I like the simplistic design of them and the bright colours. This really makes them stand out.

Strong,colourful and dutiful appearances, characters to match, and cool powers. I know it's a bit shallow, but given that it's a visual medium appearance and spectacle is important after all.

Well the topic is about the appearance 

I probably would have problems starting to watch the show if the ponies looked like G1 or G3. I may have been able to still enjoy the story but would not been able to get into it as easily. G4 ponies look a lot like anime to me with big eyes, very expressive faces etc.

I love this question... So short and sweet!

 

It's easy, the art style! The thick vector graphics lines that made it easier to animate, and made the ponies stand out. It was a bold move to go with that design, which first showed up in the mid 90's cartoons, to be done in 2009-10!
