Gilda the Griffon: Your Opinion on her Past and Future in MLP

I don´t really like her as a character. She is just a bully and nothing more. She has no personality outside of that. Just like King Sombra is just evil and nothing more.

But I think that she could probably have another episode which could improve her as a character, and explain how she became friends with Rainbow Dash (since RD didn´t really like bullies in Cutie Mark Chronicles). And also we could learn more about Griffins.

Head Canon Regarding Gilda

Gilda is bullied as a junior because she's the only griffon for awhile around. Judging by those dumb bullies in Sonic Rainboom, this is not a far fetched opinion to make.

Dash and Gilda become friends through Flight School. Gilda develops current personality through years of putting up with BS.

Dash had friends to make her a better pony. Gilda doesn't care enough to make any other friends.

Her behavior in the episode was mostly her fault. Unlike Trixie, who's character arc I believe should be about taking real pride in her abilities and getting back to whatever pony she was before years of boasting made her arrogant, Gilda's (if she had one) would probably be simpler: truly feeling sorry for her actions and being less rigid about being "cool".

After seeing all your guys's awesome essays on the matter, I feel inadequate.

Speaking of Trixie, in the Crystal heart, Trixie and Gilda appear out if nowhere in the book! And Gilda doesn't act ANYTHING like herself in the cartoon.

 

Will that change Gilda's personality?

Well, Trixie and Gilda prank other ponies. That's all I know. It makes NO sense as to why Gilda came back. They are treating it as if Gilda comes back several times, and we aren't told about it.

Lately I've been thinking, should gilda come back? I have seen so much gilda hate, its not even funny. I know most of the hate is because she roared at fluttershy, I say get over it. Before you all kill me for saying that, at least give me a good reason why she shouldn't be given a chance at redemption.

No them not wanting her to be redeemed doesnt equal not wanting her to return, take sombra for exsample, most bronies want him to return to fulfil his potential but nobody wants him to redeem

Well everyone deserves a second chance, but with Gilda it seems as if the problem is more of her personality, and those usually don't change. I mean just watch the episode, she can sit there and basically be a bully, but once vise versa she gets all mad and leaves. I wouldn't mind seeing her come back, but not if she is going to be the same as the last time.

Most characters should be given a second chance, I mean look at trixie, she was hated just as much as gilda, but when she stared in season 3, she was given a new appreciation through the fandom!

Don't really know WHAT could she do if she comes back though, but it does sound like a good idea.

Normally, I'd be all for second chances. However, Gilda has shown not just rudeness or unkindness, she has shown utter contempt for everyone who isn't her (and Rainbow Dash). Basically, she has the opinion that she is the one who ultimately decides who is or isn't fit to be around her. That's where the problem lies.

 

Keep in mind, I haven't seen the second Trixie episode, but in Trixie's first episode, she was undone by her own words, not anything she actually did, while the two ponies truly responsible for the problems of the episode got a lot less punishment than she did. With Gilda, she was entirely responsible for the episode's conflict, and she was undone by her own actions. That's the big difference between Trixie and Gilda. Well, that and Trixie is a "love to hate" villain, while Gilda is just a bully.

I covered Trixie, but one huge difference between Gilda and Discord is that Gilda already had a friend, one who she basically put on a false fase in front of and pretended to be someone other than she was. Discord needed a friend, but Gilda was only nice around Rainbow Dash, and reverted to bully mode when she wasn't around. That's not someone who needs a friend, that's someone who needs to be ignored, or at the very least, held under extreme suspicion.

Ey, but Trixie wasn't friends with any of the mane 6, but she eventually realized that what she was doing was wrong and asked for forgiveness, and that was pretty much the same with Discord (Though yes I know he became a friend of fluttershy). BUT Gilda got mad at RD because she wasn't "cool" anymore and slammed the door in her face and flew off. I just honestly don't see how her coming back will do much good, but hey, I guess anything is possible.

Gilda could be an antagonistic character who returns, I don't see why that's a problem. After all, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are pretty much bullies, and they return all the time. Admittedly, I'd only want Gilda to return if it didn't feel forced and they had a good plot and reason for her to come back, but I think her coming back in a hostile mood to the Mane Six and others would be just fine. Not to say her becoming nicer is something I'm against, but I don't think that should be the condition for her coming back.

Motherbucking this. I don't get this whole Redeeming villains thing. Its takes away their purpose. I was very disappointed in Trixie for apologizing in the end of Magic Duel. Gilda and Lighting Dust and Prince Blueblood should not be reformed

I sometimes like redeeming villains, but in this case I don't think that should be the reason for a villain to come back. Villains coming back, for example reoccurring villains, is a common thing in all fiction, so I don't see why a character like Gilda, Lightning Dust, the Flim Flam Brothers, or even Blueblood coming back would be such a bad or "fanservicey" thing. I know a lot of Bronies were crying fanservice when the plot of Magic Duel was revealed, although afterwards it was further revealed that the plot for that episode was written a long time ago.

 

Overall, what I'm trying to say is that I love heroes and good guys, but good antagonists are always nice since they drum up conflict and disrupt the natural order of things. I think characters like Gilda, Lightning Dust, and others can make a comeback and still be antagonistic. I don't see what the issue here is about that.

 

A little off-topic, but about Magic Duel: I'm okay with the ending. I really am. But I don't think becoming a good guy should be the deciding factor in whether or not an antagonist returns. It's certainly not the reason Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are always coming back...

I know what you mean, but personally I want to see things from her perspective. Like what happened after her fight with rainbow, or how they met. Even villans get character development sometimes. I think everyone is judging her too quicky, based off one appearance. If the first episode you watched of mlp was dragonshy wouldn't you think rainbow was a jerk too? I think she should have more screentime before everyone starts putting her in the jerk category.

I think they should show antagonists like Gilda, Lightning Dust, Trixie etc. without trying to make them "reformed" Much like they did with Discord. While i would like the addition of new villain i don't want the other antagonists to be shown for a few minutes and thrown away after one episode. 

 

Maybe a episode where Lighting Dust and Gilda meet with each other and become BFF's due to their similar personalities. They could make a devious pair of trouble makers and way better antagonists than Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon could ever be.

Actually, if I saw Dragonshy and that was my only impression of Rainbow Dash, I would love her probably just as much as I do now. I love characters that can be jerks sometimes. Just call a personality trait that I find endearing in fiction.

 

Overall, I do want Gilda to appear again, and I want her to develop if she does. However, I don't see why she absolutely has to turn around and be nice to appear again in some fans eyes.

The way I see it, I'm not sure about Gilda.

If she came back, I'd hope the Mane 6 would at least try to be nice, and, if that doesn't work, drive her away after teaching her a lesson or two.

Let me preface this with a little background:
 

• I loved the idea of Gilda
• I thought the episode taught an important lesson: just because someone's your friend doesn't mean you can't disagree with them and stand up to them. I wish I had known that a few years ago.
• She's one of two griffins that have ever appeared in the show, though I'm probably mistaken on this.
• She gets booted after her episode and is never seen again.

i have a question. Why is she in only one episode? I mean, we've seen the redemption of Nightmare Moon, the (somewhat) redemption of Trixie, the redemption of Discord. So why not Gilda? I mean, it seems kind of harsh is all.

I suppose she could pop up in season 4, though for some reason I'm kind of skeptical about that.

I too would like to see Gilda again. I love it when antagonists are reformed and Gilda is no exception. I loved her design, but I hope they go more in-depth into her character and flesh her out a bit more. ]

 

So no, you're not the only one. I find it unfair that Trixie got another episode, but Gilda gets nothing.
