When they do a closeup on the shelf, they show six spools of thread before the rainbow one:  Purple, orange, yellow, white, cerulean, and pink.

 

In other words, the colors of the coats of each of the Mane Six. 

 

Do you think this means anything, or is it just a little "easter egg" thrown at us by the animators?

I don't really think it necessarily means anything. While it does match the mane 6's coats, it's probably just a form of subtle symbolism to end the episode on a happy note.

I dunno There's been a lot of endings like that this season, though; Flutterbat at the end of Bats!, that thing at the end of Castle-Mania, pretty sure a couple of others I'm forgetting... 

 

I think there's too many to chalk up to coincidence, but I dunno what they could mean

I think it meant when the Mane 6 would use the Elements of Harmony you got the whole Rainbow Laser show..I think it still enforces that they are the Elements of Harmony, despite what we saw happen in the season opener.

I'm calling it now, were seeing the keys and this is leading to one major (3 minute) battle at the end.

 

Hasbro is pulling out this "Rainbow Power Pony" line and this is all leading us to this conclusion.

 

Spikes "Power Pony" episode was just simple foreshadowing (coincidence?)

 

Starting with Fluttershy's Hulk/fang... these are both symbols of Flutershys "beast within" and how she is conquest of herself

 

The Rainbow thread and Radiance both show her creativeness and being the thread that holds the group together

 

The others are there, we just haven't seen all the pieces to this puzzle yet.

 

Again this is just head canon but who knows...

I think it actually means that they are all connected in some way, and that thread is just a reminder of the harmony and friendship all ponies share. To me after all the rainbow is harmony, balance and above all peace, why not it be just a simple symbolism of friendship?

 

Btw did anypony else cry from this episode? It got me teary eyed just because I know what its like to be taken advantage of at a work place. It happened on several occassions because, like Rarity, I was being generous to others. My employeer constantly took advantage of it, made me do things not other teachers would be doing, like cleaning up all the other teachers classrooms PLUS my own, or staying after the long hours to clean up the entire building on my own... But luckily I didn't falter and take advantage of other people just because somepony else did... Sure I could have been rude back but its just not in me because I know its wrong. Meh...but regardless this episode made me cry, and reminded me to be true to myself.

Anyway I personally think the threads at the end were simple representations of the mane 6 colors. Most shows tend to show a characters theme color so I see nothing unusual there.

 

Though I am curious  of the rainbow thread. Because it gave the same flash that Rarity had in the middle of the episode. This seems too heavy to ignore so I'm going on a limb here to say that the rainbow thread will in fact be Rarity's key to the box.

This got Me thinking

episode 4 Daring don't Rainbow doubt's herself and her element after it seems to lead to Daring do getting caught but is reminded of it and helps stop Auizotl

episode 8 Rarity's Element is tested and she begins to doubt her element and then rediscovers it after realising how important her friends are.

 

 

And if you look at episode 12 it shows pinkie's element being tested by a new party pony

@GoldenCal, you certainly have a point, the episode with Pinkie being tested by a new party pony aka Weird Al, might show her key, Daring Don't showed Rainbow's element, either that or the Rainbow Falls episode, and this Rarity episode showed Rarity's element. Question is which episodes will deal with Fluttershy, Twilight and Applejack?

I noticed it too the first time I watched this episode. I didn't shared my observation with anyone, because I thought it was obvious and anyone noticed it already.

I thought of these spools as representing Rarity's best friends: her Mane Six friends, and now she gained a new friend, Coco Pommel, which will work with her, and there are rumors that we'll see her again.

 

There's also a theory that this rainbow-colored spool could be a disguised key to the Harmony Box, since Rarity has reconnected with her Element when she saw that rainbow shine on the band tape, and the lesson she learned on behalf of Coco Pommel is related to it, so this "artifact" could symbolize all that and be her "reminder" of reconnecting with her Element.

 

As to the rainbow representing Harmony, I totally agree, and I might have suggested it already in some threads here.

While I do think that is a good theory, I think the fact it will be /rainbow/ is not accurate. I don't think they'll introduce another rainbow shaded character perhaps it is rainbow because it combines all of their best qualities.

Yeah, like a few others have already said, I don't think the first six spools of thread mean anything important; aside from just being the colors of the mane 6. As for the rainbow spool of thread, I'm thinking that it might have some purpose later in the season; since Meghan McCarthy tweeted about it..

I dunno if the other spools really mean anything, i think they just thought it'd be nice to have the other colors there, but i don't think they have any big importance. I think the rainbow one certainly does, but not really the others.
