Which is more important, money or happiness?

I hate my job, but I'm making decent money and really not working all that hard. Problem is my Boss treats me like a Slave and with total disrespect. I HATE her. I also get no time off and no sick days. Should I pursue another career even though I may have to work longer hours for less pay? Which is really more important, money or happiness??

I really want to experience happiness, I really truly do. Money won't get me anywhere in life. All money will do is attract leeches who want to take everything I have. Happiness on the other hand will keep me positive and motivated to continue living.

In an ideal world, happiness would be more important.

Unfortunately most of us live in this place called the real world where money is required to do everything from continuing to exist to..well, anything. The whole point of money is to get goods and services, and, with the exceptions of social security/disability benefits/charities/homeless shelters, people without money don't tend to receive said goods and services.

So my money is on..well...money.

Happiness, I made a lot of money in the navy, but I would give up every dollar I earned, just the be happy before I enlisted, PTSD is a heavy burden, and people do take happiness for granted just like money, in the end you can always have money, but to be happy throughout your life is priceless.

I'm going with Happiness. I only have one life, why waste my time doing something I dislike for a living? If I could live off of a moderate income from something I love doing, I would be content. You don't need to own a yacht to be truly happy.

I believe that happiness in essence, is a much more important attribute to have than wealth. It's a state of mind and spirit that exists within us all. Most people seem to have this misconstrued idea that money = happiness. Yes the wealth and happiness can coincide, but by wealth alone your heart can end up void if there is no passion or motivation to support it all.

Money naturally. Money breeds happiness. Natural happiness that doesn't stem from money is a lot harder to come by.

Though under the conditions you described I'd take the pay cut.

I speak from experience having lost my job to an unfair boss.

Happiness... Which, unless you have very generous friends or you're content to live off the wild, you need a certain amount of money for.... So, money. Which, frankly, isn't worth having if you're not happy. Round and round it goes.

But regarding your situation, while it's great that you want to better your position, you should proceed carefully. Keep in mind that the market isn't in the best state right now. A lot of people out there would kill just to have a job.

Your happiness is far more important.  There is always a way to get by and survive, but when you're not happy, your quality of life diminishes slowly, it stresses you out, it is physically damaging to your body.  It shortens life expectancy, it can cause breakdowns and emotional distress, and it can turn you into an entirely different person.  Do not fuck with your happiness.  You need to confront your boss and tell her exactly how you feel, and say that you will NOT take that kind of abuse if this is true.  Threaten to quit at the very least, and demand a raise, because why not.

Yes. Indeed I would kill just to have a job. So what is it Kidnap? Assassination? Multiple Maim and Torture?

I think pursuing a job that you are good at and that you enjoy could benefit you in money and happiness. I think happiness is more important, money is needed to survive in this world but happiness can make you feel better even in dark times.

Close to what I was going to say as well... but I couldn't had said it better myself....

Both are important for they both correlate with one another. If you do not have money, you will not be happy for the times when you need it most. If you're rich yet not happy, then all that wonderful money is useless. If you can find a job, as @Scootalove points out, in which you know you'll enjoy, it'll breed both wealth and happiness to you. Even if you were to acquire a job where the pay was low initially, if it's your calling then you will flourish and excel at that position and sooner than later you'll have the chance to attain an even higher paying standard than what you initially were hired for. There'll always be people for hire, but the ones that stand out and get the promotions are those whom are not only passionate about their jobs, they're usually the happier individuals amongst the crowd.

What's important is finding the balance between the two.

Money. Why? Because money is essential to our survival. We wouldn't be able to get good food, we wouldn't be able to have shelter and we wouldn't be able to keep the lights on without money

if you hate your job, you shouldn't be doing it.

really, the most important thing about a job is that you do something that you like! if you work a job you like, you'll work harder, climb up faster and make more money respectively.

tough with this economy and job market...

Happiness is more important as long as it doesn't mean you end up living on the streets :P

What is happiness without money and what is money without happiness? They are both needed, though a problem with the money is how your Government controls it. Money it self is not evil, the government is. Money is not the route of all evil like some people claim.
