I do think that the probabilities are likely there, but I'm not going to take it as gospel truth. I mean because just because a planet meets the requirements for life as we know it, doesn't mean that life happened there, because what sparked life to actually begin? It's too mysterious, there's another factor involved here. A factor that could make life even less probable on any given planet.

But I'll give, with the size of the universe it probably has happened elsewhere. To think that's it happened right next door to us and we'll ever see other planets' lifeforms is a bit hard for me to believe, though.

I don't "believe" anything. I know things. Or don't. Extraterrestrial life has never been proven to exist and that's as much as I can say on the matter, in terms of facts. However, that we've only explored a small portion of a vast, endless universe, I do think that there's a possibility that extraterrestrial life could exist. Especially since we have discovered planets that could feasibly support life, it's definitely possible. However, I won't say that I believe it until I see some proof, and I won't rule out the possibility entirely until we've observed more of the universe.

Yes the chances of extraterrestial life are essentially 100%.

Everybody focuses on intelligent life but I've been thinking about it a lot and I think intelligence is just an overrated trend that can't really last long. I'd say that most life in the universe is nonintelligent, like swarms of robotic insects eating their way across the universe. Think the replicators from Stargate SG1.

I do, yes. With how big the universe is, the mathematical odds of life existing is high. Although this life may not necessarily be intelligent, it is still life. Anyways, every thread about extraterrestrials needs a good crazy-alien-guy-meme.

Sure, there could be more life out there. I may think that there could be, but if there was it's absolutely nowhere near as intelligent as we are.

It wouldn't be like "aliens" that we would think of. It would probably just be some type of bacteria or something. xD

I believe.

It's not the first time I've seen this question rise up in a forum. I'll use the same argument I always do:

If we could scale the universe down to the size of this screen, the Earth wouldn't be visible because it is far too small. I think it is very close-minded for a person to argue that we are the only form of life in the universe.

Our sun is considered an "average" star. Our planet Earth happens to be in the Goldilocks zone (the right distance away from the sun, not too far or close) so sustaining life here is possible. Perhaps if Venus possessed an atmosphere that wasn't entirely greenhouse gases and was farther away, it could actually be capable of sustaining life. Our best chances of locating life are in one of Jupiter's moons, Europa, where it is possible that under its surface (?) exists liquid water, which is what keeps us wondering if life could exist there. I'm not into the whole "all life forms need water to live" since there could be some extraterrestrial species that thrives not on water, but some other substance that we might normally find hostile.

There are an unimaginable number of galaxies, stars, and planets in the observable universe, with an unknown ammount of things that are too far away to see. We are literally a spec of dust compared to the massiveness of space. I think that if something as amazing as Earth happened once, it can happen again somewhere else.

Your argument is invalid.

Maybe, I cant say yes! because I don't know.

I cant say no! because once more I don't know.

If there are aliens, well I sure hope they are friendly and loving, and make sure to stay way from most guys..

We also only know how life started on our planet. Life might be able to form in different ways than just the whole primorial soup route, resulting in lifeforms unlike anything we could even imagine Also read one or two things that mention some of the ingredients that sparked life here aren't even from this system. All life on earth could be 'alien'  for all we know.

Yeah, I believe in aliens. Our planet has life on it, what says that there isn't another one out there as well that has life. Of course you can't be sure, I can't say they exist but I can't say they don't since the universe is so big. There might even be many planets that look the same, just saying there are so many possibilities. So I believe that there might be some out there, whether they are as advanced as us or even more advance then us there is no way telling. But don't forget that there are some creatures on earth that can live in very harsh conditions so it's very likely that somewhere out there in the universe there is another creature thinking about the same question.

It seems unlikely that aliens don't exist, considering the size of the universe. I'm not sure if they're close enough or if technology is going to be advanced enough to communicate with them any time soon.

I would say I definitely believe in aliens, but I don't believe in the kind of aliens that most people would think of. Most places in the universe don't have the properties to support life, and even if they do it would only be very small life.

I would say that there is definitely aliens somewhere on this universe, but they are probably some sort of bacteria or single-celled organism, not a fully grown and functional life form with the same capabilities and technology as humans.

And even if aliens don't exist today, I believe that they did exist at some point, or will exist in the future. It is pretty possible that they could've only lived for a short time and then died.

As I was told by one of my former teachers "It is selfish of us to think we are the only beings out there". I do believe there is something else out there, for no reason other than why would we be the only things in this universe of ours?

  • 4 months later...

Im curious to see how many of you believe in life existing beyond our planet and or if we'll ever discover it.

Personally, I do I think life exists beyond earth.

If you'd ask me, there is just too much out there to have us be the only life in existence.

I also believe that if we stay in existence long enough, we'll actually come across other life.

The after life....

Currently, since I was an athiest, I'm not fully confirmed on what I should understand, for the most part, I do believe we just come across another experience similar to life, but in a different way.

I could be wrong, but that's my temporary theory for now.

I agree that there is a strong possibility, but I am waiting for more evidence.

Considering we can look 13.6 billion light-years in any direction, and even that's not all that's out there, I find it highly unlikely that we're alone. There's an amount of space out there literally incomprehensible to the human mind; there's no way the entire thing's just empty, lifeless void.

And in terms of life beyond us, I don't really think we'll find them, so much as they'll find us. I mean, we've been blasting radio junk out into space for a while now; several nearby stars have likely already heard it. Now, whether they like what they hear is a different matter entirely...

Indeed.

I'm sure there's life outside of earth

I'm not sure if we'll ever discover it though

and I don't much think about it outside of that

aliens have never much interested me, for some reason

Definitely basic lifeforms like microbes and the like. Intelligent life is more of a crapshoot, but the universe is damn large. So a few instances of it must pop up every now and again. Will we ever contact them? Who knows. Because the universe is so big (as much of a curse as it is a blessing), until science shows us a way to go out of our galaxy quickly we'll probably never find them.

As for does life exist out there -- sure bacteria is likely all over the place.  Will we find it?  If the mission we send to burrow under the ice of Europa doesn't then we may have quite the wait for a ship to find another solar system.

Does intelligent life exist out there -- this is a harder question and one that can be contemplated in geological time.  We exist and we have come close to wiping ourselves out.  We also are very near the end of the period that the earth will remain in the habitable zone and a lot of really weird things happened during our planet's existence to stress life to get to our level of development.  Hence I think intelligent life is rare.

At the same time we already have the ability to send probes to other systems if we decided we wanted to use nuclear to do it.  Regardless though, it will be at most a couple of hundred years before we reach a point where we can send a probe to other systems in a reasonable number of decades.  If you iterate that and figure in improvements you are looking at a time to at least map the galaxy at most in the tens of thousands of years.  Compared to the billions of years that the planets have been there, it is a tiny fraction of the available time.  Hence it is very likely that IF intelligent life existed in the galaxy that it would have colonized us by now.  Since that has not happened, and the time to do so is a very short period by geological time, it is reasonable to conclude that there is not such a civilization in this galaxy.

Has there been intelligent life in the galaxy?  Now that one I would say is FAR more likely.  I think the vast majority of intelligent creatures will either destroy themselves, or be destroyed by outside forces.  In essence I think searching the galaxy for life is going to be an archaeology exercise.  We will find the remnants of civilizations, but nothing really to talk to.

However I do think intelligent life is out there amongst the other galaxies or other dimensional states.  It is also in the past and the future if one decides to wait long enough for it to develop or if one figures out time travel.  Which method of contacting such is most feasible is left to conjecture.

Well there are probably a bunch of tiny single cell organisms living on exoplanets out there.

Not your typical movie star alien from men in black, but midget cells that are considered life

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space. ~Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

It would be fairly closed minded to think in the insane mind-boggling scope of space that we're the only sentient or even the most advanced life forms. There are planets in habitable zones out there that we haven't checked out yet simply because they're too distant and we haven't reached warp speeds yet to check them out. Such is the nature of space.

Yes and yes. I believe that there is more than earth creatures in existance. There are plenty of planets and galaxies so I bet we will at least find bacteria and microrganisms at the least.
