Most other mammals have expressive ears that they can move to show emotion and pick up sound.  I've always wished humans had ears like that.  I mean, it would look really strange if people could suddenly move their ears, but I'm talking about what if humans evolved to have mobile ears like horses.  I love the idea of being able to flatten your ears when angry or upset, or prick them up when happy or excited.  I figure it would be voluntary.  Like, you wouldn't have to move your ears, so if you don't want others to be able to read your emotions you could remain immobile.  But I love the idea of that whole other dimension of expression.  Thoughts?

There are some people who can wiggle their ears, which is an atavism of that.

 

And from what I know of animals, it doesn't seem all that voluntary. We would have about the same amount of control over our ears as we do over our facial expressions and body language. So it would take practice.

Well Preferably I would like wolf like eras, but the concept is the same. The ability to move your ears back and forth and rotate them to pick up noise easier and cancel noise out i.e. wind noise would be really nice. Mine would always be alert and listening...mostly because I like to be aware of my surroundings even when I look like I'm not.

Also we wont evolve any more because to have the need to evolve we would need danger, we would need to become prey. however as we are...the apex predators we never need it.

 

Our ability to develop tools and stuff to survive cancels out any need to change...there are the few who make a change by operations and such, but humans as a race will stay like this for...well Forever or until nature or science says otherwise

Having ears like that would be pretty cool, not to mention useful. However, we don't have ears like that because of nature. I'm not completely sure why but I would say we have immobile ears because our brains are big so our skulls are as well thus it would be hard to fit our ears on top of our head to make them mobile. Other than that, humans mostly rely on sight and with the ability to bring food into our mouths with hands, we don't need to focus sight completely on food while a gazelle (for example) needs ears to detect danger while feeding and focusing on grass or leaves or whatever they eat.

These days though I think more people would opt for a permanent cell-phone implant.

It would be cool, but an animal's hearing is also WAY MORE sensitive than human hearing. Humans already invented devices that hurt the ears of animals, so people would all over the place would be hurting eachothers ears.

 

It would be fun to have droopy or tall and pointed ears that show emotion. Ears beat eyebrows anyday.

I don't think long/pony-like ears would do me much good. I'm so constantly irritated by, well, everything that they'd be lying flat against my skull at all times.

What's curious is that although people don't have long ears and don't use ears for expressing emotions, they nevertheless understand emotions expressed by ponies in the show, intuitively. And the show's creators (animators) also seem to know intuitively how to send the correct message using ponies' ears. Seems like although we don't have expressive ears and couldn't learn how they work during our lives, we still have those programs stored somewhere hardwired in our brains, as an evolutionary heritage.

My hearing is already sensitive so if humans did have ears like an animal's and it did make our hearing more sensitive I would probably have to stay inside and never be around anything that makes noise.
