Coincidence? King Sombra, Nightmare Moon & Discord
dekutree64 replied to PurpleBaconEater's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I've wondered about this a lot too... and hoped for a spinoff series or some movies detailing that time period My main theory is that Celestia and Luna came from somewhere else to Equestria around that time, went on various quests beating up the baddies that had been occupying the land, and in the process of dealing with Discord also had an adventure searching for the elements of harmony (In Return of Harmony, Celestia said they discovered the elements when fighting him). One mystery to be solved is that in the Hearth's Warming Eve story, Celestia and Luna apparently weren't around yet, or at least not ruling (unless perhaps if Princess Platinum was in fact Celestia herself), but the original Equestrian flag is a picture of them. The only thing I can think of is that there was a prophecy of some sort relating to them. Or that it was originally different but they used the modern flag in the play for the sake of the young ponies in the audience to understand what was going on. Or it was just an animator oversight. Here's another thought... what if Celestia and Luna were born normal ponies in the 1000 years ago era (probably unicorns on the sun and moon moving committee, to explain their cutie marks), and discovering the elements of harmony is how they became alicorns? The elements were involved in Twilight's transformation, after all. Only problem is Cadence, because she was a young alicorn recently, and the elements had apparently not been used since the banishing of Nightmare Moon. EDIT: Just discovered that there's a semi-canon explanation of Cadence becoming an alicorn (born pegasus) in the book "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell" (go here if you want more detailed spoiling http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Princess_Cadance#Twilight_Sparkle_and_the_Crystal_Heart_Spell), so apparently the elements aren't the only way... but that does make the theory I described above plausible- 4 replies

About Luna' and Celestia's names...
dekutree64 replied to G1 Derpy FTW's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I think we've just been spelling her name wrong all this time, and it's actually Princess Solestia Here's a thought. We know Lauren Faust originally wanted her to be Queen Celestia. I wonder if the idea for controlling the sun and moon came before the idea to give her a sister? Could be that she was supposed to be the single and ultimate ruler of the land and heavens. Then again, she did have her sun cutie mark in the concept art sketch. And in any case, I definitely prefer the way things are. "Queen" really does sound too evil, and controlling just the sun makes her less scary, and as of Hearth's Warming Eve, we know that she's not even required to do that, since the unicorns did it before. Much more interesting character when she's not all-powerful, IMO. -
A curious thought about Stallions. :o
dekutree64 replied to MyShiningArmor's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I always imagined there was some uber-heartwarming story behind Shining's cutie mark, involving him protecting Twilight from bullies or some such due to her introverted nature Hopefully there'll be an episode about that sometime. And we saw Featherweight get his cutie mark at around the normal age in Ponyville Confidential, so combined with AJ's mention of Big Mac being last in his class, I think it's safe to assume that cutie marks work the same for both genders.- 30 replies

Well, I'd estimate the average age for getting cutie marks is about 12 or 13. So assuming the mane 6 were ~13 (maybe Pinkie was 12? Although Fluttershy was more tall and gangly than the rest, so she could have been 14), and Spike is maybe 9 at the beginning of the series... that makes the adults ~22 at the beginning. Assuming about two years have passed so far, and the CMC are on the later end of average for cutie marks now, that makes the ages at present: Adults, 24 (either 23 for Pinkie, or 25 for Fluttershy) Spike: 11 CMC: 13 That does still leave an 11 year age gap between Applejack/Rarity and Apple Bloom/Sweetie Belle, but the only way to reduce that is by reducing Spike's age, which is already toward the low end for how mature he is.

Agree. The elements as they are, are well chosen and well executed. Nopony's perfect, but they come through when it counts. And there's more to their personalities than just representing their element. And just for fun, how about the elements of war? Twilight- element of strategy Fluttershy- element of intimidation (she wins her battles by staring down and scolding her opponents) Rarity- element of disguise Rainbow Dash- element of attack Applejack- element of honor Pinkie Pie- (really this is the whole point of this post) the element of surprise

FINALLY I GET IT! I always hear bronies rave about the smile song, but for the longest time I just didn't like it that much. The first time I heard it, it seemed a bit shallow, like she just wants everyone to ignore their problems and put on a happy face. But of course she ends up proving that wrong in the episode by solving Cranky's problem to make him happy. And I didn't like the episode itself that much either, since it really could have ended badly if Pinkie didn't have a photographic memory. So I only ever listened to it one more time I think. But this has happened with many other songs in the series as well, where I thought they were just ok at first, but after a few more listenings I can't believe how good they are. I think the residual feels from watching Snowdrop earlier helped too. So... the melody is beautiful in its simplicity, and the instrumentals are lovely as well. Especially the mandolin, which brings to mind MandoPony. And imagining the whole brony community as the friends in the song. The amount of interconnected love and happiness all over the world that this community generates is just off the scale. Then the songs gets to "fill my heart up with sunshine, sunshine", and I'm pretty much melted into a puddle of this Amazing how differently a song can affect you depending on your mindset when listening to it. The comedy bits in the episode are funnier than I remembered as well "This donkey is really really bald!"

Have I ever mentioned how much I love this fandom? That was incredible I hope the official show creators are able to incorporate this into canon without copyright issues... it fits so perfectly. The Windigo winter was of course terrible, so it makes sense that winter would be especially dreaded after that. And I've always wondered how they would explain snow in natural weather regions like the Everfree, if flake-making was done by hoof. But with this, natural snow is just little fluff balls, but ponies can craft it into wish-granting stars. Such a lovely concept. I also love the subtle reference of how Snowdrop wanted the ponies to appreciate all seasons and not shun winter... just like they had been shunning Luna's night. If only there had been another pony with Snowdrop's vision to rectify that as well, before Luna couldn't take it anymore This is the kind of thing I've been wanting for a long time, seeing more of the non-violent moments in Celestia and Luna's past. I do hope the show creators use the flat pink and blue manes for young Celestia and Luna like this if they ever do anything similar. Not only does it help keep clear on what time period you're watching, it makes it more likely that Twilight is immortal now, and just won't get her flowing mane for a few hundred more years. That ending was quite bittersweet. As others have said in this thread, I'd love to see more of Snowdrop's life. How many snowflakes did she make? I wonder if they used to release hundreds to kick off winter every year. But probably after her death, it became tradition to release just one... and maybe they ran out long ago, but Celestia has been saving that original flake for when Luna would return, to remember her old friend.

M6 ponies most & least likely to turn evil
dekutree64 replied to TailsIsNotAlone's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Fluttershy is perhaps most likely to inflict pain for enjoyment, given that she already kind of did in Putting Your Hoof Down, and has snapped and shown a very angry and aggressive side several other times as well. But I don't think she would ever be an effective villain. Twilight definitely has the highest potential for true evil. Physically/magically powerful, socially powerful, smart, young, a bit mentally unstable, and has that certain something that makes other ponies want to follow her command. She could definitely lead an army, and if she thought what she was doing was for the greater good, could get in a lot of trouble without even meaning to. The cider episode is a good example... they could have tried harder to work out a deal with the brothers, to actually make as much cider as the town wanted but without causing money troubles for the Apples. But instead, Twilight organized an army, manipulated them into the competition, and tricked the brothers into defeating themselves. And for the purpose of eliminating business competition so the Apples can continue their old fashioned, inefficient ways and still turn a profit. Not a black-and-white moral at all. As for least likely, I'd have to say Applejack. Her involvement in the cider situation is questionable as well, but it was more personal, and the army wasn't her idea. I can't picture her being a real villain. And most likely to fall in love... Pinkie x Discord. -
MLD doesn't really get to me. Here's another for you called Diary of a Ruler. It isn't even tagged sad, but it's really sad. Detailed introspection of what it's like to be an immortal among mortals, including falling in love with Twilight. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/12191/diary-of-a-ruler And my favorite short-ish non-depressing tearjerker, Friendship is Empathy. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/65160/friendship-is-empathy

Favorite MLP Shipping and Why?
dekutree64 replied to LyraHeartstrings's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
The ages can be pretty confusing... Spike was hatched when the mane 6 got their cutie marks, so the CMC should be a similar age to what they were at that time, meaning that if Spike is older than the CMC, then Rarity and Applejack are more than twice the age of their sisters... which seems a bit unlikely, IMO. Therefore, Spike is quite possibly younger than the CMC, despite being obviously more mature and level-headed. As for pairings, I would say Twilestia and Flutterdash, except that Dash is adorable when paired with any of the mane 6, which includes Twilight, therefore invalidating the whole concept of "one true pairing"... Twilestia because Twilight has been obsessed with Celestia for many years, and her deepest fear shown by Sombra's evil door is to be abandoned by Celestia. And Celestia (in my mind) is very lonely, and from what we've seen, trusts and cares for Twilight more than any other pony, and doesn't really have any more age-appropriate options aside from maybe Discord (or Luna). And Twilight was the one to get Luna back for her, so that's gotta count for something. And now Twilight is quite possibly immortal/long lived as well, so no more having to avoid romance due to short lifespans I have a story idea that sort of softens the age difference too... need to write it up before the show can Joss it And Flutterdash because it's just so adorable, and they have a long history together, and understand eachother on a deep level.- 2,340 replies

I was just watching Ponyville Confidential and had forgotten this gem: Sweetie Belle: How'd you find out!? Rarity: The gilded pages of your betrayal! And some more goodies, Trixie: The Great and Powerful Trixie doesn't trust wheels. Dragon: Maybe he's a pony in a dragon costume (said to 3 ponies in a dragon costume) Pinkie: Come on, would I lie to me? Fluttershy: Do you really all think I'm a silly, gullible fool? Others: *bad poker face* From Spike At Your Service, Rarity (in super sarcastic voice): How ever did you come up with that ingeniously woven, intricate plotline? Rainbow: Just came to me. And best presented in the form of an image,

Most Visually Impressive Moments Of The Show
dekutree64 replied to Stellafera's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Great idea for a thread My favorite for sure is Shining and Cadence's changeling launcher heart spell. And wowsers, that Nightmare Moon hourglass thing... how did I never notice? It even has a subtle sound effect. Very cool. I also love the scenes in Hurricane Fluttershy looking up through the tornado. Beautiful colors, and the pegasi look interesting from that angle, sort of like a school of fish The dismantling of the tornado at the end is pretty cool too. That sort of tornado vortex thing they do in Winter Wrap Up to vacuum away the clouds is another good one. I think that would be quite a lot more effective than just trying to shove everything away. The first sonic rainboom is awesome. I love that above shot of the ring spreading out... and all the other scenes too. And lastly, Sweetie Belle's drawing. Oh the feels Everything about that scene was masterfully done. The look of love in the drawing, the music, Rarity's expression, and the blurry view from her eyes... please excuse me while I follow the instruction manual. -
Tough choice between Twilight and Rarity, but I'll go with Twilight considering that I listen to her songs outside watching the show more often. That high note she does in Winter Wrap Up is awesome, and BBBFF is so emotional, and Love Is In Bloom is the perfect ending to the bestest episode. I love the failure song as well, but more for the instrumentals than the singing. On a related note, I want more Cadence songs.

Who should be the rightful ruler of Equestria
dekutree64 replied to TheMarkz0ne's topic in Forum Lounge
Definitely Celestia. 1000 years of peace is no small feat. She may be a bit manipulative, but at least her plans appear to be for the good of others... maybe also to keep herself in power, but that in itself is a good thing, preventing oppressive rulers from taking her place. -
I have nothing specific planned, but I did have Winter Wrap Up running on loop in my head while cleaning up the yard yesterday Branches and sticks everywhere, from the big snow storms a few weeks ago. It was all nice and spring-like out there yesterday and today... but tomorrow winter's back Probably still too early for planting veggies and herbs.

Does Rainbow Dash deserve her own spin off show
dekutree64 replied to TheMarkz0ne's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Only if each season is a different alternate universe showing how her life would play out if shipped with a different character Season 1 with Fluttershy of course. But she honestly ships adorably with every one of the mane 6, not to mention Spitfire, Soarin, Derpy, Scootaloo... heck, you could even do an episode with Tom and it would be entertaining. But as a general action/adventure type show, I'd say no. She's better off staying with her friends. It would be depressing if she left them to join the Wonderbolts and have adventures that way, and it would just be confusing if it was a totally alternate universe where the others don't exist. -
Lol @ Sombra as Spanish teacher I think they should just call him "Mr. Sombrero" as a nickname. And I strongly protest your choices for Doctor Whooves... he should be the English teacher, named David Tennant... or maybe David Hoover. The Doctor has taken up the role of a teacher more than once before, so it would fit right in And I think Fluttershy shouldn't be part of any clubs... just the shy girl who love animals and is otherwise rather anti-social. I needed characters like that to identify with at that age. Most shows put too much pressure that your self-worth is strictly defined by the number of friends you have.

Yes! Sounds like a great episode. I like most of your role choices... especially Luna as the good witch, rather than Cadence. I think the role would benefit her character more, since Cadence is already the all-purpose good girl. Pinkie could be the door guard. I guess Rainbow can be the horse of a different color I wish Fluttershy wasn't such a shoe-in for the lion. I'd ROFL the day away if she got to be the grumpy apple tree. It would be cool if the Great and Powerful Trixie got to be Oz... but I think Celestia would be best, given how sweet the interactions with Twilight would be. I think the wicked witch should be an existing character. As mentioned above, Chrysalis would work, especially with changelings as flying monkeys. Alternatively, if it really is all just Twilight's dream, it could be Nightmare Moon. That would also eliminate the killing, since she'd just turn back into Luna when doused with water In that case, maybe Chrysalis is the witch of the east (i.e. squished like a bug... get it?)

It's not that they don't get lots of screentime together already... it's just that I want them to get ALL the screentime together But I also voted for Rarity and Rainbow, because Sonic Rainboom was sort of "their episode", and they hardly had any direct interaction in it. But that little scene in Spike At Your Service was awesome, so they definitely need to hang out more... especially if it involves gossip about Applejack's not-so-secret novel. They'd also make an interesting pair for a handcuff scenario. And lastly, Twilight and Rainbow haven't had that much time together. Read It And Weep was their main episode, but again it was less direct interaction, and more just that Twilight is the embodiment of all things book. And now that Twilight has wings, there are even more possibilities for episodes together. They could even talk about books while flying. How awesomely nerdy would that be?

Actually Twilight was already pretty ridiculously strong right at the beginning, harvesting a whole field of apple trees simultaneously (makes me feel sorry for Applejack...), and the ursa incident. I'd almost say her power has gone down since moving to Ponyville. Perhaps due to lack of a certain princess always being around setting an example. And indeed, there's no evidence that being an alicorn will give her a power boost by itself... Cadence can do that big shield thing, but then again so can Shining, and he doesn't have wings. I do think there should be more progression of everypony's dreams/careers though. Rainbow joining the Wonderbolts, Rarity opening a boutique in Canterlot and becoming famous (but only if the whole group moves to Canterlot), etc.. More social advancement than physical. Rainbow is already the fastest in the world... it's kind of odd that she hasn't been invited to join the 'bolts already. But as with Twilight, it needs to happen mid-series to ensure that the group stays together, and that we get to see what new challenges come with the new circumstances. Much cooler than just ending it at a big change, which often gives the impression that their lives aren't interesting enough to tell the story of after their long-time dream is accomplished.

I think no. As cool as it would be at the time, it does run too much risk of Dragonball syndrome, with the characters getting exponentially stronger than anything has ever been before. The single rainboom was already legendary, so I think better to leave it a done deal. I'd rather see Dash training for some physically and technically difficult stunt combos and stuff, more like an olympic athlete. ...why hadn't I ever thought of that before? There should definitely be an episode next season of the Equestria Games actually happening, with Dash as a competitor. She was so excited about it already

Which pet would you adopt from Fluttershy?

I think Faust originally intended them to be long lived, but not immortal... there was something in an interview posted recently about Twilight being Celestia's successor, which I assume means Celestia was to be near the end of her life. But the new writers seem to have changed it so Twilight is just an addition to the family, and they'll live happily ever after... which I vastly prefer. That doesn't necessarily say Celestia won't eventually die of old age though. After all, dragons are an in-world example of extremely long lived creatures, which still follow a normal lifecycle as far as we've seen. In any case, I think it's safe to assume Luna is just as immortal/long lived as Celestia, regardless of whether her banishment acted as a stasis or continued to age during it. Now that I think about it, maybe Faust was a TwiLuna shipper... banishment acts as stasis, Celestia passes her power to Twilight and dies, Twilight and Luna have 1000 years together. I'm not sure about Cadence and Twilight's aging, and I doubt the topic will ever be covered in the show due to the implications for either Celestia/Luna/Spike, or the rest of the mane 6, depending on which way you go. And maybe it's better that way... I can live in my bittersweet immortal Twilestia world, and others can live in their depressing dead mane 6 world
