I've been at college for about 6 weeks now. Since I live in the dorms, I have to live with a roommate. His name is Kevin, and he's a pretty nice guy overall, but he's pretty close-minded when it comes to My Little Pony.

 

I don't talk about the show with him, or try to get him to like it. I watch My Little pony on my laptop (with my headphones in, so that Kevin can't hear it), I look at pony art, and post in pony forums. I haven't publicly displayed my love of the show to him...until now.

 

A few weeks ago, I ordered a My Little Pony poster from Ebay. It came in the mail today. The poster is pretty basic. It's a 22x26 print of a smiling Rarity, with a purple and black background. I hung it up over my desk, and thought nothing of it.

 

A little while later, my roommate walks into the room. He sets down his backpack, then looks at the poster. He stares at it for a few seconds, and says nothing. His phone starts to ring. He answers it. I can't hear the voice on the other end of the line, but I hear my roommate say,

 

"Yeah. it's still on for tonight. You can come over whenever, I guess..."

 

I see him cast a worried glance at the poster.

 

"Uh, yeah, sure. Bye." He hangs up the phone.

 

I ask him: "So you're having friends over tonight?"

 

"Yeah..."

 

"Ok."

 

Later that night, his friends come over. I had to go to my lab class that evening, so I wasn't there while his friends were in our dorm room. When I get back, my roommate's face is red, and he looks angry. (I think he might've been a little drunk too, so if his actions seem extreme, I think that's partly why)

 

"What's up?" I say.

 

He points to my poster.

 

"So...you're just gonna shove it in my face now, is that it?"

 

"Does it bother you or something?"

 

"Hell yeah, it does! It's a f****** pony!"

 

"You didn't have a problem with it earlier today..."

 

"Who WOULDN'T have a problem with it?? It's a f****** eyesore!!"

 

I shake my head in disbelief.

 

"Look...I know you're upset right now, let's not make a big deal about this. Maybe we should get some rest and--"

 

"F*** REST! Take it down, dude! It's freaking embarrassing!"

 

"I'm not taking it down, I paid 25 bucks for it! Look..did your friends make fun of you about it or something? Just tell them it's mine. And besides, there's no reason for people to laugh at it, it's just a tv show I like."

 

My roommate shakes his head and begins to laugh under his breath.

 

"What?" I say.

 

"No reason for people to laugh at it? C'mon, dude. You know it's wrong. Admit it. It's for little girls, and you don't want to admit it. I can see that."

 

"I--"

 

"Shhhhhhhhh...c'mon. I'll forget the whole thing, if you take it down right now. We can put this behind us, and--"

 

"Oh my God, dude...are you seriously...are you f****** kidding me right now? Are you really flipping out about something this trivial, this stupid, this--

 

"SHUT UP!!" Kevin yelled.

 

"That's it. I'm done. I'm leaving. F*** you." I said as I slipped out the door.

 

"Fine! Get outta here!" Kevin yelled as I left.

 

When I came back later that night, Kevin was gone. I found my poster ripped to shreds on the ground.

 

I am SO angry at him right now. He had NO right to do that! I waited a long time for that poster, and he destroyed it! I have no idea what to do. I am really, really disturbed by his reaction to my pony poster. I know he was probably drunk, but I don't know if I can continue to live with a guy that will have that extreme of a reaction to pony-related stuff. Do you think I should file a complaint to the dorm supervisor and switch roommates, or do you think I should talk to Kevin about it first? He seemed like a nice enough guy before this happened.

 

Update:

He came into our room a few minutes ago, and apologized to me. He said that the main reason he got so upset is that his friends said that they couldn't be friends with a guy who associated so closely with a "gay fag". He tried to explain that it wasn't his fault, and that he didn't choose me as his roommate, but they wouldn't listen.

 

I told him that those didn't sound like very good friends to me, but he said he didn't want to talk about it anymore, and then he went to sleep.

 

I didn't bring up the money, because he seemed tired and upset

 

my friend... my brony... I wish your roomie would understand... See thats the thing about us bronies, we have to accept the fact that people WILL scrutinize us every chance they get... All be cause we challenge a gender stereotype...

 

As to weather you should file a complaint, I would try and talk to him first... if it still continues like this, do the complaint ASAP. there is nothing worse then being criticised for what you like, whether it be ponies, pokemon, or whatever. No one should destroy your property btw... If you do end up filing the complaint, I would then promptly ask for the money for the poster. He destroyed what was yours, and in the laws eyes that is illegal.

 

 

Added note: FOR CELESTIAS SAKE, DO NOT LET THIS DETUR YOU FROM THE BRONY LIFE!

 

Nothing would break my heart more than if we were to lose one from the heard, other than the show being canceled....

Which brings me to another point... Don't let his behaviour make you think all people who are on alcohol act like that... When I drink, I get more happy, and I also tend to cry a bit more at MLP eps....

Though i also believe it's also your room so if he hung let's say a football poster and you didn't like foot ball and you didn't want to talk about it. You wouldn't tear it down in a rage. What your roommate did was vandalism. This was your property that you bought, and he went in a "drunken stupor" to damage it. The fact that he apologized to you doesn't cut it. The fact that he was worried about his reputation as a "straight man" doesn't cut it. Leaving it alone and not mandating a refund (or forcing him to pay you back the full 25-dollar share) means he gets away with it and may give him the leverage to do it again.

 

Report him with a proof of purchase like a receipt and/or e-mail (plus any possible shreds of the poster). Make sure he pays you back full. And find a new roommate. Vandalism is a crime, and he has to know that there are consequences for this.

It might be a good thing to realise some guys have most likely picked on him because he lives with guy who watches mlp. So it's understandable that he is angry. He thinks it's your fault that he is being picked on. Although the guys must be total douchebags.

 

So... I don't know what is the best thing to do, but I would ask him WHO picked up on him because of it and then confront these guys directly.

 

And then I would make them angry by simply not losing temper when they try to mock me and then make em attack me and kick their flanks in self defense.

I’d just talk to Kevin about it and apologise for maybe being a bit to in your face about it. It’s horrible what happened but I can see totally why Kevin got annoyed.

 

Maybe you should ask him to refund you on the poster, and if you get another poster talk to Kevin next time and come to a mutual agreement on where you can put it, and if he’s really not comfortable perhaps agree on a rule that nobody is allowed to put a poster up.

Wow. I just read the title and i thought "i gotta see this...." And soon as i saw the first sentence, I wanted to read it all. 1. If your roomate did that to you, leave him and report him. 2. But you can think over it again, and find some goodness in your heart. And if somepony dont like something you do, It's something they shouldn't care about! But if they destroy something that's yours, and if he's been drinking he should think twice even when he's drunk. Wow, thank you bronyponyfanatic, I'm glad that my words have touched you so. And don't worry, I will stay a brony as long as I am still interested in the show. And yes, alcohol affects people in different ways. I knew a guy who would get really sad and he would cry a lot when he was intoxicated. He didn't rage or hurt anybody, but he would rant on and on about his little brother and his family back home. Poor guy.

You need to go to your RA of the dorm hall. that is what they are there for. I suggest talking to him first about the money, if he blows it off then for sure take it to the RA. This isn't just some poster, this guy vandalized your shit and was belligerent with you. Most RA's are trained to mediate roommate disputes or at least can direct you in the right place. If worse.comes. to worse they will

reassign roommates for you.

 

Also being drunk is not an excuse to be an asshole, I have been belligerently drunk off my ass before many a time and I never broke anything, got in a fight or destroyed someones property. He is using it as an excuse for his behaviour. As well as y'all had an agreement, the room was divided down the middle, part of living in the dorms is you have to have the maturity level to realize another person lived there and may put up shit you don't want to see. I would ask for a roommate change, if this is how this guy acts when he drinks then you don't want to spend the rest of the semester with him probably, not to mention he got butthurt over a poster when you have made great efforts to be respectable to him for everything else.

Yeah, he was definitely drunk. If his actions hadn't resulted in vandalism, I can see how the conversation you had could be almost funny. The way he switches from all angry to "shh, take it down, and I will forget about it" reminds me of a time when my friend was drunk. He would go from basically yelling, then all of a sudden go dead silent, and saying shh at random intervals for the next five minutes. Anyways, that sucks that he ripped up your poster. If the money is important to you, I would pursue it, just don't do it in a hostile way. I would bring it up in the future, but don't force him to pay it back right away. If I were you, I would let him pay it back in segments.
