How did you view my little pony prior to FIM?

Older sister used to piss me off with her toy G3 cheerilee, which i 'accidentally' destroyed when i was 6. I hated it. when fim exploded onto the internet i basically went 'it's My Little Pony, i hate My Little Pony, i must therefore hate this and anyone who likes it.' I was a dickhead. I didn't watch fim until 2013 and find out how wrong i was.

I thought about it as much as I thought about Barbie and Bratz. In other words, I could care less about it as it was just another little girl thing in my eyes.

...And mother of god, look at me now. Me four years ago would be disappointed.

I can vaguely remember seeing some of gen1 on tv as a kid but I mostly remember watching gen2.  As a little kid I thought it was OK but nothing to get excited about. I didn't even know gen3 existed until after I started watching gen4.

My general opinion of MLP pre gen4 was that it was just another stupified, pink, girly cartoon that only little girls could ever like. Even the new name "Friendship is Magic" I found very cringeworthy and so avoided it like the plague for a long time.

Too be honest, I never really gave it much thought, it was just a thing that existed in all honesty. No not because I had Action Men or whatever, I didn't even like action figures they bored the stuffing out of me because of their limitations, the only toy I needed growing up was my PC and Sega Mega Drive (Genesis for you yanks.)

It's true that FiM don't look much like ponies, but I don't know that I'd say that any of the generations ever did. They've all been very cartoony.

In terms of the facial shape though, previous generations were more horse-like. G4 heads are practically round (except the stallions).

I really did not know about it much. I had seen some piece of some episodes but never really watched it. I did not even know about the brony community. I started watching after I saw that MLP had a villain. It was in a youtube video where I saw Nightmaremoon and I was like "It has a villain, well, I might try it" and started watching it. Then I discovered this wonderful community  :)

Actually not as sour as one might think. I didn't think much of the franchise but I remember watching two of the MLP movies from the eighties when I was little and was fond of them.

As I grew up, the toy commercials were the only thing I recall of the whole thing.

. . . . Wow, it really is quite surreal to think of those toy commercials only a few years ago.

I tried to watch a few episodes and did find it appealing, but I took it no further due to my situation at home, by the time I felt it would be safe to watch, the season was over, though I did... er... Join the Furry fandom... for a while... 1989-2000, but left due to the fandoms bad rep...

Prior to FiM, I remember it as something that I never really thought about.  Ever.

That being said, I had very little exposure to FiM content prior to looking into it myself.

I only ever saw a few episodes of My Little Pony Tales (The cheating one, the one where a song about secrets is sang, the one where Teddy is revealed to like Teddies and play with dolls etc, and the one where Teddy is a jerk and one mare sings "You don't know him like I do" and then he saves some people or something. All four of these eps were given away for free, along with other awful girly crap on a free DVD given away on some crappy Girl's Magazine my little sister had a subscription to) and the old My Little Pony Movie with The Smooze, so...

As a kid who watched NCIS and Dexter, my opinion of it was "Bland, lame crap".

Before I heard of FiM, I never really knew that My Little Pony existed, besides the ads that played on TV when I was younger.

Even then, I thought that the toys would only appeal to very young girls. Probably why I barely remembered it existed.

I honestly knew nothing about MLP when I became a brony. Sure, I'd seen a commercial here or there, but I never gave it much thought. (Though, I did think the baby ponies were cute.) So, I was quite surprised to learn that FIM was the fourth generation.

Back in the late 80s, early 90s My Little Pony & Friends was on local TV here in Phoenix.  I was on the night shift so I would watch it to unwind after getting off work.  It went off the air & I pretty much forgot about it until MLP FIM.

I was largely indifferent to it, but I also slightly thought of it as something only little girls would get any amusement out of.

Thank LUNA I was wrong!

Honestly, I never payed much attention to it before G4, although it it the sort of cutsey type of thing I would enjoy so I actully am surprised I wasn't into MLP before G4. G4 will always be my favorite Gen, but I do appreciate and respect previous gens for their own merits.

The G3 toy ads were the extent of what I thought MLP was, so when someone said they like MLP, I thought they were a little odd. Though I didn't watch the G3 series till this past year, I think that series is almost exactly what I would have imagined MLP is like prior to my exposure to FiM, and I guess that is what MLP was like prior to FiM so I can't say I was really wrong. I just didn't know that there was such a thing as a MLP series a guy like myself could enjoy.
