What is your opinion of the old generations?

Meh, you've got a point. Besides, I wasn't being 100% serious about the whole burn-all-the-previous-gens anwyay.

I'll narrow down my generation-destroying spree to 3.5 then. :3

wasn't being serious? :(

I think they should bring back or make their own version of the Big Brothers from the original MLP. I think it was a fantastic idea not only in integrating boys into the fan base so it really is a show for everyone but it was adorable!

I do, however, enjoy the fact that there are a lot of male characters, even if they are just side ponies per episode but when people find out I like the show, I ALWAYS get asked, "Are there guy ponies? Or are they all girls?"

G4 all the way! The other generations just...I dunno, they're just not *pony*.

If G4 was replaced by G3 or something, I doubt I would have become a brony.

*whistles "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and chops of the Crawling Newborns of G3.5's heads with poop shovel.*

What if they bring the scariness back by trying to make it 3 year old idiot cute? I think then we'd have a war.

I had no problem with the G3 toy ponies because they kind of resembled G1 but the G3.5 was terrifying. G4 is somewhat better toy wise but the motion sensor Baby Pinkie Pie creeps me out. Whenever I walk by her on an aisle she starts screaming at me. Once, she was behind some other boxes so I couldn't see her. All I heard was "Hi! I'm Pinkie Pie! Look at me! I can WALK!" coming out of nowhere.

I don't know what the old generations are like so I can't say, but I do think it'd be cool if Lauren Faust DID manage to bring some more G1 ponies into FIM (besides Applejack and Spike). I remember reading that Moon Dancer was supposed to be the main character of FIM, but Hasbro lost the copyright to the names of the old ponies back then so they couldn't fit her (or anyone else for that matter) either. If FIM was full of the G1 (or G2 ponies, with better personalities and some minor revamps), oh, how different the show would be! I wonder if someone can do fanart of G1 ponies done in FIM style?

Because Spike is best pony. http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png

I don't really like the older generations but I do have respect for them. They brought us G4 after all. The only think I remotely enjoyed from the previous gens was the short film, "Rescue at Midnight Castle". It actually had some action and a menacing vilain. (though the story kind of sucked)

I really have no opinion. I wasn't aware of My Little Pony until 2004 when somebody on an forum I frequented liked them and centered her whole profile name and avatar around one of the ponies (not one of them that's in G4).

I'm sure that I saw commercials with MLP in it before then but I just don't remember them at all. I had even less of a clue that the property had actual cartoons. I thought it was just a line of toy ponies. Friendship is Magic is the first MLP cartoon I ever heard of.

So I have no opinion. Overlooking them, I think that G1 would be okay. G2... I don't know... G3 I really dislike the way the ponies look, so no thanks.

I could not stand the older generations, which is why I couldn't figure out why all these mlp pictures were popping up everywhere. One day I watched two episodes to see what all the buzz was about and now here I am.

Ha, My lil sister had g3 ponies. They use to be the enemy of "The Super Cars" (It was dumb, but I was a kid. My hotwheels were super heroes! Protecting the boy's room from the girl forces!) But I don't care for em. It's that "You know it's there but you avoid it, even though it's part of what you like"

  • 3 weeks later...

All I knew about the first incarnations of MLP were that they happened to be aimed at little girls and that the cartoons were ~20 minute advertisements.

In short, not very positive. I don't hate the old incarnations; they simply do no appeal to me the same way as FIM does.

Thread summary in 10 seconds flat:

For the sake of curiosity I watched some of the previous generations. Here's my impression of each:

G1 - I don't much care for it. However, I will give it credit in that it at least tried to be interesting. It had some actually interesting antagonists and the setting, juvenile as it was, still made an effort to be somewhat original. This is where we got sea ponies, after all, and who doesn't like sea pony Lyra? Unfortunately, the ponies themselves are just flat and boring. They all blended together so much that I couldn't distinguish them if you put a gun to my face.

G2 - Opposite problem. They made a bit more effort to give the ponies individual personalities, but they did so in a backdrop that was basically modern America...only with ponies. Seeing them walk around on two legs and use some kind of magic muppet magnets in their hands to use telephones made me wonder why the show even needed to be about ponies at all. I guess they wanted kids to relate to it, but if that was their goal they aimed about five years too high.

G3 - Sweet baby JESUS what the hell happened? The past two generations were flawed but there were still a few things they did right. This, though....I cannot think of anything good to say about it. Every character has the same voice, the same personality, the same stupid dialogue. There was no thought put into this. None. There is no conflict, no stakes, and no reason for us to care about a single one of these characters. Terrible, terrible stuff.

G1 - bad

G2 - bad

G3 - wall banger

G4 does take elements of G1, which Lauren Faust is a huge fan of. The first episode of FiM especially is an homage to the very first MLP G1 special, Escape from Midnight Castle. If you look at this picture here, you will see how G1 has inspired G4, only they needed to use names that Hasbro had the copyright to.

G1 had influence, LF redid everything and made a whole new series with G4.

Done.

Yeah, that summarizes my views. From what I've read, Lauren Faust pitched G4 as what she made of G1, with the characters advanced a bit because she was a professional now, instead of a child playing with toys.

In other words, she saw the show, bought the toys, played with them, and what we're seeing now in G4 is a lot of what she imagined. Sheesh. Talk about a dream come true!

Anyways, she's great at doing characters, and that's why I'm here for G4. I liked powder puff girls so many years ago. I saw only a few minutes of "Fosters Home", and I immediately recognized the show did an excellent job with the characters, enough to gain my respect (but I still didn't like it that much. It was a tad too odd for me.), and she did even better with MLP. Kudos.

Curses! You beat me to it! I decided to post this while I was reading page 2 of this thread!

Oh, yes, and I'm gonna go watch some G4 as brain bleach, perhaps to purge my mind of the old generations...

Those horses... I find them uncanny... They scare me...

And from what I've seen, the voice acting is absolutely horrible, the characters are all the same, lifeless puppets and the plots are boring to tears.

Maybe there's some exceptions, but...

G4... Cleanse my mind! To youtube I go!
