 Art comes in many forms, so we decided to not limit it to drawing this month, and so this new music composition contest is born, complete with it's own special rank for the winner in the end. the theme is 'Adventure' it can be anything, be it digitally composed or played and recorded, it could be  just music or a-capella or both, want to rap? go for it, and if playing an instrument nor singing is your thing, go ahead and hum it or whistle a melody, everything is acceptable as long as it's original and not a cover/remix of an existing arangement/song. the deadline is March 31st, submit your entries in this thread, preferably in a spoiler tag

Lol. I clicked on this thread because I thought it had a strange title. "Are we supposed to be imitating equine grunts and hoof scratches now?" is what I was thinking. 

Kinda glad I was wrong. 

Are you looking for anything in particular? I've had an idea for an EQG episode/song for awhile now, but I've never went ahead and fleshed it out. Also, though I can sing well, I don't have the Sonata Dusk voice for the song in mind. What if I just wrote the sheet music; would that be enough?

unfortunately no, it has to be original but we may have one like this again in the future(we had one before iirc) of course, you can just go ahead and do it anyway just for fun if you'd like

no, we're not looking for something in particular, the theme is 'Adventure' feel free to interpret it as you'd like, it's vague on purpose
it doesn't have to match the voice with the character, i'd like to encourage you to sing it anyway.
i haven't thought of sheet music tbh, but i doubt many can read it and know what it sounds like so it will be a bit tricky to judge

Some hints/tips:

Think of Dungeons and Dragons.

Think of a faraway land full of mystery and awe.

Adventure music doesn't always have to be high energy. Tell a story with your music and provide the listener with a "core theme" that they could remember. Perhaps this "core theme" could center around the main character of the story. 

You can use major keys, minor keys or even both. It's really cool to use both, especially if you're telling a story with your music. Major doesn't always have to be happy, just the same as minor doesn't always have to be sad. 

Try not to stick to a theme or chord progression too much, it would distract your listener and your piece may end up coming off as boring or repetitive. 

If you're gonna use lyrics, make sure you "show don't tell". Showing is SUPER important when it comes to writing lyrics, because it makes your lyrics more descriptive, rather than just straight up telling. Use similes, metaphors and vivid imagery as you write your lyrics.

I think I have done this recommendation several times in the past, both here and over 4chan. If you don't feel like a scurvy salty dog and don't want to spent a good buck on a DAW, you can try LMMS. Is a free DAW that also accepts VST plugins.

Actually, there's a freeware program called MuseScore. (MuseScore.org) There's no cost to download the program, plus it's simple to get started. You start a new file, and the wizard guides you through. To actually create music, there's a big "N" button you press. Then you select what type of note you want. (Full, Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth, and Thirty-Secondth are all readily available.) Then you click wherever you want on the musical scale, and the note appears. 

MuseScore also can output to a .WAV file for actual audio format. I use this feature to create backing tracks for the hymns I sing on my YouTube channel.

Once you create your score in MuseScore and save it as a .WAV file, you can then import that file in Audacity, a freeware recording studio program. You'll want to turn down the gain for your backing track, as the .WAV file is very loud. Then, plug in a mic to your computer, and record your vocal track(s). You'll want to record as many times as it takes to get it right. This isn't a live performance, so you don't have to get it perfect on the first try; neither do you have to keep what you record in the first take. Go ahead and re-record 20 times if you need to. 

After all that, export from Audacity. You can keep the .WAV file format if you're going to do more, or you can just export as a .mp3 and be done. (.WAV if you're going to add video to the audio; YouTube requires video. At least, I haven't figured out yet how to upload an audio-only file there. So far, I just use Windows Movie Maker to slap a photo on the audio, make that my video, and call it good enough.)

Ahh I tried both before at least tenatively,  good suggestions thoo   I may reconsider x3

LMMS tho I found quite difficult, the interface felt a bit messy (that's to me subjectively lol) and often it didn't always work 100 per cent. I guess it just felt like quite a big jump. I'm sure it's a very powerful program though especially for something that's free. 

As for musescore I guess it's a kinda finale equivalent (or well it seemed to me haha). It's good for that sort of thing but idk I guess it didnt click the few times I did dig into it briefly though that was a long time back years back really so i'm still willing to give it ago again, thinking about it might be some good if I can then import it somewhere else and tweak it like mentioned. So that might be an idea I take ;P

I did something back on finale sometime back at school which was decent and working on a bit. But yeah id have to brush up on a lot of things haha my knowledge on stuff.

I think so far I only really got anything that sounded okay from mixing stuff in Audacity but I used premade music. And I have used really simple online piano key arrangement type programs. I did import something I made (a midi file) from one of these editors into audacity though it crashed whenever i tried anything. I guess I needed to convert it to some other file type first? (I guess wav) I gave up after that lol I guess I got tired and like eeh

I also seen this old fashioned program digital composer or that which looked very simple to use but not made anymore. And I have looked at chiptune software which is fun but niche. I have this cheap music maker for steam and sounds loaded on that didn't appeal to me at all and I dunno there was a weird license on it but probs fun for kids and that.

I have heard good things about a free DAW called cakewalk. It used to be paid, but after the company that made it got bought out they decided to make it free. Maybe you could give it a try, I'm sure there are lots of resources available to learn to use it

If you're gonna stick to a free DAW, try to use one that gives you the option to record your own melodies with whatever instruments you're given. Some people find it easier to work with loops, but let me tell you, the hardest thing to do when working with loops is creating effective transitions from one part of the song to the other. You simply can't just jump from one section to the next without any hint that a change is coming. Sure you could perform the loop for 8 bars then switch to a very similar sounding loop, but your listener may catch the awkward transition. 

Most DAWs either outlay your composing area as either time-based or measure-based. A measure consists of a certain number of beats. By default, there are 4 beats to a measure and the quarter note gets the beat. Here's a simple chart that could be useful:

1-2-3-4|2-2-3-4|3-2-3-4|4-2-3-4|5-2-3-4|6-2-3-4|7-2-3-4|8-2-3-4

Measure 4 could be where you place a "minor fill". A "minor fill" simply lets the listener to sit tight and something is coming soon. Measures 7-8 can be reserved for the "major fill". Major fills, as the name implies lets the listener know to get ready because a big change is coming. You want to save the drum action for the major fills. Keep it subtle for the minor fills.

Oh yee I saw that one b4 reccomended not sure I got too far with actually trying it because yeah more recent thing in it being free x3

But I did hear it was one of the easier ones to use in terms of interface and a good package. 

As long as it is proper free its all good ^^ I know magix music maker had some weird restrictions on the music you make or something but  seems legit.

Yeah I would defo prefer a program with some kinda instruments in it or way to compose from scratch at least in addition to loops, having both would be pretty good too tho. Loops are fun but i'd feel it leads to something more like a ringtone thats a bit jumpy, unless I blended and overlay the sounds in some way or yea like trick with similar sounds.

MuseScore has a whole orchestra as far as instruments are concerned. I haven't really played around with the drum options because the hyms I sing don't usually call for them. And from what I hear, MuseScore isn't the easiest program for creating drumbeats. 

MuseScore does, however, allow you to create full-length songs. You don't have to rely on looping at all; you can copy/paste your loops over and over as many times as you want. Then after your loops, you can just compose your transitions. Then you can compose your "major fill" immediately after. 

 

I want to mention also that MuseScore has keyboard shortcuts that can REALLY save a lot of time! If you type letters A-G on your keyboard, the corresponding note will appear on the Staff. Numbers 1-7 on your keyboard switch the length of the note. For example, I believe 4 corresponds to a quarter note, 5 corresponds to a half note, etc. The period key makes the note a dotted note. And, the Up/Down arrows change the note by half of a semitone. 

So, let's say I wanted to create a dotted quarter note A#, followed by a half note D natural. My keyboard sequence would be:

N4.A↑5D

Just like that, I'd have the two notes that I want. (Whenever you switch note lengths, MuseScore switches off the dot.)

This is one of the main reasons I really like using MuseScore. I can quickly create sheet music simply by typing it in, without having to fiddle with things, most of the time.
