Considering the lack of information we currently have about the pros of being an Earth Pony, I made my decision based around Pegasi and Unicorns wielding the exact same pros and cons Earth Ponies have, in addition to their other pros, thus making them inherently superior.

A few months ago, I would have been very much uncertain if I would rather be a Unicorn or Pegasus. I had always adored magic when it comes to fantasy stories, and most of the time I chose a magic-wielding or related class or race: Be it a mage, a sorcerer, a wizard, and the such, and I always loved to build in games like Starcraft II the units known as 'High Templar', who have no autoattack abilities and are purely based around clever usage of their three abilities (a lightning storm, a mana-draining ability that does equal damage to its health, and a merger of two Templar-type units into an 'Archon', which is an enormous unit that cannot cast spells, but deals massive damage.)

However, I had, after all, very much loved the more warrior and fight-related races and classes. In Dragon Age, I'd always go Warrior, and in World of Warcraft, my favorite class were Warrior and Paladins. Warriors just have that epic feeling which magi don't offer. But mages are mages man, and considering Twilight Sparkle is best pony, I would have gone for Unicorns. I mean, sure, flight, but what else?

However, when Hearth's Warming Eve knocked on my youtube player, immediately Pegasi began contesting Unicorns. They reminded me a bit of that ancient Greece type of fellows. Spear-wielding, they have armor, and if you try to remove Rainbow Dash from your imagination and put a badass commander with a gray beard in her place, and remove the cartoonishn element, damn, that's one badass race to be in. So, in modern times, I'd definitely go for a unicorn. But to serve under such a warrior race with such majestic and awe-inspiring culture, I'd definitely go for Pegasi, if we are talking about those times.

You know, if there's one good thing about Putting Your Hoof Down, it's the way it showed how Fluttershy could use her wings somewhat like hands.

I don't quite think she or any other Pegasi has the same sort of dexterity with their wings that a human hand would have, but it definitely gives me pause and makes me question, if only a little, my original choice for this thread. That is, I'm considering Pegasus over Unicorn now, because I think I would greatly enjoy the freedom of flight.

Unicorns can only fly by using an extremely complex spell. If "Flight" is the tilting point for you, just be born with it. No strings attached, no "can-I-or-can't-I?" issues - just claim the skies as your natural domain. Be a pegasus. You know you want to. ;)

Unicorn. Even ignoring all other magic spells, basic telekinesis would make things so much easier.

Edit: Actually, to carify: If it's just for a day, I'd rather be a pegasus. But if it's for any extended period of time, unicorn. Flying's going to lose its appeal at *some* point, and telekinesis and magic are just more practical.

Rarity got wings in the Sonic Rainboom episode, granted it was a difficult spell, but it's possible. If you want dexterity like humans have then you'd want to be a unicorn, seeing as they easily levitate and pick stuff up with magic. I think I would prefer a pegasus because I love freedom and flight.

Well, hands are the real issue, rather than flight. I would WANT to have the equivalent of hands. It's just, flight is also appealing, and if it's possible to have both, being a Pegasus would intrigue me.

I'd probably still go Unicorn though, as I answered initially, because I don't think Pegasi wings are anywhere near dextrous enough to be suitable as hands the way I'd want them to be.

Pegasus for sure!

Flying would be so much fun, controlling the weather looks like a cool job, wings look cute and Cloudsdale is beautiful!

yay.

Unicorns because they're OP. Teleport, phase-shift, flight, telekinesis, light... most of which can be available almost from birth!

Plus they're faaaaaaaabulous!

Love and Tolerance for everyone!

Especially the ones I don't agree with.

I would have to say pegasus. Magic would be fun and conveniant to have, but the idea of flying has always appealed to me. Also, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are pegasi and they are two of my favorite ponies. (Even though all of them are practically equal in my mind.)

Ohh.

At first I was "well no duh, pegasus, freedom of flight, what could ever beat that? Telekensis is so cool, but not nearly as cool as being able to soar with such power and grace!"

But this has got me second-guessing that.

Great point here, actually, hands v. flight.

I would write a large amount on comparing the two, it's kind of practicality and everyday life v. dreams and really meaningful aspirations, romantic in the sense of a dream: the dream of flight. [but I'm really tired and it's late and not up for writing a whole bunch, as is evident by my forgetting to add this sentence, originally, and having to come back and edit it in :P So I'll try to be brief ]

Honestly, I would prefer to be without the practical abilities offered by hands, and be annoyed by it sometimes, than live my entire life just wondering what it would be like to soar like a pegasus. I like birds, aerodynamic shapes are beautiful, add aerodynamic to alive and innocent critter and you really get something. But they make me a bit mad, actually, how they take such a wonderful thing as flight for granted. Though to be fair, sometimes it does seem like Eagles enjoy just soaring, having watched it. The anger is really just me being jealous :P

But, knowing individuals who can fly like that, friends, would just be painful. Everypony gets along fine without hands, even Rarity uses her limbs to operate her sowing machine instead of magic, so hooves instead of hands isn't quiet as bad a disadvantage as you might think.

At least, in this artist's, IMO canonical, opinion, my ultimate fantasy life is entirely possible, pegasus, plus engineer, and the occasional scientific study with Twilight (Engineering is applied science, after all) :D

Then again, a perfect fantasy life might be kind of boring after awhile. Where's the big challenge to overcome? Makes me think being a pegasus would be too perfect. But really, dreaming of flight your whole life and never being able to do it would be more angst than a challenge to overcome. Sure, you can fly an airplane, but runways, huge turning radius, not actually feeling the air outside blow by and gracefully flow over your wings to generate lift; it's just not quiet the same as the grace or majesty you could fly with with wings.

Pegasus. Pegasus all the way.

Even though magic is sweet, maybe there is a possibility to gain magic power. Then you could have both.

I'd be an Earth pony :) This is because for one, I'm afraid of heights, so pegasus wouldn't fit me all that well. I'm also afraid of falling ._. I wouldn't be a unicorn because I can't really imagine myself being so special to be able to use magic. Good ol' Earth pony for me please! :)

well if i was a pony i would definitely be a unicorn. I'm an artist so it would be kind of difficult to work with all my delicate tools with my mouth or hooves or whatever

i'd probably drool all over the paper or trample my canvases or something gross
