Ponies You Didn't Think You'd Like?

Are there any ponies from FiM that you didn't think you'd like immediately, but warmed up to later? I remember when I first got into the show and couldn't believe that Rarity was the representative of generosity. My first impression of her wasn't great, but it didn't take long before she was one of my favorite characters!

Are there any ponies you initially didn't like, but ended up loving as the show went on?

There haven't been too many characters that I've needed to warm up to over time. I think the closest thing to that for me would be Fluttershy. I didn't much care for her character at first (aside from just being adorable) as her character flaws always seemed to be a bit exaggerated in Fluttershy-centric episodes, but over the last few seasons I think she's developed quite nicely and roundly and is currently my second favorite of the mane 6.

I didn't think I was going to like Pinkie Pie - her name and appearance were just not cool. But it turns out that Pinkie is hilarious, smart, quirky and very lovable. So when it comes to first impression to over-all impression  - Pinkie was the biggest shock for me.

I never disliked her, but Rainbow Dash has really gone up in my books. At first, I found her arrogant at times, but I have started liking her a lot more. To me, she is the character who has developed the most over the course of the series. She has shown many times in the later episodes how she is ready to put her friends above anything else. I've also grown to love the show-off side of her, which still pops up occasionally – though that might have more to do with me getting to know the characters better, which always takes a few episodes.

I hate bully characters! They're one note, usually serve no purpose and can easily be written out and the episode doesn't even change (looking at you Fairly Odd Parents!)

However, after her appearance in Family Appreciation Day and especially Ponyville Confidential I loved Diamond Tiara as an antagonist. This wasn't some numskulled bully character. This is a smart antagonist (without any help from her mom thank you!!!) Anyway it's surprised me this bully character became my third favorite character.

Trix, as I didn't liked how arrogant she still acted at the end of her devut episode, but now that she's more funny and silly at times, she has grown to me a lot. Plus she's stupid sexy

Flash Sentry: I wasn't into the waifu thief bandwagon, but I felt he was inconsequential for all the hype built around him. I mean, the promos where like "LOOK, HE'S THE LOVE INTEREST FOR TWILIGHT", but he didn't bring much to the table. But the increasingly ridiculous waifu thief rants made he grow on me, now he's one of my favorite characters

Diamond Tiara and Spike. It's kinda obvious why I hated Diamond. With Spike however I used to think he was useless and cowardly but after he saved the crystal heart and got a few more episodes with development, I love him now!

Rarity at first, she seemed to me the most cliched character from any "girls show" and that made her irrelevant for me, as I kept watching the show I realized I was wrong and I am so glad I did because she's now my favorite Pony.

I disliked Rainbow Dash a lot during the first season at least, she has grown on me since then and I acknowledge she's actually a great character, she was the last mane 6 I liked and is still the mane 6 I like the least, but I still like her a lot. She has personality traits that I would probably never be able to love, but I understand that without those traits, she might have not been as authentic as she is as a character.

For the mane six, the ponies I wouldn't think I like in the first place are Applejack and Rarity. These two have got to be the most complex characters for MLP: FIM in my opinion of course.

Sure Applejack's family centric episodes can be boring, but there's also this bizarre mystery of Applejack's parents. Are they alive? Are they dead? Do they appear in the show or no? I wouldn't mind this so much if it wasn't for the fact that the show does imply plausibilities of what could've happened to Applejack's parents. Plus, Applejack's sense of Honesty is pretty subtle in nature. Is she being honest or is she lying when confronting Pinkie's suspicion on her Birthday Party celebration episode? Who knows?

As for Rarity, I really wouldn't imagine liking her despite me being neutral to her ladylike Diva-Fashionista personality. She has her moments of being a complex character e.g. Suited for Success. She does care for making the dress look good in terms of what her friends say otherwise who all have bad fashion sense even though ironically I prefer the bad fashion design cause they look cool IMO if a little gaudy XD. I don't know if Fashion is subjective. Plus, she knows Karate. Ok? How? Is there a Pony Martial Art Dojo I'm not aware of in the show?  Her Karate skills comes out of nowhere if you ask me. Also, her generosity is just as complicated as Applejack's honesty.

I'll talk about the one side character I didn't expect to like in the first place.

Still despite all this, I consider no one in the show my favorite so I'll express my indifference towards them.

Shining Armor and Cadance. At first I viewed them as token characters, and of course didn't like the fact that they appeared out of nowhere. But gradually - trough new episodes and comics - they grew on me.

Snips and Snails. Didn't like them at all initially, but after discovering the hidden talent of Snails in the buckball episode I kinda look forward to seeing them more often.

Also after the first EQG movie, I never thought Sunset would become one of my favorites either.

Same here. I really became more interested in Snails as a pony after the Buckball episode, when previously I didn't care if he got screen time or not. I wouldn't mind seeing him make more appearances now, actually.

Well, for granted, Sunny sucked as a villain, only having her looks going for her :dash:

When I first started to properly watch the episodes back in 2012-ish I was such a fan of Rainbow Dash so I probably didn't expect Rarity to end up as my favorite pony later.

I'd write out my own reply to this topic but Mirage77 pretty much just summed it up for me. Same, friend.

And a potentially interesting backstory being Celestia's former student.

I was not expecting to like Rarity.  In a lot of ways she's the most stereotypically girly of the Mane 6.  But then I got to "Dog and Pony Show"...

Anytime Rarity gets upset we get some incredible voice acting.

Before I started to watch the show, I never expected to love Pinkie as much as I do now. She's my absolutely favorite and eventually the reason I did start to watch the show. I tend to refrain from liking pink characters, since in magical girl anime that color is usually linked to "typical main character". However, this time the color is linked to happiness and I just love her so much.

After getting into the show, it's actually Rarity like many others are saying. She is the girly, perfect and fashionable diva of the show but it makes her who she is. That personality combined with being generous, it's a great fit for a possible favorite character. I always thought she would be snobby and perhaps a little rude, but she really isn't and she's slowly but surely climing up the stairs of my favorites.

Ok I'm back, and that one side character I didn't expect to appreciate would be Scootaloo.

Sure I don't like her when she looks up to Rainbow Dash which I cannot take seriously no matter how hard the show hammers up her "awesomeness of showing off", but something about her origin story fascinates me with being the only pony I could imagine that stands out because of her riding a Scooter. In a way I kinda feel sorry for this pony. It's really strange for a pegasus pony like her riding a scooter over using her own wings for flight? Why can't she fly like all the other Pegasus ponies? Is she disabled or something? Something's definitely mysterious about Scootaloo especially based on the rumor of Lauren Faust originally portraying a particular pony suffering from a physical disability of some kind. Note how I said rumor cause I don't know for sure.

Sunset Shimmer is a good one.

Let's face it, when she first appeared she was an awful villain, easily one of the series worst. But when they decided to turn her good, damn did they do a hell of a job salvaging her

Their relationship brings out the best of both characters :/

True statement indeed. But, personally I strongly dislike egotistical arrogant characters with a heart of gold and cannot take people who look up to such people seriously in the long run. Doesn't mean I have anything against them. I just don't like them because *insert reason* and wish for them not to bother me. Their ego still sticks out like a sore thumb to me it overshadows all other good traits they could possibly have with the exception of them being honest which is the only redeemable thing they have going for.

When I first started watching the show, I didn't really care much for my current favourite pony: Applejack. I even sorta disliked her at times like when she became so overprotective of Applebloom or so overly stubborn and proud. But as the show went on and I looked into each character a bit more, I grew to love Applejack. I loved each time she would sing, I loved how hardworking and responsible she is, I loved how she likes to treat her friends as family, I loved how she's an apple yet she's colored orange.. and I began to realize just why she had those quirks I mentioned in the first place.

Of course she's stubborn and works hard every day to be somepony her family could be proud of. Of course she's so protective and caring towards what's left of her family. Of course she's the level-headed and mature one who seems to have grown all too fast.

Spoiler

... What orphan wouldn't be?
