Words you cannot pronounce properly?

Mr F

Recommended Posts

There is one word in my native Finnish that I (and countless other Finns) have serious problems with:
"Epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkkäänköhän".
And yes, it's an actual word, and as far as I know, it doesn't translate out to anything.
I've been trying to get my tongue around this word for years now, and it hasn't gotten any easier.

Well after all this time I found another one....

I cannot say Ingeniør. (engineer)

I say it ing-e-N-ør, (It sounds drunk)

It is ironically what I want to be. KUbAnTY.png

Pretty much anything in any language other than English. Hell, I can barely speak English correctly. The word I probably pronounce the worst is "particularly". To me, it just sounds like it has one too many syllables.

I can't pronounce R's in certain words.  They end up as W's.  xD  I guess a lot of people face this problem though.

I remember my teacher talking about not being able to pronounce certain words and writing the very word I have the most trouble with pronounced on the white board.  I think I sunk in my seat a little.  And then, he asked me.

"Do you have trouble pronouncing any words?"

"Uh...the...word you wrote on the board."

"See?  She's American and even she can't pronounce it."

Wait, what does that have to do with anything?

Anyway, long story short, I can't pronounce the word Rock.

Cordial... Yes, I said fucking Cordial.

I end up pronouncing it as Cord-i-qual. Don't ask, I really don't know, and it's just odd...

I can't help it, and trying to say it, just... The fuck...

I have trouble pronouncing words that have "th" and "s" too close together. Words like Fiths, Paths, and especially Thesaurus, I have trouble saying them properly. Having a "Th" and an "s" so close to each other so cruel to me. Paths comes out like pazz, fiths comes out like fiss, and thesaurus comes out as some unholy new trainwreck of a word that makes me sound like Sylvester the cat with a speech impediment. I don't know why it gives me so much trouble.

1. "Striped"

I don't always pay attention to the pronounciations of words, so it just comes out, "Stripe- ed"

2. "Comfortable"

It always comes out, "Com-fort able", not "Comftorble"

I meant to spell it wrong, to show what I was saying.

com-fort-a-ble is actually the correct pronunciation.

Well I cannot say "sixth" for the life of me. It always comes out like "sixtshthpthbt" or sometimes "six-ith"

Abominable gets me every time. I always pronounce it Ab-nonimable. ._.

It's really annoying. Someone I know pronounces 'cinnamon' as 'synonym' though, which is much more amusing. :P

"Three."

I say it "Free."

One, two, free, four, five...

eleven, twelve, firteen...

When I get to the thirties, it's a nightmare

I caught a lot of hell for that when I was little. Don't catch any problems for it now, though. :D

I don't have problems pronouncing words all that often (either that or I don't notice that I'm saying them wierdly.)

I have more of a problem with spelling words like dissapointed or congratulations.

For the longest time I've had issued saying "Specific". But the most troublesome words I've ever encountered together has to be "edited it." ex. "Ya, I had some mistakes on that paper so I had to edited it." Sounds so funky!

I have a fairly thick Canadian accent whenever I speak German, a faint Canadian accent when I speak Japanese, and a faint Japanese accent when I speak Mandarin. I can't pronounce Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz or Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft, mostly because I quit trying about halfway through. I quit trying to learn Gaelic because I always butchered the pronunciation.

There aren't any words I can't pronounce "properly." Although my southern accent, which I've done my best to eliminate, has a tendency to come forth uncontrollably when pronouncing certain syllables. The "er" sound and whenever "i" is sandwiched between any two consonants, I can't help it. Some people may consider that mispronunciation.

I can't say wednesday at all I literally say it wed nes day.

I have no idea why, maybe because I can't spell it as well which doesn't help ><!

I pronounce it that way too, but it's deliberate.

"Naked"... honestly to this very day I don't know if I'm saying it right or wrong because I've heard it spoken both "nay-kid" and "neckid" and no matter WHICH way I say it, it's apparently wrong. KUbAnTY.png

Everyone always teases me on the way I say 'onion'. When I was just a bit younger, I used to say 'ung-yun'. Now I've dropped the g, but it still kinda has that Minnesota accent to it, making it sound like 'un-yun'. I sometimes give my mom a hard time about her way of saying 'un', as in 'unpack'. She says 'on' instead." xD

EDIT: Since I've been learning Italian, here's a few words that trouble me (and their translation).

Sbava: Drools

Ascoltando: Listening

Disegnavo: Drew

Consiglio: Advise

Direttamente: Directly

Inghilterra: England

In my youth, the word "cinnamon" was rather difficult to pronounce. Other than that, I can't think of many other specific words. When I'm reading out loud, I mess up word pronunciations all the time, but nothing specific off the top of my head.

I used to have a problem with the word "adjective". I would always pronounce it "ad-jeCK-tive", with emphasis on the ck sound. I don't really do it any more, though, but there are quite a few French words I can't pronounce properly.

I can't pronounce any words that start with Thr such as through, three, throat and throw etc. and instead I say them with a very hard F sound instead.

There's something about the way you're supposed to put you tongue between your teeth and make the 'Thr' sound that I just can't do, it feels really unnatural and takes me a long moment to actually do it and even then I have to try really hard.

I didn't know how to pronounce chasm. Since it has that Ch sound, I had always said it like that which would be: Chaz-im. I just recently found out that it is pronounced "kaz-uh" which is what Dictionary.com says.
