What is the significance of the title "My Little Pony", on the current show?

I know that the title has been stuck as "My Little Pony", instead of some other, but what is the value of "My" in the title, since Equestria has virtually no humans (unlike G1)?

Is it now that girls have some role models in the ponies/main characters? Or is it something else in the value of the "My" part, since it may suggest Humans valuing the ponies (although they are absent in the main setting)?

Keep in mind the name was in reference to a toy line first and foremost, before they ever considered turning it into a t.v. show in the 80s. It was a marketing gimmick meant to evoke ownership and desire in little girls.

That's the way it's always been. It doesn't quite roll off the tongue very nicely if we just say, "Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". It would just throw it off course, if that makes sense? >.<

Since G1 consisted of humans and ponies, its always been that way.

If they were to change the title, it wouldn't be part of the franchise (So I think!). It would just be another pony show inspired by My Little Pony.

Don't forget that the ponies actually say that in the show... I know for sure that Twilight has referred to the CMCs (Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Bell) as "my little ponies" ...

And Celestia has referred to the mane six as "my little ponies" at least once for sure.  Probably multiple times.  But in answer to your question, OP, the "My" doesn't have any significance in the context of FIM.  It's just the brand name.  But I like the sound of it, so...

it makes me cringe everytime i hear it,since i always have to think of the horrifiying images of the past-gen cartoons i used to see in the ads when i was a kid.

I´d rather just call it Friendship is Magic" or "FiM".

anyways, "My Little Pony" is the name of Product that Hasbro is trying to sell using this show as advertisement for it,basically.

The Halo game series doesn't have anything to do with Halos anymore yet it's still called that.

It's just what the series is called, whether its relevant or not. Why change it and then lose the brand identity you built up?

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, the brand is called "My Little Pony", so it has to stick with the name regardless of what the series does.

And don't forget that "my" also shows ownership over something as well, and though Celestia doesn't necessarily "own" the ponies, she still rules over them and they are still technically her subjects, and on top of that she has called the mane 6 "My little ponies" before, so think of it this way instead, "My little ponies of Equestria" Make sense? She rules over Equestria, and has HER "subjects" then intern the word "my" can be applied.

The "my" in the title does't have any special significance in the context of the show. The only reason it's there is because the show promotes the brand "My Little Pony"

The phrase "My little pony" has been used several times within the series as a term of endearment. Cheerilee and Twilight both used "My little ponies" in addressing the CMC.

You're lucky. The original brand name was actually "My Pretty Pony". It was the first thing Hasbro changed when they acquired the rights from Bonnie back in the 80's.

It is just there because it rolls off the tongue, it was a really snappy marketable phrase during G1 and it still it today. There aren't any humans in G4 but there also really isn't any reason to change the name because the phrase "if it is not broke don't fix it" comes to mind at least for the name. What exactly would you call it other than My Little Pony?

Marketing 101 :okiedokielokie:

Unfortunately even though the new show is A LOT different than it used to be, it's still promoting (and funded by) the My Little Pony toy line.

Well I guess it's not that unfortunate. Faust ONLY got involved BECAUSE they were her favorite toys as a kid. She's generally wary about animation for toys since it usually isn't very good.

Another thing I find funny is that the Mane 6 aren't exactly "little". Although I don't hate the CMC or anything, if the Mane 6 where CMC age and were like them I probably wouldn't watch the show.

Rainbow Rocks... at least how it could've looked... in a stranger, more interesting dimension

For those who are wondering, Twilight is chewing bubble gum.

Other than the obvious, another nice way to interpret the "my" in the title is in the strength of the ensemble. There are so many diverse and likable characters in the show that there's pretty much one for everyone, hence, "my" little pony.

I know about the marketing background of the name and the franchise history, but this new meaning should reflect how G4 made My Little Pony into a character-driven franchise and represent the connection between the MLP media and its audience.
