences in the culture of each communities. Different memes, jokes and content creators for instance. They have different origins as well. So it isn't exactly fair to group bronies into a fandom they might not understand or have no interest in.

That isn't to say there isn't any overlap. Due to the similar interests of bronies and furries, a lot of furries tend to be bronies and bronies are sometimes also furries. For example, at least a quarter of furries also identify as bronies.

So as both a furry and a brony, I'd say that bronies aren't inherently furries.

All I can tell is, that there are other reasons why I like MLP then why I'm a furry. I just like the show because of its humor and cuteness, it's just a great option to take a bit distance from the everyday life. There could also be humans or any other animals in the show instead of ponys, and I would still like it.

The reason why I'm a furry is that I like it to put myself in the position of animals (it's not as weird as it sounds like, or maybe it is, I don't really know, it's just a long stroy :P) and the imagination of an animal with human attributes is a nice way to do so. Also I just like "crossings" between humans and animals (especially when it comes to birds, rabbits, foxes or cats). I really don't know why, I just do so... but I'm getting off the point.

But as I said, I DO know why I like MLP, and the reason for it is a completly different one.

So to make a long story short, I won't say that furrys and bronys are the same. Maybe some bronys are bronys because they are furrys or maybe some bronys consider beeing forrys because they like speaking ponys or something, but that are still two different fandoms.

Naw, they are completely different fandoms, although there is some overlap between them as others have said. You can be one without being the other.

You have to also understand, there is no general consensus what makes someone... a furry.... or a brony for that matter. I have been in both fandoms and never considered myself a "furry" nor a "brony"... I just like the fandoms and some things within them.

to put it in a terrible analogy:

furries are spicy food.

bronies are mexican food.

There is definitely some overlap, and while it may be tempting to say all mexican food is spicy food, I would like to present the tres leches cake as an example to the contrary.

And what is this tres leches cake you ask?

I don't know, this is a terrible analogy.

I have been a Brony since early 2013 and i by no means what so ever consider myself a furry at all. I don't want to be grouped into a whole other fandom i have no intrest in simply because i watch a show i like.

Bronies and furries are two completely different fandoms with two completely different purposes. A brony is a fan of FIM. A furry is a fan of the anthropomorphic concept. Lots of bronies are furries, but not all bronies are furries, and not all furries are bronies.

Hope not, or I'll be obliged to abandon the fandom. Y'know, dignity and stuff.

You're perpetuating the stereotype that furries are inherently creeps. There's nothing creepy, vile, undignified, and wrong about being a furry.

I'm not totally sure but I would say no. most bronies see themselves to be different from furries.

just btw I read some furry drama online and it's funny as hell. if I wanna a good laugh I head to FA and read some of their drama.

Well put it this way, if we didn't have my little pony the show we wouldn't have a brony fandom, there'd just be people who like animals so much they want to fuse themselves with said animals. I do personally view the two fandoms or life styles as separate things, but in the furry fandom they could be just classed as pony furries. In this fandom a furry would have a place in the story or world of mlp, since the show isn't just about ponies, we have yaks, griffons, dragons common pets, farm animals etc...

Yeah, being a furry isn't that different from being a brony. Bronies like a show outside of their intended demographic about talking cartoon horses, while furries like talking animals in general and create their own characters. There's nothing that offensive or weird about them. And neither bronies nor furries are inherently creepy or mean, from my own personal experience.

You can find a sexual component and objectionable content in both fandoms, but that's inevitable in a lot of ways because we're on the internet. Just look at all the sonic and anime fandoms. Porn is out there for those that like it, but it's not an essential part of being a furry, brony, otaku or whatever.

I think people should just layoff from harshly judging people if their interests don't cause anybody harm. :)

if we are already talking about furries I think we should mention otherkin/therians. haha they actually believe that they are dragons, wolves, foxes, big cats etc

I'm a very acceptable/tolerant person but this is just crazy.
