I have been to online forums, I have been to IRC chat rooms, I have been a moderator and administrators at 3 huge forums back in the day, but close to someone? That's so difficult to answer. If being a friend to someone online is being close, then yes!
Is meeting someone IRL is considered close, then yes.
Is traveling to meet someone considered close..... yes. I guess a yes is the answer then.

Years ago. Back in middle school I was on the Warrior Cats Forums a bunch (waaay back on the original site, with the hideous blue and green theme), and there were quite a few people I became close to. I don't really know if you could call it "dating" at that age, but there was a girl on there I talked to a lot. She mysteriously disappeared one day though, and nobody knows what happened to her.

There was another friend I met pretty soon before the official WCF died and were re-made by the community, and we talked off and on for a while. The last time I talked to her was junior year of high school if I remember right. I wouldn't say we ever dated, but we were close at one point. She was always trying to invite me to group chats with her other online friends, and they did not like me at all. Or only one of them didn't, I'm still not sure. All I know is at least one of them didn't want me there, and nobody else really seemed to care about it.

Nowadays, I don't really try to get close to anyone. I just kind of stick to myself. I wouldn't say I'm happy this way, but I'm content, if nothing else.

Thats actually my story as well. Met someone on here(oddly enough) who pretended to care about me but then stepped out on me, used me for my connections to horse famous people, and would never listen to my issues yet always dumped their issues on me.

I met this person through Discord. I had helped them with their issues and was there for them, only for them to just cast me aside like I was nothing. I won't make the same mistake again.

Well this thread got gloomy fast!

There is always a risk that you will meet someone, especially online, that takes advantage of you. That is not really what this topic is about. I still say you should always be prepared, and still give people a chance. It is not the end of the world unless you make it to be.

I have only met nice people here. I was expecting one or two baddies, but the mods and admins keep a really good eye out for troublemakers and I do keep seeing bans here and there without having to involve myself.
