Weird fandom things I want explained

Mysterycat

Recommended Posts

Okay, the fandom does weird stuff. I am a pegasister, but a sane one (no offence). Here is what I want to be explained.

  1. Why do some people call flanks "plots"? I don't clop but I did find one nasty clop fic by mistake which referred to Zecora's flank as her "plot", and later I heard someone call Fluttershy's flank her "plot". I have looked the word "plot" up in the dictionary and have not found any reference to it being used as a word for butt or flank, so is it an MLP thing? What's the origin?
  2. Why do people think Derpy is Dinky's mother because they went to the Sisterhooves Social? Wouldn't it make more sense for Derpy to be Dinky's friend, cousin or sister?
  3. Why do people take it for granted that Lyra likes humans when there was no evidence of it in the show?
  4. Why do people ship Fluttershy with Discord?

1. I thought it was a term for a pony butt? As far as i know it is just an MLP thing. Don't know the origin, people make up words all the time for their interests, fetishes and dislikes.

2. I dunno.. just headcanon I suppose. No different than anything else in the headcanon department.

3. I guess because it sounds good. How she would know what a human even is is a mystery... although I suppose you could argue they are in mythological books ponies have the same way we have unicorns in ours.

4. Because they just see it as logical in some fashion, have too much time on their hands or just really find the idea a turn on I suppose. Could be any number of reasons honestly. Why do some of the more odd ships out there exist... only the shippers know the answer to that.

1. According to an old post on this forum the plot thing came from a meme. It was a joke like the old "I buy adult magazines for the articles." They watch the show for the "plot."

2. I think the Derpy/Dinky thing is just because they look similar. I prefer the idea of them being sisters more than them being mother and daughter.

3. Lyra's thing with hands is another meme. She sat on a bench like a human in an episode so the idea that she was somehow obsessed with humans was born. Something like that anyway.

4. I don't know why people ship Fluttershy and Discord, but it's probably similar to why I like to ship her with King Sombra. I like King Sombra, the art is cute in my favorite comic of the two of them and the pairing makes me laugh.

At the end of the day it's just people having fun.

Why do people take it for granted that Lyra likes humans when there was no evidence of it in the show?

If I recall correctly, Lyra supposedly being obsessed with humans has something to do with the way she was sitting on a bench in an early episode (which I think is Dragonshy, but not sure). She sits on the bench in the same way a human would, with her hind legs hanging over the side, while Bon Bon, who is seated next to her, is sorta laying on it.

The fandom apparently construed this to mean that Lyra is well-aware of the existence of humans and strives to be like them.

The fandom likes to assume that those examples you provided are true, and have constantly embraced them as fact even though the show never confirms any of them. At the end of the day, the fans are just having fun and enjoy expanding on things they know will never be acknowledged as such by the writers. Although, that last one between Fluttershy and Discord might become a reality but that's a very thin possibility.

4. Why do people ship Fluttershy with Discord?

They hugging, Fluttershy accepted Discord first from Mane six, The way Discord act towards Flutters compared to other ponies, Their friendship. <- there is few reasons. Remember that we are talking about Fandom that ships characters because they stand next to each other.

Plot=butt is one of those things that slowly evolved over time. "I watch it for the plot." was a video-revision of the old "I read it for the articles" sarcastic statement made about Playboy magazines and the like. The revised version was used a lot in the anime fandom due to the high amount of fanservice content in a lot of anime.

There's an old Monty Python skit that's part of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail film where a father is trying to convince his son to marry in order to get the dowry of farmland instead of the swamp they're currently living in. In describing the prospective bride, the father says she's got huuuuuuge.... tracts of land. Monty Python is a favourite amongst most nerd fandoms, so the euphemism caught on. A tract of land is also known as a 'plot' in surveyors terms in North America (and possibly elsewhere, I don't know), so "I watch it for the plot" merged with this euphemism and produced a lot of meme images with anime girls with "plot" written across censor bars over their breasts.

The meme transitioned from anime fandom to bronies, but given that ponies aren't shaped like humans the only thing that translated was the show's odd tendency to put some character's butts front and center of the screen. So a bunch of meme gifs were made with "I watch it for the plot" with pony butts, and the term 'plot' shifted along with it.

Everything I was going to say has already been said by others.  You snooze, you lose.  I will add that I've seen braille editions of Playboy, so some people really DO read it for the articles.

As to "plot", Louis Armstrong 1st said it about why he played Jazz.  "If you have to ask the question, you wouldn't understand the answer"

I've been very confused about the whole "plot" thing too. I was doing a short story unit in English class and typed in "Plot", to find plot diagrams and got a subcategory of that MLP stuff at the top. I'm not too sure about 2 and 4, but I think the whole Lyra being obsessed with humans was just something that was made up by the fandom. She doesn't ever say anything, so it would make sense to choose her to make up some type of trait like that.

  1. Why do people ship Fluttershy with Discord?

The other three points have been addressed well enough already but I do have something to add on this one. Shipping is largely based on "feeling" character dynamics in a way, and it's based on what kind of chemistry you're receptive towards. For example, a lot of people like "opposites attract" and see sexual tension in things like Rarity and Applejack bickering, while others - like myself - are more inclined to ship characters based on similarities and affectionate gestures. I think a lot of people base the Discord/Fluttershy ship on Discord's particular fondness towards Fluttershy, and I would also hazard a guess that they're fond of the whole idea of "changing" a "bad guy." I don't really get it, but those shippers see things in that dynamic which imply romance and are willing to get over the issues with that, i.e. Discord being a total jerk.

3. Why do people take it for granted that Lyra likes humans when there was no evidence of it in the show?

friends_by_binaryninj4-d3bzvxe.png

This is a vector of a background element in Season 1 Episode 7.

People interpreted Lyra trying to be a humanoid with her sitting posture. Five years of fans being dim and splendorous about the things they enjoyed conflated that interpretation into an entire characterization.

4. Why do people ship Fluttershy with Discord?

People began to assume something must've been going on between Discord and Fluttershy ever since their first encounter with each other (S2E2) lead Discord to realize she was genuinely so kind that she was immune to his temptations to vitrify her flaw. (Turn her gray.) Which is to say by some standards that Discord cheated even according to his own rules, in order to warp her mind.

That unusual thing suggested to shipping-inclined people that perhaps Discord regarded Fluttershy differently from the rest.

But it all started to mount up even more seriously when Keep Calm and Flutter On (S3E10) then made it clear that Fluttershy was patient and forgiving enough to make a real friend out of Discord even if no one else was (initially).

Shipping inclined people took this and ran with it all the way to third base.

1- As I can understand, there's a porn joke that says "I watch that porn for the plot". Though, I have no idea how that word became synonymous for simply the butt; I mean, why not b00bz or something :dash:

2- Simply, because they look similar  >_> . Last season, the writers made that fanon a nod by putting Derpy and Dinky side to side, but apparently, her mom is another mare as seen in Flutter Bruther

3-Only because she sat on a bench like we do. though that lost it's sense since we have seen other ponies sitting like that afterwards, like the apples, and no one made a fuzz about that

4-Dude, this fandom ships just because two ponies are in opposite sides of the same room  :dash:

  • 2 weeks later...

Number 4 was something that didn't need explaining. The show literally gave it to the fandom and it's continuing shipping fuel. Hasbro even knows it by now because out of all things, a Dragonequus and a Pegasi totally makes sense compare to more obvious ships.

Here's a better question: why do people care about certain particular BG ponies, but don't care for others? It's always Derpy, Doctor, Lyra, Bonnie, Octy, Vinyl, and Minuette. Never the other ones. I bet most of you don't even know who Merry May is! :P

I think the popular background ponies simply look more distinctive. Merry May just isn't as memorable.

A pegasister, huh? You're a rarity. Not in being female but in wanting to be called a pegasister. Last time I saw it polled, only about 20% of female fans took the title of pegasister.

1) As others have replied ("I watch it for the plot"), but it's actually not just an MLP thing. I'm not sure if it was around before MLP, or whether MLP started it, but it's definitely used in other fandoms now.

2) People are morons: it's because they have a similar mane and a similar coat color, and because they like to imagine ponies making babies.

3) Anthropology is a genesis fanfiction. One of the first; one of the best; one of the most-read. You should read it. Anthropology was really what sold me on the fandom overall. Also people associate Lyra with humans because it can be pretty darn funny. Lyra can be used as a brony surrogate, or as a crazy cryptozoologist. I've laughed at both interpretations.

4) People are morons. (although there was one official comic where Discord dreamed about "Fluttershy and the kids")

1. no idea, I am into that somewhat and haven't seen that (although i am only recently into it and havent rped that much)

ALSO don't imply we are insane! Well, idk, maybe we are.

2. @Stolen OC why are people with different opinions morons? Anyways, no strong opinion here, but it could be...

3 no opinion since I haven't seen any evidence of that

4 Discord goes well with fluttershy because of the show. Discord and Fluttershy both relate to the same group of people too, socially awkward. So it makes sense that they will be shipped together. Also fluttershy is into animals... OHHHH I went there xD discord is kind of an animal

As far as the "I watch it for the plot", it actually originates from anime.

I had understood it to originate from Playboy Magazine, i.e. "I read it for the articles."

looks like you got some answers, but i'll just add mine for a little variety.

1: What's the plot of MLP?
Can relate to that question, ponies butts have cutie marks, and the whole show is pretty heavily plotted towards these marks on their rumps, so thus: plots.

2: I for one thought they looked a tad similar, but a sister is also very possible.

3: Only thing i can think of is the same as others have said: she sits more like a human than a pony.

4: Just fandom stuff, and i wonder why people ship Rarity with Spike so much.

Atleast Fluttercord is one of the better ships (not that i like it that much), mostly because of how they have behaved around each other.

Hi, as this thread is about the fandom and their idiosyncrasies and not just about the show itself, it has been moved to Sugarcube Corner.

<p>This thread appears to be related to the My Little Pony franchise and/or the Bronydom in general. Thus, it has been sentenced to Sugarcube Corner.</p>
