food Biggest cooking fail?

Sweetcake

Recommended Posts

Whether you are decent or a master in the kitchen, we all make mistakes at some point! Especially when we are trying to create new tastes for delicious meals!

So what is your biggest cooking flop? Perhaps you used sugar instead of salt? Maybe you believed adding orange juice to rice pilaf would taste amazing? Whatever your story, I'd love to hear it.

Most of my silly stories come from being a kid. When I was younger, the only food we had available was wheat bread and bologna. So I took that, but I didn't want the sour mustard. I tried to make honey mustard (which may have been gross if I made it right anyway) using SPLENDA and mustard. I took one bite...and threw it in the trash!

Yeah I'm actually very good at cooking naturally and that's probably because I can be a real perfectionist when it comes to cooking! Anyways a few times when I've been making toasted sandwiches for the family for lunch I've gone off to browse on the fourms while the sandwiches are toasting. However that did lead to me burning the sandwiches a number of times and my parents are quite paranoid about the fact of burnt food causing cancer so even though I wanted to eat my burnt sandwiches anyways they just took them in front of me and put them in the bin before I could eat them and they were telling me off and lecturing me about how burnt food can cause cancer. But still it hasn't been officially scientifically proven that burnt food can actually cause cancer yet so my parents are actually paranoid about a health fact that isn't even a legitimate thing yet! :)

well its mainly a fail, that turned into a success.. I guess :P I was making some potato skins and left them in the oven to cook. it was supposed to be... 5 minutes I think, then I forgot about them. it was about 12 minutes in when my dad asked what I had in the oven, and I panicked and took them out, they were mostly burned, though when my family tried it, they actually liked it! :pout: so I suppose its both a fail and a success *shrugs*

Once I burnt an entire kettle of green beans to a crisp so much I had to throw the kettle out xD I left it on low simmer, then I got caught up with other things and smelled it the next day :o

Hmm well I was cooking a big pizza (the frozen ones) and when I got it out of the oven....my hand jerked a little with out paying attention and it flipped over on the door of the oven upside down...I was a bit mad that it got ruined and had to make another one xD

I've managed to overcook potato skins before because of my unfamiliarity with the cooking world and they were in a few minutes too long.

I also managed to microwave something with tinfoil, and stopped the moment it happened to avoid a possible fire.

@Techno Universal I'm just not a fan of burnt food in general. It has a bitter taste. But I've never heard of even the rumor of it causing cancer. Only bacon.

Oh that's always unpleasant when something is so burnt you have to throw away utensils!

Yeah how burnt food has a better taste is probably why I still like it and want to eat it! Like I find that the burnt chips from takeout meals tastes a little better than the normal chips themselves! :)

I like to experiment a lot so I end up making a lot of weird things.

I was making a pavlova and forget to double the eggs with the sugar so that it basically turning into a candy puddle instead.

Worst is when you add too much salt to something and you try to cover up the taste. I did that with some fish a while back and tried to do like a jelly glaze to cover it up, but it was just good-looking crap

Recently I discovered that almond paste is absolutely not a suitable substitute for peanut in stir fries

I can’t cook but to this day the biggest fail I had was about 3 years back when I burned 3 bowls count them 3 BOWLS of easy Mac in the microwave.

let me explain I remember I took a nap and woke up around 11 at night “god I’m hungry, but it’s way too late for delivery. Oh, I know I’ll make some Easy Mac in the microwave.” I follow the directions Boom! Burned to a crisp. Second bowl..... same results. Third bowl ..... same results. And than my eyes settled long enough for me to read an instruction that I hadn’t seen before.... ADD WATER. Once I did that turned out great. Lol

I learned an important lesson that day never ever try to make anything if you’re just waking up and don’t know what the hell youre doing.

really embarrassing

One time my mom told me to cook popcorn for four minutes and stop it at a certain time but all I heard was to put it in for four minutes so I did that and it burned the popcorn and the whole house smelled like smoke. In my apartment I also forgot to put water in a bowl of ramen and in a cup of easy mac which caused the apartment to smell like smoke also. My sister even said she saw flames in the easy mac.

So yea I learned to be double extra supreme cautious with the microwave

Years ago, I was making a pie using Instant Jell-O pudding.

Me: So how do I do this?

Mom: The directions are on the box.

Me: There are two sets of directions on the box.  Which one is it?

Mom: The one on the side.

Me: Ok then.

Turns out there was a THIRD set of directions on another side of the box.  Guess which one I was supposed to be using...:D  The pie did not turn out well.

Well, here are some highlights:

I’m the only early riser in my family; I’m doing something productive at 6:00 while the rest of my family will stay in bed until 9:00 or 10:00 if they can. So one time I was grilling bread at 5:30am (our toaster broke years ago) and I made the mistake of reading a good book while I waited for it to toast. Needless to say, I got engrossed in the book and didn’t take it out until... Well, basically I set the smoke alarm off at 5:30am.

Then, I was making flapjacks, but I somehow managed to set the heat on the oven about 100 degrees too high. I don’t think I even need to say how that ended!

Until a few months ago, I hardly ever followed a recipe; I just went creative, which sometimes turned out brilliantly and sometimes just flopped completely. (a cake crumbled when I took it out of the tin to name one)

Still, when someone told me I should try following a recipe when I cook, my reaction was almost exactly like Discord’s reaction to A Plan here:

But I gave it a go, and my cooking is now quite good!

Yaay.

This is a cake I made a couple of months ago, for example:

I have the exact opposite of that problem! I'm worried to undercook since I can get sick from it

Like others here, my most common fails come from overcooking. There are also times when I experiment, with more or less successful results.

I can't remember any particular examples and I can't really tell which one is my "biggest", though.

Probably one of my earliest attempts at cooking: making honey covered peanuts. Those are one sort of food I absolutely love to pieces, but when I got smart and I tried making my own... Let's just say it wasn't pretty. The peanuts ended up completely stuck on the pot, and it was impossible to remove because of how much I left it on there. Eventually, even flies that got attracted to it ended stuck on it. I had to throw the pot away alongside the peanuts because it just was not possible to fix :P or looking back, maybe it was, but now it's too late to think on that, isn't it?

I don't quite remember the last time I mess up since I usually follow step by step instructions.

even if I did, it probably not too big of a deal.

You know them Lil' Debbie sticky buns? The ones that taste better a little warm?... well, "little" is key word here.

Once I tried doing that, spaced a bit, and came back opening the microwave to plumes of black smoke and the thing burnt to a literal charcoal lump! ...Might have left the plastic wrapper on it...

I do get creative sometimes! Good thing though that I tend to have a strong stomach! Mother used to whine about the stench coming off my Liverwurst & Saurkraut sandwhiches, but those were easy enough to make. You ever get low on ingredients, so you decide to throw things together? I had a tin of sardines and flour so I figured, why not make sardine pancakes?...  Had some... rather vicious cramps for about two days after that. I do not like wasting food, lol!

Beatings & Salivations Everybeing!   Creativity is something blatantly important to me as is no doubt evidenced by the 28 OCs I have posted here of the some forty plus I have, they're linked altogether at the bottom of my About Me page in my Profile & I would deeply cherish anything you wish to say about them! Among which of those I am proudest most of is my Draconequusona, His/My Ask Thread  and my Hydra, Gallimaufry or "Mauf" and their own Ask Thread!  Either way, sufficed to say, I am quite confident I have more OCs than you! Crazier to! Do You have a tatzelpony?! No, I rather think you don't! Hew-Hew-hew!
