  1. Besides the Gulf of Mexico, the closest class 1 sky for me would be Big Bend National Park in Texas. I'd like to go there once I settle in at my new place.

5 or 6. Not bright like major cities, but it was a lot more impressive 15-20 years ago when it was a really small community, but now my town's been developing at an alarming rate and as a result the night sky is no where near as cool as it was back then

Much brighter than that and the Milky Way will fade into the skyglow.  :(

Can you see the andromedas or triangulum galaxies :P ?

Yep. Andromeda galaxy is very easy to see directly. I can also see the Triangulum galaxy here, but it needs to be at a fairly high altitude.

The humidity often limits what you can see here in the southeast. Right now, sky transparency is horrible with a mucky haze below 20°. Fall and winter skies are much better.

  3. Ah, this topic certainly has my attention.  :kirin:

One thing to keep in mind when using the Dark Site Finder LP map is the satellite data and computations are from 2006. A lot has changed since then. I recommend this map which uses satellite data from 2014 or so.

With that said, my skies rate at Class 3 Rural Sky (Blue Zone on both maps). Zenith usually measures 21.6 mpsas with my sky quality meter. Clouds at night are as dark as charcoal briquettes, except along the southeast horizon. There's a low light dome about 12.5 degrees above the SE horizon. My meter measures 21.0 when pointed towards it. I can see the dark lane structure and bulge in the Summer Milky Way. Winter Milky Way is also easy to observe. Zodiacal light is quite bright, especially in the fall.

Put simply, the night sky here is beautiful and full of stars. I don't know how you city folk can tolerate all those street lights and that orange skyglow. :P

  4. I go to my rural property. One of the creeks on the property has a small waterfall that's relaxing to listen to. The night sky there is very dark so I enjoy stargazing. Really helps me unwind.

Can't wait to call the place my home soon  :fluttershy:

Well I got my internet connection way back in the year 1999. I remember having an US robotics 56 modem. My dialup connection was a whooping 20-30kb/s. Since the summer of 2004 I have a broadband connection. Going from dialup to broadband was incredible.

Same year for me! Had dial up tho I remember the speeds being around 8-9kb/s. Our landline service was terrible. Didn't get faster internet til around 2006 with an AT&T 2G card and even that sucked.

Now I’m on satellite waiting for my power company to bring that fiber optic out here like they say they are.

    Lucky!  :sassy:

  7. I kinda miss being a kid, at least my later teen years. I could do physical work all day and still feel invincible. Fast forward to 30 and my damn back, wrists, shoulders, and right ankle ache after doing such work. I'm gonna need a rebuild kit before I hit 50!  :Cozy:

Ok, I'm done ranting. Makes me sound old and grouchy  :adorkable:

Nah, voting is pointless. Your one vote never seems to have much of an effect anyway

Yeah but it's kinda fun to write in Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints quarterback) for all of the local elections. Recently started writing in MLP characters.  :BrightMacContent:

I do not have any video game consoles, but I have a lot of other electronics. And yes, electrolytic caps and paper caps (in vacuum tube devices) need to be replaced most of the time. Especially if the device was made in the 80s or 90s in USSR (or ex-USSR) - they had some caps that were pretty much guaranteed to fail.

Vacuum tube radios are my favorite to repair. I usually keep a few spare tubes on hand and a small stash of common capacitors and resistors. A lot of those old radios have carbon resistors that will go open over time from the heat. I pretty much have all the test equipment needed, except for a signal generator. I'm looking to get one because I will eventually run across a radio that will need to be realigned.

I have no idea why I keep the old caps from radios I've repaired^_^

Also, quite a difficult accent to pull off, unless it is your native tongue.... (Is it your native tongue? :o)

That's my natural voice. I'm college educated, yet I sound like a redneck

Folks from up north or overseas usually notice my heavy southern accent during teleconferences and meetings at work.  ^_^

  11. I'm pretty good at troubleshooting electronics and replacing bad components on circuit boards, except the tiny surface mount stuff. A few years ago, I had to replace the electrolytic capacitors on my model 1 Sega CD. It would power on, but only the sound effects could be heard. The CD audio was dead. Bad leaky caps on the audio board were the culprit. I replaced them with new ones, and that restored the sound. The repair was actually pretty easy.

I've also replaced the game save batteries in my SNES games. There's even a way to replace it without losing your save files. Just use an extra battery with wire leads and solder them to the correct traces on the board to maintain power. Replace the old one and remove the extra battery when finished. :)

A lot of vintage gaming consoles are still in use and still have the original capacitors and such. As they age, these components will fail and have to be replaced. So, anypony else on here maintain and repair their own video game consoles? If so, what repairs have you had to perform?
