I'd have spent an extra $25 and get an AMD FX 4130 quad core. FX are AMD's best cpus and if you've only got a specific budget and are just looking to game, they're a good option over Intel's core i3s i5s and i7s.

I've got a pretty decent HP for $600:

AMD quad core A10 5750 2.5 Ghz turbo boost to 3.5 Ghz cpu

8 gb ram

750 gb HDD

17.5" screen 1600x900 resolution

amd radeon 8660g gpu

It's pretty good for Minecraft, WoW and plays all my steam games generally flawlessly, I play a shitload of TF2

It probably wouldn't play CoD or BF3 on anything other than low or fair, though.

I was gonna build a gaming rig last month, but I decided to get a ps4 instead.

Meh, Athlon's are still good for quad core performance at good prices. Mine's actually this exact processor here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113288 only with it's graphics card removed.

If I got the Athlon x4 750k, it's actually read to be on par with the FX 4130 or so for $20 bucks cheaper.

Besides that, it's a pretty decent computer for its price. I'd also say you mean a 17.3 inch screen at 1600 x 900 and a Radeon HD 8650G for a Gpu.

Yeah that's what I meant to say. You have the same laptop?

Nope, I just know the common specs of most laptops, since almost none with a name brand that's known will have a 17.0-2 or 17.4-9 inch laptop. :P

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit. (Install Start is Back and it runs very, very much like Windows 7)

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5 GHz

GPU: Sapphire 100358L AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition (1 GB, 128 bit, Core clock: 1,000 MHz, Mem Clock: 1,125 MHz)

PSU: Corsair TX650 650 watts

RAM: Corsair 4 GB (2 × 2) 1,600 MHz

Boot drive: Samsung 840 Pro (128 GB)

Secondary drives: Western Digital Caviar Black (3.5", 500 GB 7,200 RPM) and Seagate Barracuda (3.5", 1 TB, 7,200 RPM)

I think my computer is better than the average system, especially when you take peripherals into account (dual monitors, 5.1 surround) but I don't think of it as an unstoppable train as it won't run games like Skyrim or Borderlands 2 at max settings. But it gets the job done. I meant for this to be an all around balanced machine that can do more than just game. If I only wanted to game and stay in my price range, I would have picked up a quad core processor, spent half as much on my mobo, and cut back in other areas and spent a butt load on the gfx card. But I also render video, do some casual drawing, browse the internet, do homework, and other things on this.

Besides, balance is a good thing :)

x3 nah it's not. If it was, it'd be something like a gaming laptop of all sorts. *hug*

Still a good laptop for the price, though

I hope the OS is the big one that you'll replace.

Here's my ancient computer's specs

IBM ThinkPad T41

OS: Windows XP 2001

RAM: 512 MB

CPU: Pentium 1.6 GHz

Hard Drive: 27 GB

Graphics Card: N/A

It's so sad :P

Linux would fly on that!

Seriously? I have no experience with Linux so, I guess Linux runs well on old hardware :P

Well considering how XP is heading out the door in less than a month, now's not a bad time to start!

PM me if you want some distro suggestions.

OT: Laptop specs here.

I really need to build a gaming PC...

Lenovo C540(All-In-One)

Intel Pentium G2020(Dual Core, 2.9Ghz)

Intel HD Graphics(650Mhz-1GHz)

4GB RAM

23" 1080p HD Screen

1TB HDD

DVD-ROM/CD-ROM Drive/Burner

Windows 8 64-Bit.

It does tide me over though because I can play some stuff on it:

I planned to get a 64 bit OS first, then get a new mother board. I only got Win 8 32 bit, because it was $40, and it got rid of Vista.

  • i7-3770 (Non-K, sadly.  :( ) @3.40 GHz
  • 10 Gb DDR3 (2*4 and 1*2)
  • 1 TB HDD for all my files, and one 120 GB SSD for my OS.
  • A GeForce GT640 (Going to upgrade this when the GeForce 800 series comes out. :o )
  • Windows 8.1 Pro (Want to dualboot eOS but I can't get it to install for some reason.)

It works alright, I guess...

I don't game very much anyways.

(I wish I had a second screen though. That would make browsing so much easier! :o )

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm going to buy a gaming computer soon, so I figured I might gather some information on the thought processes behind building a serious gaming rig, and how much money I might need to invest to get a decent one. What does your current set-up look like, and how much did you pay for it?

I have a MSI GT60 0ND laptop ($1400, yeah I know), a Steelseries Rival mouse ($60) and QcK mousepad ($14), and a Logitech G930 headset ($110, normally $150.) So, all in all, about $1584, which is normally too much for a gaming setup, but... gaming laptops are expensive and I need one because I travel a lot.

I built this PC last year in September and the total cost was about $2000.

Case: HAF X

GFX Card: Asus GTX 670 Direct CUII
HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Hero
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor: Intel i7 4770K
PSU: Corsair HX850W
RAM: 2x4GB Kingston Beast
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300
120GB

How much money would you need to buy/build a good gaming computer (specifically the tower itself)? I think a budget between roughly $1500 to $2000 would be ideal if you want a very powerful PC while still getting a good value for what you spend. Roughly speaking, you might be getting less value out of a PC that's worth over $2000. But of course you don't HAVE to spend that much money; I believe you can still spend as low as $600 and still play most games on high/max settings as long as anti aliasing is turned off.

I would highly recommend building a PC rather than buying one prebuilt since you're saving some money. It's actually an easy process in my opinion but it just takes a long time; the PC I have now is the first I've ever built and I used Youtube videos as guides (specifically LinusTechTips). The process of building the PC took about 5 hours and perhaps 6-7 including the time it took to install the OS and needed drivers and softwares. If you're unsure what parts to choose for a PC, there are many builds available on the Youtube and the rest of the internets that suits to specific budgets. Just make sure those build guides are up to date.

How soon and how badly you're in need of one because 2014 is going to be a huge leap year for PC tech as with the arrival of AMD's Mantle and Direct X12, Nividia's new G-Sync chip for monitors to use, Intel is upgrading their Haswell CPU lines with Haswell E series (including 8 core cpu beasts), another line of graphics cards, and best of all is the arrival of DDR4 memory that will replace the standard DDR3 memory within a few years, this year is going to give PC's a huge leap in tech and power. Finally, wait another year and Intel will release their new line Broadwell CPUs.

As others have said, it depends on what your budget is and how many awesome stuff you want on your rig.

Holy crap! And here I am only barely able to afford a gaming PC in the $1000 price range. A rig like that must have the raw processing power of a freaking bulldozer. I can only imagine how nice it looks when it runs current-gen games.
