'Mary Sue' guidelines & how to make a good Alicorn OC
Duster Dawnhorse replied to Lightning Bliss's topic in Sugarcube Corner
There are ways to pull off alicorn OCs. Being an alicorn isn't a mary sue trait off the bat. It's not a trait I'd encourage newbie character builders to take but it's not immediately bad. It's what a writer DOES with that trait that makes it bad. Alicorn or not, the question I always ask OC makers when they need feedback on a character is "why should anyone care?" The key to a successful character is garnering some kind of attractive emotion out of someone. Either people are rooting for your hero or watching to see what your crafty villain does next, that kind of thing. A lot of alicorn OCs are poorly written and go from point A to point Y by the author handwaving it in with little or insultingly stupid explanations. There's no reason to pay attention to the character because it's not new, unique, and the creator has given us no reason to care. "Princess Celestia thought MSPaintNeonButt was the smartest coolest magicalest unicorn ever so she made her a princess." So what? Twilight had to banish four villains, solve a previously unsolveable magical riddle, work with five other individuals, and rescue gods to get her wings, how does MSPaintNeonButt's "because I said so" story compare to that? And generally I'm not initially drawn to character designs that couldn't pass in the show. I'm a stickler for canon. (Says the one with an OC that's a race not even in the show.) That being said, black/rainbow and black/red OCs are done to death. If you ever feel compelled to make a black/bright color OC, use this site for something better. -

The sickest you've ever been to work/school.
Duster Dawnhorse replied to SkyDream's topic in General Discussion
Randomly at my food service job I started to feel off. I felt a little clammy and dizzy so I asked to take a break in the back. Thankfully the only coworker at the time who wasn't a jerk was the one working with me, so he told me to go ahead, take a bottle of water and a pastry from our stock and come back when I felt better. I started to get cold sweats, blurry vision, lightheadedness, and eventually I passed out in the back for a few seconds and ended up on the floor on the phone with my mom crying in confusion. Thank God I was with not-jerk coworker and he let me go home (he didn't know I passed out until the day after) I was on the phone with my mom the whole time I was walking to the train station and I had to stop a few times from dizziness. The diagnosis? Blood sugar crash. You'd think working in an ice cream store that lets the employees have free sweets all the time would prevent that. -

Anyone else not like alcohol?
Duster Dawnhorse replied to SolidTwilight's topic in General Discussion
I don't drink a lot. It reacts with my medication and makes me very very sleepy. I pretty much only drink if I'm home and not driving anywhere or with friends and I'm not driving anywhere (and they have made a pact with me to cut me off after one drink no matter what I tell them.) I hate beer but I love anything super fruity. Make me a good pina colada and I'll be your best friend. It's the burn of alcohol that makes me gag. Personal reasons, I've seen alcohol destroy family members. I've gone to meetings for the friends and family of alcoholics and that changed my perception a lot. I know my family is predisposed to alcoholism so I try to be sparing. -

Asexual aromantic lady, kinda PM shy (and chronically PM forgetful) but a chat thread sounds pretty nice! I don't mind questions about aromanticism and/or asexuality, I'm willing to educate anyone who is willing to ask questions!

Things you want everyone to know about your job.
Duster Dawnhorse replied to SkyDream's topic in General Discussion
Doggie daycare handler and dog trainer in training - Don't wait to tell us if your dog has aggression issues with dogs, people, food, and/or toys. We'd rather know BEFORE so we don't have your dog try to eat our hands or another dog's face. - I don't get to snuggle and play with dogs all day. A lot of my day is scooping, mopping, and cleaning the dogs themselves. My own pup I bring to work with me gets covered in spit daily. - You would never let your dog lick you if you've seen where its mouth has been. - Daycare =/= training. It's not our job to fix your dog's behavioral issues. We only watch your dog, we don't train them. (We will practice tricks you have been working on if you just ask!) - Training is a process. Your dog will not magically be perfectly trained after half an hour of learning "sit." Dog training is constant reinforcement, practice, and upkeep. - 90% of problems people attribute to "dominance" or "separation anxiety" is really just your dog being a brat. If it's either of those things, you will know. - See a dog wearing a working dog vest? Don't touch it! You shouldn't be petting or shoving your hands in front of dogs you don't know anyway! Aaaauuuuggghhhh I used to do graphic design and I hated this. Photoshop does not have a "make art" button! Adding onto that, wanna know how to be a good commissioner? Watch Suited for Success and don't do anything the mane six does. -
Artist Alley table was 50 last time. Just keep in mind that it's a commitment to have a table. You need product and patience to sit at a table for a while.

How many languages do you speak (or plan to learn)?
Duster Dawnhorse replied to Carbon Maestro's topic in General Discussion
I speak English and intermediate-advanced Japanese. I can read pretty fluently, kanji still messes me up. I'm planning on learning basic dog commands in Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean as well since we have clients at work that teach their dogs in their native language. -
general media What's your preferred form of entertainment?
Duster Dawnhorse replied to Banul's topic in Media Discussion
TV, mostly online. When my internet's down I'm always up for a good book or a downloaded podcast. I got a really big nonfiction library to work through. Probably gonna get started on audiobooks though. Been hearing good things.- 29 replies

The one that stuck out the most is a little long so bear with me. I got into a car accident on the freeway, totally rear-ended a guy. I'm stuck in the car frozen in shock since I have never gotten into an accident before. Once the shock wears off I begin completely panicking. The driver of the car I hit got out, opened the door, and started asking if I was alright. I could barely get a word out so he takes my hand, starts directing me on what to do, and calls an ambulance for me. After he calls the ambulance he stayed with me the whole time (and helped me call my mom to get her to the scene) until the cops and medics arrived. I got taken away, my mom arrived and dealt with the cops and the driver. The driver's car was barely scratched. Mine was totaled. In the end the guy never even filed an insurance claim. Never got his name, but I'm still amazed at the kindness of this guy.

movies/tv What is your favourite movie?

If I had to pick a top favorite, it's Inherit the Wind. The 1960s version. Probably one of the most defining courtroom dramas of the 20th century. -

I wanna grab a nicer package this round, I just need to wait on the funds. I will for sure be coming back and put in a request to run a sequel to my panel. I have a little under a year to find a new fanfic victim. Challenge accepted.

With bonus tips on how to rainbowfy your OC. Her normal tagua nut pendant got upgraded to some swanky black opal. Her repeating mark is the S shaped path from the pen tool. Not only did her mane get some color, but her toes and face stripes also got a touchup. It's magic! Duster's rainbow palette was a challenge since she's all brown. But color theory takes all the guesswork out! Here's how I managed to rainbowfy her. Color drop your mane color to get the hex code. Input the hex code here (lower right corner of the wheel) and select "tetrad." If your character has one solid mane color, use two or three colors. Two mane colors use one or two colors. Three or more use one or just stylize what you have (look at Rainbow Dash for ideas.) Screencap your colors to get onto your drawing program and enjoy! And for getting through that, here's some fat Purple Smart drawn on the 3DS. I'll be finishing the Mane 6 for postcards.

Discord was less reformed and more given rules. He was, is, and will always be the textbook definition of Chaotic Neutral. As for reforming Chrysalis, I hope not. She was an amazing villain and Canterlot Wedding is still my favorite two parter because of how wonderfully classic Disney the whole thing was. From what we know about the changelings they need to do evil things to survive so reformation wouldn't work.

Unpopular Opinions Regarding the Show
Duster Dawnhorse replied to DITR's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
- I don't get Trixie and her annoying fanbase. If it weren't for them, she never would've come back. She's pretty much Gilda in a pony skin and everybody hates Gilda for some asinine reason yet Trixie is hugely popular. - And on that subject, Magic Duel was a terrible episode and only existed because of her annoying fanbase. - Thirding the analysis videos opinion. I find Digibrony's stuff the most grating because it goes beyond analysis into personal nitpicking at frivolous details and he seems to think his opinion is everyone else's opinion. (Best example is "I DIDN'T LIKE DARING DON'T THEREFORE THE FANDOM IS DIVIDED OVER IT.") - Pinkie is the worst character on the whole show. Her "random zingers" could be replaced with the sound of a vacuum cleaner and it would have the same comedic effect. - Derpy ruined The Last Roundup. That episode has one of my favorite morals but nobody remembers it because Derpy. - As overrated as Luna is, she has so much character potential that nobody seems to be tapping into. Same with Celestia.- 1,378 replies
