Any Pony Took Band Back In High School?

Psh... Not just in high school!

I plated trumpet from 5th grade through 12th!

(And, yeah, I know... we are/were the annoying one's of band, hahaha).

Our band had ~40 kids, give or take, in high school.  And, when I was an upperclassmen, the trumpet section was meek, with only like 6 players.  Now, some might say "LOL six out of forty is enough trumpets" buuut oh no, you see, 4 of the six were shy players.  Basically, my senior year, it was myself and my good friend [whom we'll fakely just name "Billy" for the sake of his anonymity]... that we're the loud ones.  "Billy" and I basically pulled the trumpet section.  Oddly enough, we (he and I) were still looked at by the woodwinds with faces that said *would you ease up on the damn volume, trumpets?* lol.

I miss band.  It's been too long.  Marching, Pep, and Concert band, all the same.

I also miss drama/theatre (plays).  Seems like band geeks and theatre geeks were all one in the same [kind of people].

You should have seen my high school's marching band. There's probably 120 or so kids in it. A good 30 of them are trumpet players alone. Half the band alone was brass players. Thing is, though, the band in general had so much presence, just so much power. It still does. Here's what I mean:

Believe me, I've been out of the loop for 2 years now, since graduating. I miss it so much, because we did some cool shows. There was Beatles music (Eleanor Rigby, Can't Buy Me Love, Hey Jude), Chicago (Make Me Smile, 25 Or 6 To 4, Hard To Say I'm Sorry), a "Fire" show (We Didn't Start The Fire, House of the Rising Sun, Let's Groove), a "Sun" Show (Walking on Sunshine, Aquarius, House of the Rising Sun), and so many more. We have a nationally recognized March Show, full of classic marches, spanning over 50 years now. We are also one of the last "Big 10" marching bands left in the country. The band itself is nationally recognized for our outstanding efforts. And come on, how can you not be great when you are billed as "THEE award winning North Hills High School Fighting Indian Marching Band, THEE band of Pride, Tradition, and Excellence?"

Edit: Best part is I ended up arranging the music for most of those shows. Reason being: I'm the only one who knows how to do it.

I was in band for twelve years straight! I miss it, but when I left college a year and a half ago I ended up choosing the community orchestra instead of band. Although I could probably get back into my community college's band again if I wanted to, it would be a bit too much on my night work schedule.

Perhaps oddly enough only two of those years I was in marching band. Lol. My junior and senior year of high school. I'd love to do marching band again, but... I have to be honest with myself... With my medical issues I probably shouldn't. In fact, I'd probably have to drop out immediately. *sigh* Can't complain about the time I had in marching band in high school, though. It was a dream. I know that nothing could even possibly compare to what I experienced aside from DCI, anyway.

And how exactly did you regret your decision by stopping as you went to college?

I thought maybe you could have carried it on into college and played in the band there.

Yes my friend, Having to rehearse out in 90+ degree weather that was the only thing I hated about high school band, But it was all fun in the end though.

Indeed! Although thankfully my university has an indoor facility (the bubble, we call it) that we rehearsed inside all the time... U jelly :umad:?

I'm jealous of the music you played... lol.

We [throughout the years] played songs such as (and this is not organized to say from what year, or whether it was from marching, pep, or concert):

Jump - Van Halen; The Hey Song; The Cupid Shuffle; On The Warpath; Fireworks - Katy Perry; Exaltation; The Dancing Queen - ABBA...

Plenty more than that, but... my brain has too many things running at once right now and I'm drawing blanks on the other songs, lol.

LOL, our high school was small.  I mean, my town was small!  Population of ~2500 people, and a high school of ~230 kids, and my grad class was like 43 kids.  But, wanna know something cool about some similarities between our high schools?

"Tradition" and "Pride" were also big for us, too.  And, even better, our mascot was also an Indian!

I don't know if you are familiar where I'm from at all, but I hail from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My high school has I think roughly 1000 kids. My graduating class was 350 or so. For years, I lobbied for a metal/rock show. At one point, we were thinking about playing Renegade, by Styx. Man, now I really want to go pick up my horn again. No, we've played Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, fun., Beatles, Neil Diamond, Christina Aguilera, Billy Joel, Elton John, and so many other fun things.

Heck yeah! I've been in band since the 5th grade. I started off on the clarinet and played that until 8th grade. I've played trombone ever since and now I am a Sophomore in college. I've been in marching band, jazz band, show choir band, and concert band!

Super band geek right here.

I really enjoyed going to marching band competitions and performing at halftime at the football games. That was probably one of the greatest things about high school!

Love, love, love it.

Yep, from 7th Grade all the way through High School, surprisingly a lot more fun than I thought it would be

And people outside of band say it's boring... They just don't understand.

If you could logically call it a band, yes I did. I played an alto sax from 7th grade to graduation ultimately.

We didn't do any football games though. Sadly, the music program in our school district was pretty pathetic technically speaking. Most students who took the class really only went there to socialize and hang out. Though the teacher (and through all grades I had the same teacher too so XD) did try her best to get the class to do what it should have done, ultimately in the end she gave up and the band pretty much became no more after I graduated.

As for me, well, I was one of the few kids who actually did what he was supposed to do. And, for that matter, I even applied the knowledge elsewhere and essentially improved my ability to compose music. So in this aspect, the class proved beneficial to me.

Yes that counts because you're actually taking that subject

No, it's not a subject. I'm in a literal band. One of the ones that can get signed off to a record label.

My situation in high school was quite strange. I went to a vocational technical high school so it didn't have a music or arts program whatsoever. I still ended up in a marching band for my 4 years of high school. I went to my hometown's high school band which was open to me joining. I played trumpet for the first year then moved to the baritone horn for the next 3. I enjoyed every minute of it, even though my band was very small, we were around 15 - 20 throughout my sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Not in high school, but in middle school I did! :D  ...For less than half a semester, anyways. :please:

So many things went wrong. I missed the sign up day and ended up stuck with being a trombone player, the place was setting off my allergies something fierce (tears and all, and in middle school, kids won't stop giving you crap about that kind of thing!), and I was sitting next to a bully who kept stealing my sheet music and threatening me (this was the kind of bully who would sneak in pocket knives to school and was practically a juvenile criminal waiting to happen). Point is, I couldn't stand it there. It was a bit childish of me back then, but I was NOT going to go back to that. I wanted out, and I convinced the vise principal to set up a study hall period for me to go to instead. The best part is, it was held by my favorite teacher at the time! She had sweets, computers with games, and her lesson plans were always fun! :yay:

...These day, I do wonder about the road less traveled from time to time (not much though). I never got to be part of a band class, but it's probably for the better. I'd rather be part of a garage band, honestly. And maybe one day I'll learn to play an instrument of MY choice, on my own time of course. I might take guitar lessons some day, or maybe learn to play the shamisen...
