It's about  loss of control, screaming and hollering, and most importantly.. passion.

Personally I enjoy watching sports, i don't enjoy playing them. For some people they find sport sboring or unamusing due to the fact that most times it seems like a bunch of people wanting to do nothing but win. This is true, but at the same time from a personal perspective i think that there's something about watching a whole city (2011 World Series, STL cardinals) come on their teams back as the underdog and supporting them the whole way. I find that a very interesting story, and one that you rarely see when it brings people together. Alot of the same things can be said about other interests and hobbies.

Personally, I'd rather play a sport than watch it most of the time.  Mostly because sports that aren't pointless are fun to play.  NCAA football and basketball are great to watch if you are in the stands, because of the atmosphere.  Aussie rules football is really the only sport I can watch on TV and not instantly fall asleep because it is like soccer played with a football by rugby players who hockey fight all the time.  Calvinball with actual rules that the officials ignore half the time.  Its awesome.

I know what you mean; I dislike watching sports. My dad is a big hockey fan, so whenever he's home in the evenings he watches it on TV. I tried watching it with him before, but it got so boring after awhile. If I was the athletic type, I would actually play the sport rather than watching other people play it.

I personally see no real point to watching sports and I also feel the 'hype' around them is kinda pointless too. Sure it can be exciting and all but a lot of athletes are treated like gods nowadays. However, I still find myself maybe watching a game of whatever if I happen to be doing something else, I may have it on in the background. I suppose it is the wonder of the outcome for me. That's an odd aspect of me.

I suppose I can see the appeal of watching it, but I definitely don't see the hype or the celebrity worship aspects of it.

I can't stand to watch sports, they bore me to death, cars driving around in a circle hundreds of times, guys running back and forth over and over, i don't see what people see in it, when i was in tech school they even closed school early to let everyone watch the game, i don't get it, it is really boring. and when people try to talk stats with me my eyes glaze over and i pray for death LOL

I don't like watching sports, I don't like playing sports, however I do understand that it's another hobby people get pretty passionate about.

I understand the sentiment, I think people can waste too much money and time following teams or players, sometimes it's a bandwagon thing, or hoarding obsession, both of whom can be detrimental if taken to the extreme. I play sports, such as mixed martial arts, archery and mountain biking, I rather be doing sports than watch it, or immerse into the culture of sports fans, which can and does resemble a cult, especially if you have to surrender you individuality and sense, to the good of the group. Overall, modern sports is similar to bread and circuses of ancient Rome, it went from recreation to a lifestyle, as the Romans were more prone to watching sports than participating in it, thus became a culture of Colosseum participants, a mere member of the mob, I think people would not be so obsessed by sport, if they play sports to begin with.

I don't like how it's ABSOLUTELY FUCKING EVERYWHERE and there's no escape from it no matter what you do. Turn on the TV - sports. Radio? Sports. Internet? Sports.

I can understand the appeal, but I'd rather it wasn't treated as it is.Espeically soccer. THe money in soccer is appaling - espeically when all that happens is a team scores two goals. Fucking WOW. 50,000 dollars a week to score maybe 2 goals a week.

Yes, I see no appeal. I don't play or follow sports. I can see the fun in playing sports, but not competitively. A few times I've played volleyball or soccer with friends in the park, but I don't like keeping score. When people start keeping score and getting serious, I stop having fun. That's because I'm not good and I just want some exercise.

But I see no point in following sports. It's just people you don't know playing a sport and making money. Why do you feel allegiance to total strangers just because they happen to be wearing a certain color uniform? My friend loves football and will yell at the TV. I told him that the guys on TV couldn't hear him.

This is my new signature.

I can understand why people would like to watch sports- having something to talk about with friends, the thrill of seeing your favourite team score, fascination with a sport they may also do IRL- but, it amazes me how obsessed some viewers can be.  :wau: Even if the outcome can be unpredictable, it looks to me like it'd get boring sooner or later, so those people that can watch football or whatever every time there's a match on must be seeing something I'm not here. I don't know the people who are playing, and I feel no real attachment to them or any of the players in them. Who wins and loses makes no difference to me, and what's considered impressive in sports often doesn't really impact on me or get me hyped for the outcome. =/ Though sports where there are fewer players at a time (tennis, for instance), I could possibly get used to and actually grow fond of certain players, maybe. :)

I can understand both sides, but I'm not much of a sports person.  I loathe watching any sport the includes a ball or puck.  I do love watching figure skating, gymnastics, and swimming, though, but it has to be something pretty special for me to get interested.  I'll watch the Olympics, but the rest of the time, I don't bother.  I love to swim, and I'm a figure skater myself.  I used to be obsessed with watching anything skating related, but I kind of got jaded on it, for a variety of reasons.  I'd rather just skate myself than watch it, unless it's one of my very favorite skaters.  Also, for me to be interested in a sport, either doing or watching, there has to sex appeal.  Call that shallow if want.  I don't think it is.  I think it's life-enriching.

I know, right? Baseball is my least favorite. Every single time I have to watch it I think this: "And it's a triple!!" "Congratu-bucking-lations you hit a ball with a stick. *facepalm*"

Until recently, I never found much appeal in it either.

I'd watch them as group events (World Cup finals at a family reunion, keep my Dad's company, etc), but never on my own. Even when I played lots of sports, I never cared to watch them.

As with many things though, my interest took off thanks to anime xD

After watching Kuroko no Basuke (a basketball anime), I bought a ball and started playing again. My perspective on the game really grew, and I developed a new appreciation for what it takes. Whenever my roommate has a (basketball) game on now, I get engrossed pretty quickly ^_^

Me and my friend were watching youtube when his dad walks in and says "What's the point in watching someone else play the game when you can play the game youself" both of us replied with the word "sports"

I see the appeal of sports and it's clear why they watch it, there will always be that something different to if they played it themselves. Just like if you watch a YouTube gaming video you'll be seeing things you might never experience yourself in the same game

I can see the appeal, as someone who watches league of legends matches. Dont care much for 'traditional' sports, but I can understand why they're popular.

I've watched sports before, I honestly don't get how they're exciting. Even as a Canadian, I find hockey rather boring. I don't follow any sports. They just don't appeal to me. I find motorsports more interesting, specifically off road stuff, such as the DAKAR rally.

Eh, I think I can get the root of the appeal.  :)

Not sure if I can fully sympathize with a lot of people who support specific teams and somewhat identify as part of the team ("Yay, we won again!" kind of stuff) but it honestly can be pretty interesting. For example; american football. I could probably play football if I knew the guidelines a little better, but perhaps at a 5th grade level, or against friends who understand I have no idea how to play.   I have only extreme respect for those who have worked the dedication to bring their body to such a physical peak, I don't mind sitting around and watching feats of the human body. I think it's a lot more appealing in person, but most anything is.

I can understand some of the team support or the stat sharing as well. It seems to be in a similar vein as some video games...you discussion strategy or which Pokemon are best for which fight or whatever I haven't touched Pokemon in years -- but instead of the stats of the Pokemon, it's people! On top of making it into a social event where you get all your friends/family together to watch humans run fast and jump high and slam into each other a little...I think sports are pretty alright to spectate!
