    • Not at all, the creators weren't even trying to do that.

A lot of ponies have pointed out that season 7 episode 14 was a brief showing of what the brony fandom is like, where we have many adult males critically analyzing the show and criticizing it. I wanted your thoughts in the polls.

The episode had nothing to do with the fandom, it had to do with the people who work on the show, and the hardships that can come from “fame” in all its forms. The episode wasn’t about the ‘critics’ of the journal, it was about how the main six have to deal with said people. And most importantly, how knowing the work they do is appreciated by even a few, makes it worth any of the downsides.

When I watched this episode I thought "Us bronies are loyal to the fandom  we watch the show and pay lots of money to Hasbro and THIS is what they think of us...

The Fuck?"

Yes it did, but some parts were left out. It is one of the best season 7 episodes because it shows us how the writers experience some of us. :twi:

I believe it shows both the writers being the main 6 and how us bronies react to the show, it shows both points.

Yeah, it was kinda messed up, but some of us bronies do act "certain ways" when we probably shouldn't.

No,  because that wasn't what the episode was trying to do.   Yes, it made fun of certain aspects of the fandom but to claim that it was an accurate depiction of the entirety of it is just plain silly.

The only thing that it accurately portrays is the lens through which they view themselves. They should have never done that episode as no matter the intentions they lack goodwill of the fandom to make fun of it.

I would say that it didn't really portray the fandom too well. It tried to portray it, but it failed miserably because it only focused on the negative points on the fandom. M.A Larson himself who wrote this episode and the season 5 episode "Slice of Life" said that he hated how this episode turned out, and said that's not how he thinks of us at all, he said that if you want to see how he thinks of us a fandom, we should go watch the "Slice of Life" episode.

I would almost say that this episode portrays what the big-wigs in Hasbro HQ may think of us, obviously not the show writers and staff who have made it clear through the years that they think of us more than just an arguing bunch of no-life's :unamused:

It didn't fail, because it wasn't trying to portray the entirety of the fandom. The whole point was that they were only trying to focus on the negative aspect of it.

I thought it was funny, a humorous poke. Though whether or not that's what it was supposed to be, I dunno.

I don't analyse the show too hard, I enjoy on a normal level. (though I do make observations and draw various things from episodes.)

But I think their reactions to the situation are real good. Especially in the song when Twi says "by now don't you know us so well?""

(yes twi, I do!)

I guess a good instance would be Fake it till you make it. All the comments about how it affects Fluttershy's character and such, everyone can discuss that, but getting too much into that discussion makes you at risk for becoming like one of those nitpicky ponies...

I think pretty much every fandom is like this. That said, I really don't think they were hating on us with this episode, just poking fun at us and showing in a humorous way that fans can be annoying as hell sometimes. I really enjoyed the episode exactly because they were quite spot on with some of the jabs. I've seen people who got angry because they feel the creators aren't showing us any respect, but I personally feel those people should remember Slice of Life, which was nothing but fandom nods and basically a thank you episode to the huge demographic that is the brony fandom.

The Mane 6 had expectations that the public would act one way but were caught off guard when confronted with an outside world that doesn't easily fit their expectations. Ultimately we live in a world of different views and beliefs, but that's too much for FIM to go into.

I enjoy the episode for what it is, although I can imagine myself coming in to show and tell the Mane 6 the more positive side of the fandom. Examples are such as which lessons changed me for the better, or that I understand that even funny Pinkie has her genuine sad moments, or that Fluttershy is a perfect example of how everyone grows through character development at their personal pace.

That's not why I disliked it.

I disliked it because it was a torture porn against the Mane 6 (especially Rarity).

I don't think that's true. I mean, you can't really deny that they're making fun of the overly critical members of the fandom in this particular episode. Don't get me wrong, I doubt that the sole reason they made this episode was to make fun of the fandom but to say that it has nothing to do with the fandom is just false.

It's not particularly subtle in painting a line between the Ponyville denizens and the My Little Pony fandom, but it's not really aiming to portray the fandom as a whole so much as say something about the negative aspects of fandom in general. Still, I found it kinda bitter and defensive and probably would have had a better time with it were there some sort of more moderate presence.

Ehh... for me, Stranger Than Fanfiction is a better depiction of the brony fandom, as well as other fandoms in general (like Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and anime). Well, I'm pretty sure real world con attendees don't usually get sucked into the world they're a fan of. ;) But regardless, Rainbow Dash and Quibble Pants are much the same as your typical fan, flaws and all.
